Man Killed, At Least 7 Others Shot, During Violent Friday Night In Philadelphia
By CBS3 Staff
July 16, 2021 at 11:02 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — It’s been a violent start to the weekend in Philadelphia. Police say one man is dead and seven others, including a 14-year-old girl, were shot in two separate shootings Friday night.

One man was killed and four others, including a 14-year-old girl, were injured in shooting in Southwest Philadelphia. It happened on the 2700 block of Ruby Terrace around 8:30 p.m.

Police say a man in his late 20s or early 30s was shot multiple times and was later pronounced dead.

Police say the teenage girl suffered a graze wound to the abdomen and is in stable condition.

A 29-year-old man was shot twice in the chest and twice in the abdomen and is listed in critical but stable condition.

Two others — a 38-year-old man, a 33-year-old man — are in stable condition after being shot.

No arrests have been made.

A 40-year-old woman is fighting for her life after being shot in a triple shooting in Philadelphia’s Kensington section. Police said it happened shortly after 7:30 p.m. Friday on the 600 block of East Ontario Street.

Police said the woman was shot three times in her chest and once in her left leg. She was rushed to Temple University Hospital and placed in critical condition.

Investigators said a 54-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man were also shot in the incident. Both were taken to the hospital and placed in stable condition.

No arrests have been made at this time, according to police.

This comes after the city surpassed 300 homicides in 2021. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle "Bug Eyes" Outlaw also released a statement Friday on the city’s homicides.

“Early this morning, the city surpassed 300 homicides. The brazenness with which these assaults are carried out is appalling” said Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw. The lack of regard for human life is affecting innocent bystanders and our children are being caught in the crossfire.”

“The Philadelphia Police Department remains committed to ensuring the safety of all residents and visitors of Philadelphia. So far this year, we have taken almost as many guns off of the streets than we did in all of 2020. Our officers remain laser-focused on enforcing the law while deterring crime, and as I have spoken about previously, we continue to partner with local, state, and federal law enforcement to improve our operations and have access to technology that can help the PPD curb violence more effectively.”

“Again, I cannot understate the importance of the police and the community coming together and acting as partners. Social problems require a unified response. It is through collaboration that we will be able to effect long-term and sustainable change.”

Series Of Sunday Shootings Bookends Another Violent Weekend In Philadelphia That Sees More Than 30 Victims
By CBS3 Staff
July 18, 2021 at 7:55 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — It’s been another violent weekend in Philadelphia with more than 30 shooting victims, including nine after 2:30 p.m. Sunday. This comes after the city surpassed 300 homicides Friday.

A series of shootings on Sunday has left nine people injured, including three teenagers.

On the 1600 block of West Seltzer Street in North Philadelphia around 5:30 p.m., police said a 34-year-old man was shot several times throughout his body. He was taken to Temple University Hospital and placed in critical condition, according to police. There have been no arrests.

A 33-year-old man is in stable condition at the hospital after police said he was shot once in the lower back in the 500 block of West Roosevelt Boulevard just after 5:30 p.m. No arrests have been made.

In Southwest Philadelphia’s Kingsessing section, a 15-year-old boy was shot once in each leg in a triple shooting shortly after 2:45 p.m. on the 5500 block of Malcolm Street. A 29-year-old man was also injured in the shooting after he was shot in the leg and a 19-year-old man suffered a graze wound to his left knee, according to police. There are no arrests and no weapons have been recovered.

Another teen was shot in a double shooting on the 200 block of Montana Street in East Mount Airy shortly before 5 p.m. The teen was shot once in his left thigh and a 23-year-old man was shot in his left wrist. Two men — a 49-year-old man and a 25-year-old man — were injured in a double shooting shortly after 3:30 p.m. on the 400 block of East Ashman Street. Both were stabilized at the hospital, authorities said. No arrests have been made in this shooting either.

