Man Sentenced To Life, Not Death For Killing Potential Witness

POSTED: 12:17 pm EDT April 18, 2007

ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- A man was sentenced to life in prison in the shooting of a woman prosecutors said was a potential witness against him in a drug case.

Omar Powell was 18 when he shot Christine Kennedy outside an Allentown bar in 1997.

Prosecutors argued Kennedy was shot to keep her from testifying against Powell in a drug case. They said her status as a potential witness was an aggravating factor that warranted the death penalty.

Defense attorneys argued against the death penalty, noting Powell's age and questioning the reliability of some prosecution testimony. They said it came from witnesses seeking to lessen their own prison sentences.
