NYC women contracted infections from cosmetic surgeries in Dominican Republic

Eight women from New York City who had cosmetic surgery in the Dominican Republic contracted infections, the city’s Health Department reported Thursday.
The procedures included liposuction, abdominoplasty and breast lifts.
Two other infections were reported in women from Connecticut, the health alert said.
Nearly all the women were treated at one clinic in Santo Domingo — Centro International de Cirugia Estetica in March and April, officials said.
The infected patients are 28 to 39 years old.
“Symptoms and findings have included abdominal abscesses, pain, wound discharge, and fever,” said Don Weiss, director of surveillance in the department’s bureau of communicable disease.
No deaths have occurred.
The women received antibiotics and have undergone surgical procedures to remove infected issue.
Infections resulting following cosmetic surgery in the Dominican Republic has been an ongoing problem. The surgical procedures there are much cheaper than in the U.S.
Weiss urged doctors to report patients with cellulitis, soft tissue infections or wounds resulting from cosmetic surgery.