Philadelphia Police Deputy Commissioner Joel Dale pleaded Saturday night after a double shooting in West Philly left a 1-year-old baby injured for “everyone to step up to the plate and carry out their part” in curbing the gun violence.

“This goes to show that there are a lot of guns on the street, and you have folks who are not afraid to use these guns and they don’t care who’s around when they use these guns,” Philadelphia Police Deputy Commissioner Joel Dales said. “It’s a big problem. This is not OK. This is not OK at all.”

Philadelphia surpassed 300 homicides in 2021 earlier this week. The city is on pace to see a record number of homicides.

Eyewitness News caught up with Mayor Jim Kenney on Thursday to ask about the city’s grim milestone.

“I understand that. You want to concentrate on numbers, these are all lives. They’re all human beings. And every city in the country is going through this — Chicago, New York, Baltimore,” Kenney said.

In a statement released Friday, Mayor Kenney added, “While this is an appalling national trend because of the lack of commonsense federal gun laws  (never the niggers), the local violence we’re experiencing is tearing families and communities apart here at home, and inflicting trauma on Philadelphians of all ages.”

By CBS3 Staff
August 17, 2021 at 10:48 am

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A shooting outside a ShopRite grocery store in Philadelphia’s Olney neighborhood claimed the life of an 18-year-old high school student during a violent night across the city. Eyewitness News has confirmed the teen killed was an 11th-grade student at Samuel Fels High School in the Crescentville section of the city.

We found 16 spent shell casings some were in front of the BMW, many of the spent shell casings are on the driver’s side,” Philadelphia Police Inspector Scott Small said.

Police describe the fatal incident as an ambush-style shooting in the parking lot of a grocery store in Olney.

“We are being told by witnesses that there are possibly three shooters,” Small said. “Three males that walked up to this vehicle and appeared to be intentionally firing right into front and driver’s side of this vehicle.”

The shooting happened at about 7 p.m. Monday. Relatives of the victims showed up on the scene emotionally as their loved one is now one of the nearly 340 people killed in the city so far this year.

“What happens very often when we have crime scenes such as this,” Small said. “Family members hear it over social media, they get phone calls on their cellphones, and not only do they go to the hospital, but they come to the crime scene, because they wanna help out, they wanna find out what’s happening.”

A 19-year-old woman was also shot three times.

The victims were rushed to Einstein Hospital and the 18-year-old man was pronounced dead.

The woman underwent surgery and is in critical condition.

This is one of three shootings last night with at least six victims.

They say it’s possible there was a shootout.

Violent Crime In Philadelphia Leveling Off, Arrests On Rise, City Leaders Say

By Howard MonroeSeptember 15, 2021 at 4:11 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — City leaders say violent crime in Philadelphia is leveling off despite some high-profile homicides. Some of those notable cases have resulted in arrests, which authorities say are on the rise.
The Wednesday update on anti-violence efforts came as the city’s number of homicides sits at 374, a 17% increase from this time in 2020. That number doesn’t include the death of a 15-year-old who was fatally shot in North Philadelphia Monday.
Officials said arrests are up for those using illegal guns, called “ghost guns.”
These are all signs of progress, they said, but Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said crimes can’t go unpunished – especially those against children.
“These are kids with their entire lives in front of them,” she said, adding, “And our children shouldn’t be experiencing the continued and sustained trauma.”
The city said their newly-formed citizen oversight commission can help improve struggling relations between the community and their police force.
Councilman Curtis Jones is a fierce advocate for the commission, saying in part, “What’s important is that this commissioner be viewed as fair to all citizens in Philly and that the process be understandable and transparent.”
The nine-person board will oversee the more than 6,000 uniformed officers in Philadelphia. The members must be residents and be five years removed from any law enforcement or FOP membership.
Mayor Jim Kenney believes the citizen-run commission will have a positive impact on law enforcement policies.
“CPOC will work to improve police conducts, enhance the quality of internal investigations, increase communications and engagement between community and departments.”

