Hampton Parents Charged With Abuse, Neglect
Police have charged two Hampton parents with abuse and neglect after their five-week old daughter was admitted to the hospital Saturday night.
Officials say they were called to the Sentara CarePlex around 8:30pm to investigate allegations of abuse of an infant.
Following their investigation, authorities contend the child was assaulted by her father, then transported to the hospital for treatment of severe head and faci
al injuries.
The infant was later transferred via Nightingale to MCV hospital in Richmond for treatme
nt.
Police have charged Mary Lee Mitchell, 19, and Elijah Tyrone Mitchell, 21, both of the first block of Twin Lakes Circle, in connection with the child's injuries.
Mary Mitchell was charged with child neglect after officials allege she waited two days before obtaining medical attention for the child.
Elijah Mitchell was charged with the battery.
Both remain in the custody of the Hampton City Jail.
The child remains in guarded condition at MCV in Richmond.
