A number of Fayetteville residents found an unpleasant surprise in their driveways Tuesday.

Several neighborhoods off Cliffdale Road reported finding fliers from a hate group stuffed inside old newspapers, bagged in plastic similar to bags used by The Fayetteville Observer, police said.

Alice Price thought nothing of it when she brought the small blue bag into her home. But when she opened the bag, she said, she was shocked.

“I’ve never seen anything like this before,” said Price, who has lived in the neighborhood for 30 years.

Price, who is black, said some of her neighbors also received the flier, which rails against both Democrats and Republicans. The flier says it’s from an Arkansas-based Ku Klux Klan group.

Fayetteville police spokeswoman Theresa Chance said gang detectives are investigating the fliers, but the only crime that has been committed was littering, she said.

Nonetheless, police officers are attempting to intercept as many of the fliers as possible.

“There’s no overt threat,” Chance said. But just the subject matter “can be extremely threatening and scary for some.”

Price, who had already voted, said she did not know if the flier was meant to intimidate her.

If it was, she said, it had the opposite effect by showing her how important it was to vote.

“There’s no use having the privilege if you’re not going to use it,” she said.

Chance said it does not appear as if the fliers were targeting certain residents because of their race. She said some fliers were wrapped around advertising inserts and placed in newspaper bags. Others were inserted into dated newspapers.

Charles Broadwell, publisher of The Fayetteville Observer, said similar incidents have occurred sporadically over the years. He said the newspaper was not involved with the fliers’ distribution, and he condemned the use of the Observer in the fliers’ delivery.