Facility Issues Close Yet Another Philadelphia Rec Center Amid Rising Gun Violence Problem

By Alicia RobertsSeptember 22, 2021 at 11:08 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — As gun violence continues to plague Philadelphia, another recreation center – which some consider an oasis for young people during these dangerous times – is shutting down.
Cobbs Creek Rec Center is temporarily shutting its doors due to facility issues. Philadelphia Parks and Recreation told Eyewitness News that “due to a broken sanitation line, the Cobbs Creek Recreation Center building is temporarily closed. We anticipate the closure will last for 6-9 months.”
A community rally Wednesday night used strong imagery to make a major point; an empty casket, signifying Philadelphia’s children are at risk if the community doesn’t take necessary measures.

“This is the image so many of our children have been experiencing as the norm,” activist Kirsten Britt told CBS3. “This is the thing they see when they close their eyes and think about the friends that they’ve lost.”

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The homicide numbers in Philadelphia continue to rise. Bullet casings are on the street in the city’s Nicetown section where the latest victim was shot to death just past midnight on Thursday.

Homicide Numbers In Philadelphia Continue To Rise As Latest Gun Violence Victim Killed Outside Tender Touch Lounge In Nicetown
City leaders say they don’t know what to do about the gun violence problem.
“Each year entire generations of our people, our friends, our family, are having their lives stolen from them,” Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle "Bug Eyes" Outlaw said.
“Three nights ago we hit over 400, I didn’t sleep the whole evening. I looked at my ceiling, on my back, that entire night and tried to figure out how we fix this,” Philadelphia Mayor Jim "Banana Nose" Kenney said during the city’s bi-weekly crime briefing.
Police say the city has surpassed 408 homicides and more than 1,700 shootings.
The overnight shooting in Nicetown comes as the community mourns the loss of 24-year-old Chaundrah Jones, the mother of two young children. Jones was killed in a triple shooting Wednesday morning in the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood. Police say she and the three other women were targeted.
Both of these shootings are still being investigated and no one is in custody. City leaders say they need the public’s help. If you know something, say something.

By Jan CarabeoOctober 1, 2021 at 7:39 am

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Philadelphia continues on its breakneck pace to surpass last year’s staggering homicide total. Since Thursday night, at least 11 people in the city were shot, including three children.
Police say a 12-year-old girl was grazed by a bullet during a drive-by shooting at 16th Street and Lehigh Avenue in North Philly.
“Obviously, the child was in the wrong place at the wrong time. I’m sure she wasn’t being targeted, but second night in a row where we have a young girl that was shot just because someone carelessly and recklessly decided to open fire,” Philadelphia Police Deputy Commissioner Christine Coulter said.
Two other people were also shot, including an 18-year-man who died.
Earlier in North Philly, a 15-year-old boy was shot on the 2000 block of North 20th Street. He’s in critical condition.
Then in Southwest Philly, two people were shot on the 5700 block of Elmwood Street. One of the victims is just 11 years old. Police say he was shot three times but is in stable condition.
Early this week, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw addressed the rise in gun violence involving the city’s youth.
“We’re seeing that our offenders, our shooters, are also becoming younger and younger, and they are basically targeting those that are in their peer groups as well,” Outlaw said.
And just before 10 p.m. Thursday, a 53-year-old man was killed on Walton Avenue in West Philadelphia. Police say he was hit by stray gunfire when two men started shooting at each other.
The victim was already in a wheelchair, police say, having been the victim of gun violence in the past.
Last year, the city recorded 499 homicides. At this point, the total is 17% higher than this time last year.
There have been no arrests in any of these shootings. Anyone with information should call police.

