Philadelphia gas station hires AR-15-toting guards as crime spikes

Death to “Killadelphia.”
A Philadelphia gas station owner has taken drastic measures against soaring crime — hiring heavily armed security with AR-15s to patrol outside.
Fox 29 filmed a group of officers guarding a Karco gas station while wearing military-style clothing — including Kevlar bulletproof vests — while toting shotguns and even assault rifles.
The security firm’s ex-cop leader insisted online that the terrifying arsenal was needed because the City of Brotherly Love is fast earning an ominous new nickname — becoming the new “wild wild West” of “Killadelphia.”
Gas station owner Neil Patel told Fox 29 that he turned to the armed agents from the agency S.I.T.E. amid the worst spate of crime in his 20 years there — including a gang ripping out and carting away his ATM.
“We are tired of this nonsense — robbery, drug trafficking” and gangs “hanging around,” he told the local outlet.
“I am fearful for my employees, as well as my nice neighborhood [and] all the customers,” he said, saying criminals were “forcing us to hire the security.”
S.I.T.E. security boss Andre Boyer, a former Philly cop, said his staff is also mostly former cops — and all highly trained state agents.

“We wear Kevlar, we are trained — my guards go to training every other week,” he insisted, saying they were all “proficient” in using the assault rifles and Tasers.

“As a Pennsylvania state agent, the law tells us that we have a right to protect this property by any means necessary and with whatever force necessary,” he stressed.

“If I have to use force, I will use force,” Boyer told Fox News, saying that you “have to fight fire with fire sometimes.”

Some Karco customers told the local outlet that they were terrified by the show of firepower.

“Guns like this would be on the battlefield,” customer Robert Murray complained.

Others, however, said they support the owner — who said the violent crimes plaguing his business stopped as soon as the armed security arrived.

Viewers also showed they were clearly in favor — with a poll skyrocketing during the initial airing of the story, ending with 80% of respondents saying the show of force would make them feel safer.

Car thefts rising in Philadelphia. A dive into the numbers

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The number of stolen vehicles in Philadelphia is surging. It's even higher than last year when there was also a huge spike, according to data obtained from the Philadelphia Police Department.
Vehicle thefts are keeping officers busy. On average, Philadelphia police are called to about 36 stolen vehicles every day, which is almost twice as many from about four years ago.
"I want my car back bad," Jaysun Carroll, a sophomore at Temple University, said.
Security video appears to show the moments a dark-colored SUV pulls up next to a white Kia Sedan at 15th and Jefferson Streets in North Philadelphia in the early morning of Dec. 14.

Someone appears to smash into a back window, climb inside the car and then drive off.

"I was shocked," Carroll said. "I couldn't believe that my car actually got stolen the day I was about to leave."
Carroll says he had packed up the car the day before heading home to Virginia for winter break.
It had almost all of his belongings -- shoes, clothes, books and more -- ready to leave his off-campus apartment the next day for winter break, but when he walked outside to leave in the morning, his car was gone.
Carroll's mother then had to make the five-hour drive to pick him up.

"It's unsettling that you work hard for your things and someone comes along and steals it," Barbie Brown, Carroll's mom, said.
Data uncovered by CBS Philadelphia shows more than 12,700 stolen vehicles were reported to police in Philadelphia so far this year. Those numbers are nearly twice as many stolen vehicles during the same time period in 2019.

"It's crazy to see that it happens," Carroll said.
A CBS Philadelphia analysis of the most stolen vehicles by make in Philadelphia in 2022 shows Kia ranks fifth, followed by Hyundai, Honda and Ford. Chevrolet is the most stolen vehicle in the city by make.

Philadelphia police found Carroll's car about two miles away from where it was stolen.
Officers located it after using a tracking device that was in the car.
All of his belongings, however, were missing from the car. There is an online fundraiser set up to help him.

Security video from October shows three gunmen running from a vehicle and ambushing a 19-year-old man.

Shooting data from Philadelphia police obtained and analyzed by CBS3 shows Philadelphia's gun violence epicenters can be found in just a handful of ZIP codes.

Among the top three:

  • 19124, which includes Frankford, Feltonville and Juniata. with just over 180 shootings last year
  • Nearby 19140, which covers parts of North Philadelphia, Nicetown-Tioga and Hunting Park, had 196 shootings

Philadelphia saw multiple shootings after Kenney addressed gun violence

January 12, 2023 / 10:19 AM / CBS Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The violence in Philadelphia has Mayor Jim "Banana Nose" Kenney doubling down on the city's gun violence crisis.

He says it's his top priority this year.

During a press conference at City Hall Wednesday, Kenney talked about how he plans to tackle the problem in his final year in office. He acknowledged gun violence has taken hold of Philadelphia.

