A 9-year-old boy sitting on a front step of a house in West Philadelphia was shot in the knee yesterday when two cars full of people tore up the street, shooting at each other.

He was the second child hit by a bullet
in two days.

"The child that was on the porch was an innocent victim," said Lt. Frank Vanore, of Southwest detectives.

"It appears that as he turned to flee it hit his rig
ht kne
e."

The shooting happened at about 1:55 p.m. on Callowhill Street near 62nd, police said.

At least a dozen children were playing outside at the time, neighbors said.

Police said last night that a suspect had been arrested and cha
rged.

Police said groups of people in a maroon van and a tan Ford Taurus began a wild gunbattle.

At least 15 shell casings were found littered over about two blocks later in the day.

The 9-year-old was sitting in a plastic chair when the shooting started, witnesses said. He was hit when he tried to flee, police said.

The boy was taken to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia where he was in stable condition yesterday. His name was not released.

Soon after the shooting, police noticed the maroon van a short distance away.

A man got out and tried to give a handgun to his mother, police said.

Both the man, Carl Williams, 33, of West Philadelphia, and his mother were taken in for questioning.

Last nigh
t, police said Williams was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, weapons violations and related offenses.

Police were still looking for the other suspects in the case. The motive for the gunbattle was unclear.

Another shooting Wednesday night left a 2-year-old boy hos
pitalized. Three adults werewounded.

The child, identified by police as Maquel Harrison, was in stable condition at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children yesterday with a thigh wound.

He was shot as he sat with his grandmother and other family members outside their house on Ogontz Avenue near Sparks Street, in West Oak Lane, about 9 p.m.

Police said the victims were wounded when two men opened fire with a black handgun.

Police said they had made no arrests by late yesterday and were
investigating a motive.

The others wounded were Raheim Harrison, 22, shot in the abdomen; Karen Harrison, 42, shot in the right foot and knee; and Donna McLean, 19, wounded in
the buttocks.<

They were treated at Albert Einstein Medical Center.

Residents of the West Philadelphia neighborhood where the nine-year-old was shot said they were troubled by the violence in the middle of the afternoon.

"All the kids were out there playing," said Rachel Miles, 23. "It could have been my nephew.

nAnd Collease Smith, 27, who has seven children, said "this isn't the first shooting that happened.

From now on, Smith said, "we'll be in the back yard."

The children hanging around the crime scene tape in the street said they were concerned about their friend.

"He's not going to be paralyzed, is he?" asked one boy.

Gun violence continues to torment Philadelphia's children.

Just a few weeks ago on J
uly 5, 8-year-old Danievia Rolona was shot in the chest and leg as she sat on her front steps in Port Richmond.

And on July 1, Bryan Pressley, 12, was grazed by a bullet
in a drive-by sho
oting on a corner in his East Frankford neighborhood.

Such a shame when coons shoot other coons in drive bys. JUST KIDDING!!! I love it when a coon kills another coon. When a coon dies, it is like a rabid dog being put down, it is a good thing.