‘It Makes My Heartbreak’: Gun Violence Continues To Take Toll On Philadelphia Families As City’s Homicide Numbers Rise

By Jasmine PayouteOctober 1, 2021 at 11:17 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Philadelphia is on pace to surpass 2020’s staggering homicide total. As of Friday night, there have been at least 413 homicides in the city, which is a 20% increase from this time last year.
“It makes my heartbreak and you think about the families, the heartbreak, the impact,” Marla Davis Bellamy, the director of Ceasefire Philadelphia said.
Crime in the city is taking a toll on Philadelphians as another day brings another victim and a grieving family.
On Friday, Terrence Shedrick, 43, was added to a growing list of homicides. The father of six was shot and killed in a double shooting outside of a bar on Island Avenue and Elmwood in Southwest Philadelphia around 3 p.m. during happy hour.
'It Makes My Heartbreak': Gun Violence Continues To Take Toll On Philadelphia Families As City's Homicide Numbers Rise
Shedrick’s wife joins families grieving victims of gun violence like the family of Nazeem Wiseman, an 18-year-old who was killed Thursday during a drive-by triple shooting on Lehigh Avenue and 16th Street. The shooting also injured a 12-year-old girl.
“Many of our community organizations and residents are under the impression that the city is going to solve this issue for us I believe,” Bellamy said.”
Ceasefire Philadelphia is a group that treats gun violence as a public health issue.
“What we do is actually recruit high-risk young people who in particular are 25 and younger who are deeply engaged in high-risk activity and very similar to someone who’s an alcoholic who has a sponsor,” Bellamy said.
Bellamy says fighting crime in the city takes a significant amount of money and resources that organizations like hers are not receiving. She’s fearful Philadelphia will hit the grim milestone of record homicides.
“Unfortunately, I just don’t think that we have really been able to grab a hold of what’s happening,” Bellamy says.
No arrests have been made in any of the shootings over the past 24 hours. There is a $20,000 reward on all homicides cases for information that leads to an arrest and conviction.

Family Claims They Called 911 Several Times During Deadly Attempted Break-In In Frankford But No One Answered

By Joe HoldenOctober 26, 2021 at 5:27 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A man is dead after Philadelphia police say he was shot while breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s house. Police confirm there is now an investigation into the family’s claims they called 911 as many as three times late Monday night and no one answered.
The investigation comes after CBS3 learned high-ranking police officials discussed the incident on a supervisors’ conference call Tuesday morning.

Police say it all started with reports a man had been shot twice around 11:30 p.m. Monday while attempting to break into a rowhome on the 1800 block of Sanger Street in Frankford.
sanger st intruder ex girlfriend
“He actually forced his way into the property by kicking the front door, actually kicked it completely off its hinges,” Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said.
Turns out, the family had called 911 three times for help before the shooting, according to off-camera interviews with family members. They claim no one answered.
As time wore on, police say a man inside the home retrieved his firearm and shot the intruder. CBS3 is told he has a permit to carry.
A business agent for the union representing dispatchers tells CBS3 there are severe staffing issues at the 911 center. The union argues there should be 350 dispatchers, but right now that number is at 230.
In the next two months, CBS3 is told classes of 60 new dispatchers will join the ranks and help alleviate some of the staffing strain.
Just last week, Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw addressed staffing matters confronting the department.
“If our recruitment applicant rate does not intensify and we don’t get our open positions filled, the PPD may have some difficulty providing basic public services in the community,” Outlaw said.
“We are aware of these reports. It’s being investigated by the police department to determine how many calls were made,” Philadelphia police Sgt. Eric Gripp said in a statement. “We advise people when they call 911, do not hang up. The call will be answered. Let it ring. It will be picked up.”
Police say that when you do continue to hang up and then call back, your call goes to the very end of the queue.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Nearly a dozen families in Philadelphia say they’re living on the edge and literally dodging bullets because they or a family member have cooperated in criminal investigations. A city councilmember is now collaborating with the sheriff’s department to provide them with a sense of safety.
“They want me dead because he witnessed something,” a Philadelphia mother said.
This Philadelphia mother says she lives in constant fear for her life and the lives of her children after a family member cooperated with authorities in a police investigation.
We are concealing her identity for her protection.
“I don’t sleep,” she said. “I probably get two hours of sleep a day because I’m up at night making sure he can sleep.”
She is one of several families who says they’re being harassed and terrorized in the wake of either their testimony or their family members’ cooperation in criminal cases.
“We’re getting threats. We getting shot at, how are we not victims?” she said.
“We have to do much better protecting our women and children,” Sister Taleah Taylor with the City of Dreams Coalition said.
Taylor, a community activist and anti-violence advocate, is working with these families now seeking the help of Councilmember David Oh.
“Nine mothers who are being victimized, like literally being shot at, physically assaulted because their children had cooperated with law enforcement, testified in court or they themselves had seen or said something,” Oh said.
Oh has gone as far as heading into neighborhoods where these families live.
“I went to a location and the first thing I saw when I went to the house was a lamp post outside one of the houses with clearly a bullet hole in it,” Oh said.
The councilmember is enlisting the help of the Philadelphia Sheriff’s Department hoping to provide safety resources and relocation opportunities to those facing the terror of retaliation.
“We’re looking at how we can help those families that after they cooperate not being left with no way of securing themselves or their families,” Sheriff Rochelle Bilal said, “because if you want people to come out and support law enforcement and testify and be witnesses, then you need to make sure they’re safe then and they’re safe afterwards.”
The Sheriff’s Department says this should be a joint effort between city entities, including police and the district attorney’s office, to come up with plans to keep families who cooperate in criminal cases safe.
They are working out the details now on those plans with many families asking for relocation options.

