Toledo man indicted in fatal shootings of 2

A Toledo man was indicted yesterday by a Lucas County grand jury for the fatal shootings last month of Tammy Cappelletty and Juan E. Ybarra in the city's north end.

Latrel Brown, 25, of 915 East Bancroft St., was indicted on two counts of aggravated murder and one count of aggravated robbery. He was being held in the county jail in lieu of a $1 million bond.

Ms. Cappelletty, 30, and Mr. Ybarra, 24, both of Toledo, were shot in the head Sept. 19 in a car at Locust and Baker streets. They later died at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center.

The indictment includes specifications that a gun was used in the homicides and that Brown is a repeat violent offender.

Latest killing may be tied to other deaths; violent streak across Toledo claims 9 victims in 9 days

The murder of a woman found shot in the head yesterday may be connected to the weekend double homicide of two men who met a similar fate and were linked to a federal probe into a multimillion-dollar cocaine ring, Toledo police said.

'It all comes back to Operation Tailgate, police Chief Mike Navarre said, referring to an investigation into a major Toledo drug ring that was broken up less than two weeks ago.

No one has been arrested or charged in the three slayings, the latest in a series of nine murders in nine days in Toledo.

or two counts of murder in the shooting deaths Sept. 19 of Tammy Cappelletty, 30, and Juan Ybarra, 24, both of Toledo. They were found shot in the head in a car at Baker and Locust streets and died at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center.

Their murders were most likely a 'drug deal gone awry, Mayor Carty Finkbeiner said yesterday during a news conference.

Chief Navarre, standing at his side, wouldn"t provide details, but said later that the deal involved a 'very substantial amount of drugs.

Police believe the Sept. 20 death of pedestrian Calvin Johnson, 23, in East Toledo also is drug-related, but do not think it is connected to the other slayings.

He died near Butler and Earl streets in front of the Weiler Homes after he was caught in a collision between a pickup and a sport utility vehicle.

Brown pleads to aggravated robbery

One of two Toledo men accused in the drug-related slayings of Tammy Cappelletty and Juan E. Ybarra entered into a plea agreement yesterday in Lucas County Common Pleas Court.

Latrel Brown, 25, of 709 Spring St., pleaded no contest to aggravated robbery and a specification that a gun was used in the crime. He was found guilty by Judge James Jensen.

In return for the plea, Brown told Judge Jensen that he has agreed to testify at the trial next month of his co-defendant, Tyrone Johnson, 28.

Brown and Johnson were indicted on charges of aggravated murder and aggravated robbery in the homicides of Ms. Cappelletty, 30, of South Toledo, and Mr. Ybarra, 24, of East Toledo.

Both were found shot in the head in a car at Baker and Locust streets in North Toledo Sept. 19.

While Ms. Cappelletty was driving, Johnson, who was in the backseat with Brown, took the cocaine from Mr. Ybarra, and then winked at Brown as a signal that he was going to steal the drugs, Mr. Lastra said.

Mr. Lastra said Johnson pulled a handgun from between his knees and then shot each of the victims in the head.

The defendants fled from the car, according to authorities. Brown ran to his nearby home, where he changed his clothes.

He returned to the area of the shooting and engaged in conversation with officers who were called to investigate the shooting in an attempt to remove himself as a suspect in the crime, Mr. Lastra said.
