FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WSVN) -- A 15-year-old South Florida teen is in critical condition after he was shot by Broward County Police.
Police shot Duwan Crooms, who does not have a driver's license, after he led them on a high-speed chase on Interstate 95 and Cypress Creek Road Friday night. Officers also tasered Croom's 16-year-old passenger, and made him do the funky chicken.
Broward Sheriff's Officers say they pursued the car because they believed it was one of two cars that someone had stolen at gunpoint from Easy Go Auto Sales in Fort Lauderdale.
However, after the chase ended, the Broward Sheriff's Office admits they arrested the wrong suspects. "The vehicle that we had w
as unrelated," said Frank Sousa of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department.
Sousa says that the teen's car, a cream-colored Pontiac, matched the description of one of the stolen cars. "These two vehicles were exactly alike in appearance," said Sousa. "The officers had every single reason to believe, especially when they went to stop this vehicle and this vehicle fled."
The chase ended when Crooms's car struck a civilian vehicle causing it to spin out of control.
Police say that though Crooms was not connected to the robbery, he struggled with police when they apprehended him. "Both occupants of the vehicle put up a fight," said Sousa. "It ended up being a violent struggle to get these two into custody. During the process of this violent struggle, a round went off striking the driver of the vehicle in the upper shoulder area."
BSO eventually found the stolen vehicle and are now investigating the connection of two other men to the robbery.
