(CBS) SACRAMENTO After more than three decades, the Sacramento County Sheriff's department says they've finally solved the brutal murder of a 12-year-old girl.
The Sacramento County Sheriff's department announced the arrest of James Gains in the death of 12-year-old Shannon Ritter.
According to the sheriff, Shannon Ritter's body was found on September 30, 1972. Shannon was last seen the night before when she was babysitting at a Rancho Cordova
apartment complex. She had been strangled and drowned.
The sheriff's department investigated the murder at the time, but was unable to find a suspect. Then, earlier this year, Detectives Angela Kirby and Jim Barnes re-opened the Ritter case.
As a result of their investigation, they were able to present new evidence to the Crime Lab for analysis. That evidence led them to Gains. In 1972, Gains lived in the same apartment complex as Shannon Ritter. Last Friday, Gains was arrested in Florida. He was returned to Sacramento today and was booked for the murder of Shannon Ritter.
Gains is scheduled to be arraigned next Monday, August 14th.
