Before the first bell rings at 8 a.m. at Carl Hayden High School, Phoenix police Officer Marco Vasquez cruises around the neighborhood dotted with single-story homes with chain-link fences.
The streets are empty except for walking students who smile and wave at him.
Vasquez was assigned to the large west Phoenix school in December, and, like a new student among the 2,500, he was nervous.
"I was overwhelmed with things I would have to do," Vasquez says. "Would I be involved in gang fights? Paperwork?"
