Rabbi admits to Pedophilia in Australia
Mon Apr 15, 2013 12:40PM GMT

David Kramer, once stood before a classroom full of students at the Jewish orthodox Yeshiva College in St Kilda, a suburb of Melbourne in Victoria.

Now, appearing before a courtroom at the Melbourne Magistrates Court, the 52 year-old Rabbi pleaded guilty to six charges of indecent assault for the sexual abuse of students.

The court heard that Kramer taught at the college in the nineties and fled to the United States after rumours surfaced that he was sexually assaulting students.

While in the States, Kramer was charged with assaulting a 12 year-old boy and sentenced to seven years imprisonment.

He was extradited last year to face Australian charges.

This incident, an Australian first, has advocates, support groups and national bodies, such as Adults Surviving Child Abuse, hoping that it will encourage other victims to step forward.

Dr. Kezelmen hopes that the Kramer case will have a domino effect on others who have the responsibility of caring for children and that the Australian Royal Commission investigation into responses to institutional child sexual abuse cases will finally discover the truth behind what has been occurring in various institutions.

Such needs will hopefully shape a system in which adequate policies and monitoring systems will assure the safety of children.

These recommendations will hopefully be formed by the Australian Royal Commission. The six-member, three-year investigation, had its first hearing at the start of April in the hope that the estimated thousands who have been subjected to such trauma will be heard.

In a statement made to Australian media, Founder and President of the Capital Jewish Forum and child sex abuse survivor, Manny Waks, described the event as an important milestone for the victims and a watershed for the Australian Jewish community. Wether this will motivate other victims to come forward, however, is yet to be seen.