That point was emphasized by several shootings in the city later that same day, one of which resulted in the death of a teenager.

Just before 5:30 p.m., police responded to a shooting at Broad Street and Erie Avenue in North Philadelphia.

When officers got there, they found 16-year-old Semaj Richardson, of Tioga, laying on the sidewalk suffering from gunshot wounds to his chest, back and arm.

He was taken to Temple University Hospital where he was pronounced dead a little before 6 p.m.

Police say the shooting was captured by a private surveillance camera.

They suspect teenagers were responsible, but so far no arrests have been made.

About a half hour before that shooting, police responded to a triple shooting at 60th and Catherine Streets in the city's Cobbs Creek section.

Officers say the victims, all men, are a 17-year-old, a 21-year-old, and a 56-year-old.

The 56-year-old and 21-year-old were taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in critical condition.

The 17-year-old is in stable condition after getting grazed by a bullet.

Police haven't made any arrests yet in this shooting either.

Earlier in the day, Kenney laid out his top priorities for his final year in office, including enhancing public safety.

Kenney pointed out that between last year and this year, the city will spend $340 million dollars addressing the gun violence crisis, the most in the city's history.

But there is still a lot of work to do, considering there have been more than 500 homicides in the city each of the past two years. The city has not seen homicide that high since 1990.

62-year-old woman known as Mother Teresa recovers after quadruple shooting

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A Philadelphia woman who neighbors call Mother Teresa is recovering in the hospital after she and three others were shot overnight in the city's Nicetown-Tioga section. Many people say the nickname is fitting given her kindness.

"It just came out like bang bang bang bang," neighbor Michael White said.

Philadelphia police rushed to the 3700 block of North Carlisle Street around 9 p.m. Thursday after a shooting left four people hurt and neighbors now living in fear.

"I never expected this to be right in my face," White said. "Woo. I'm at a loss for words."

Veteran White, who served in the Army as a sergeant in Beirut, feels fortunate he wasn't shot.

"This is America," White said. "This is not supposed to be happening in our city. City of Brotherly Love."

Neighbors say the 62-year-old woman affectionately known as Mother Teresa was sitting in her bedroom when a bullet went through her window and hit her in the chest.

"She gives food. Whatever you need, if she can do it, she will," neighbor Jereo Watson said. "She's that nice of a person. She's got the biggest heart I ever met."

Police data shows more than 50 women have been hit by bullets in Philly this year. In other words, a woman has been shot in Philly, on average, about every other day.

snapshot.jpg

"This is a brand new world we're living in today and it's horrifying," White said.

The number of women and girls shot a year to date, 54, is less than each of the last two years during the same time. But it's still well above 2019, before the pandemic.

snapshot-1.jpg

"Just get the guns off the street and the people who are responsible," White said.

We did speak with the daughter of the woman nicknamed Mother Teresa and she is hoping her mother can come home in the next couple of days.

Police say three men ages 25, 34, and 40 were also hit in Thursday night's shooting. All of them are expected to survive.

No arrests have been made.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Police are searching for the driver of a stolen car that caused a violent three-car crash in Northeast Philadelphia.

Part of it was captured on camera.

"It's crazy!" a man said.

Security video shows a SEPTA bus traveling along Rising Sun Avenue in Lawndale early Thursday morning when police say on the other side of the bus, a stolen car crashed into a minivan that hit the SEPTA bus.

The bus then slammed right through a PNC bank.

"A reckless person, just don't have no remorse for life," a man said.

The damage on the minivan's passenger side shows the impact from getting struck by that stolen car.

18pkg-mp-rising-sun-ave-crash-transfer-frame-836.jpg

"I think the whole city is going bananas," a man said.

Car thefts are keeping Philly Police busy.

More than 6,900 cars have been stolen in Philly so far this year, according to Philly police data.

That means on average, officers are called to nearly 60 stolen cars every day in the city.

Matt Petrillo: "What do you make of that?"

Roosevelt Williamson: "I hope it doesn't ever happen to me. I really don't. But it's happening all over. All over."

Williamson went to the PNC bank to make a withdrawal.

"I'm looking and I thought they were rebuilding, doing the front over," Williamson said.

Williamson said he's going to have to start going to another bank.

Data also shows car thefts have been surging in the city for years.

18pkg-mp-rising-sun-ave-crash-transfer-frame-2161.jpg

In fact, there have been more stolen cars this year than all of 2019.

"I just think crime is getting worse in this city every year, it's getting worse. I don't know what's going on but it's scary," John Naulty said.

As crews continue to make repairs to PNC bank, officers are searching for the driver of the stolen car that caused this violent chain reaction.

Police say he left the scene after stealing another car. He also had a passenger who's now in critical condition.
