POLITICS LIVE: The ANC is splitting before our eyes. Soon, it's not going to be pretty (Sorry, but I missed that 'pretty period')

The ANC is splitting before our eyes. Soon, it's not going to be pretty

This weekend it was deputy president, Cyril Ramaphosa. This morning it was health minister, Aaron Motsoeledi. This afternoon it was trade and industry minister, Rob Davies. They have joined tourism minsiter, Derek Hanekom and Gauteng Premier, David Makhura, in publicly backing finance minister, Pravin Gordhan against the attempt to charge him with 'fraud'.

On the other side of the fence, the ANC's North West region has joined the party's Ethekwini region and its youth and women's leagues in describing Gordhan as "possibly working with the opposition" to "weaken the ANC" according to a story on BusinessLIVE.

And so the battle lines are slowly being drawn. Thuli Madonsela on this side, Des van Rooyen on the other.

The position of the pro-Zuma camp is becoming more and more intemporate, with the youth leader, Collen Maine, calling on veterans to 'fetch their AKs' to defend Zuma in some imagined final battle on the streets.

The adults in the party are still maintaining the thinnest film of decency. This is how the North West ANC put it:

"It is our view that Cde Pravin Gordhan must subject himself to the rule of law as everyone is expected to, and not behave in a manner that casts aspersions on law enforcement agencies and other state organs. We believe that as a sitting public office bearer who took an oath of office, Cde Gordhan understands that he remains innocent until proven otherwise and should cooperate with law enforcement agencies."

But the phony war is over and the real battle has begun for the soul of the party. As the sides engage expect the language to become harder and the compromises harder to find.