Philadelphia Police Investigating After 2 Women Injured In 2 Separate Shootings Hours Apart

By Alecia ReidOctober 28, 2021 at 8:32 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Statistics from the Philadelphia Police Department show the number of domestic violence incidents has increased since last year. Two women are in critical condition Thursday after being shot in separate incidents.
It was around 2 a.m. Thursday when neighbors in Southwest Philadelphia were jolted from their sleep as gunshots rang out inside on the 1100 block of South 56th Street.
“Right now, we’re all just in shock,” Kingsessing resident La’Don Oliver said.
Police say a 33-year-old woman was shot twice in the back in her children’s second-floor bedroom. Her four children, between the ages of 1 to 11, were in the home at the time of the shooting.
Authorities say the victim’s live-in boyfriend found her unconscious.
“I just want them to get to the bottom of what’s going on,” Oliver said.
The 1-year-old that family members tell CBS3 both adults share was also shot in the stomach. She is currently being treated at CHOP and is in stable condition.
“No major organs were hit and it could’ve possibly been a graze wound,” Oliver said.
Although police are still investigating exactly what happened, sources say the couple’s relationship has been rocky. So far, he is cooperating with police and it is unclear if this was a home invasion or disturbance. Police say there were no signs of break-in or struggle.
“She lost a lot of blood from what I understand so we’re just praying that her and her family can get through this,” Oliver said.
Within hours of that shooting, a 29-year-old woman was shot multiple times in the stomach, chest and side in Northeast Philadelphia. Police say it was a domestic dispute that left the woman lying on the street near Welton and Barlow Streets in the Somerton area.
“We know that there are six shell casings on the highway and we know that the vehicle that left the scene, Jeep Cherokee TrailBlazer, has very tinted windows and the rims are done up,” Chief Inspector Frank Vanore said.
Northeast detectives are on the hunt for that White Jeep. The victim is listed in critical condition at Jefferson Torresdale Hospital.
Police are working on a warrant for the person they believe is responsible.
So far, no weapon has been recovered.
According to police, domestic homicides in Philadelphia jumped from 14 in 2020 to 31 so far this year.
Experts say most victims are conditioned to believe they are to blame for all the violence.
“If there are guns in the house, the statistics go up even higher,” domestic violence expert Lily Sanders said. “If they’ve been strangled once, their statistics go up 10 fold that they will die of strangulation.”
If you are in an abusive relationship, experts suggest reaching out to someone you can trust and coming up with an exit plan.
