A 29-year-old man was fatally shot in the head on a Brooklyn street early Tuesday – following a bloody Memorial Day weekend with 23 people shot across the city, authorities said.
The victim was struck around 1:40 a.m. near the corner of Marcy and Lexington avenues in Bedford-Stuyvesant after a suspect in a red car pulled up and opened fire, police said.
He was rushed to the Kings County Hospital Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The motive for the slaying remained unclear later in the morning.
The victim’s name has not been released, pending family notification.
About an hour later, a 21-year-old man was blasted in the torso at the corner of Atlantic and Autumn avenues in Cypress Hills, authorities said.
He was taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where he is listed in critical condition.

The circumstances of that shooting are also unknown.
In the Bronx on Tuesday, a 21-year-old man is in stable condition after being shot twice in his left leg in front of 850 Longwood Ave. around 11:50 a.m. The unidentified shooter, described as wearing a black shirt with white lettering, a dark-blue shirt and dark sneakers, fled on foot.
The Brooklyn violence came hours after a 72-year-old woman was struck by an apparent stray bullet inside her South Ozone Park, Queens home around 11:30 p.m. Memorial Day, cops and police sources said.

In total on Monday, six people were shot across the city in as many incidents, authorities said. On Monday’s date last year – which was the Sunday before Memorial Day – four people were shot in as many incidents, cops said.
Seven people were shot in five incidents on Sunday – compared to a single person shot on that day last year, authorities said.
Four people were shot in as many incidents Saturday – a slight dip from 2021, when six people were shot on that date.

On Friday, six people took bullets in five incidents — down from seven people shot in six incidents on that day last year.
“It was the first hot weekend of the year,” Joseph Giacalone, a retired NYPD Detective Sergeant and adjunct professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, told The Post. “Now, we’re going into the dog days of summer, where historically we’ve seen violence rise.”
“When you add on the diaphragm bill back in action, I am afraid of the consequences to come. And you’ve got the decision of qualified immunity on the horizon. So, we’re not in a good place, legislatively nor with violence.”
Police at the scene on Lexington Avenue and Marcy Avenue.Police at the scene on Lexington Avenue and Marcy Avenue.Robert Mecea
“When you’re doing year-to-year comparisons, last year we had a terrible April, May and June for shootings,” he added. “The numbers were high, so we expected them to be lower [this year.]”
A Manhattan cop with two decades at the job told The Post the summer could bring an onslaught of violence and pointed the finger at bail reform policies.
“There’s a lot of guns out here, and there’s no consequences and the perps know it,” the cop said. “They read the papers. They realize their friends have guns and they’re back out on the street. They think, ‘I can get one, too.’ And the community gun is always the best gun because it’s local and they just share the gun and get bullets. What they’ll do is they’ll switch out with another local crew.”
“Until they crack down on bail reform, this is going to continue,” added the NYPD veteran. “I think we’re going to have one of the hottest summers ever, and I think this place is going to be like Chicago.”

An apparently innocent bystander was shot by a stray bullet as he waited for a city bus in Harlem on Sunday — one of 19 gun-violence victims across the Big Apple during the first weekend of June, authorities said.
The 40-year-old victim was standing at a bus stop at West 145th Street and Amsterdam Avenue around 9:30 p.m. when shots rang out and he was struck in the shin, authorities said.
He was not believed to have been the intended target, cops said.
Another man waiting for the bus was struck by shattered glass from the bus shelter, which was hit by fire, police said.
Both men suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
A 17-year-old boy was taken into custody over the shooting, cops said. Charges against him are pending.

The NYPD’s 30th Precinct tweeted a photo of the gun that was used in the shooting and subsequently recovered.
“Late this evening your 30th Precinct cops heard shots being fired and ran toward them,” the tweet said. “As a result the individual who illegally possessed this gun was arrested without incident.”
About 20 minutes later, a 24-year-old woman was blasted in the left leg on Lincoln Place near Buffalo Avenue in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, police said.

She was taken to Interfaith Medical Center, where she was listed in stable condition.
A male suspect fled in a white vehicle, cops said.
The motive and circumstances were unclear.
Hours later, a 21-year-old man was shot in the head in front of a building believed to be used as a recording studio on Wyckoff Avenue near Schaefer Street in Ridgewood, Queens, around 1:30 a.m. Monday, cops said.

The victims were among 19 people shot across the city over the weekend as temperatures heated up.
Four people were shot in as many incidents Friday. That’s down from six people being shot in five incidents on that day in 2021, cops said.
Seven people also were shot in five incidents Saturday, up from three in as many incidents on that day last year.

Meanwhile, Sunday saw eight gun-violence victims in seven incidents, compared to nine people shot in six incidents in 2021.
The gun violence comes as Gov. Kathy Hochul on Monday signed bills introduced in the Assembly and Senate last week that raised the age requirement for the purchase of a semi-automatic rifle from 18 to 21.

A total of 185 murders have been reported so far this year, an 11.5 percent decrease from the 209 reported during same period last year.
But all six of the other major crime categories saw increases last week and this year overall – with the most marked jumps in grand larcenies, car thefts and robberies.
Forty-nine crimes were reported in the city’s transit system last week, more than a 122% jump from 22 during the same 7-day period in 2021.
Year-to-date, transit crimes are up to 1,037 from 666 in the same time frame in 2021, the data shows.

At least 1 killed, 8 injured in shooting on Harlem street

A college hoops star had his promising career snuffed out when he came home from school for the summer — and was senselessly shot dead in a mass shooting in Harlem early Monday.
In what was a tragic and ominous precursor to Tuesday’s official start to summer, where city crime typically soars, Darius Lee, 21, was among nine people shot near East 139th Street and Fifth Avenue at the late-night gathering. Lee, a 6-foot-6 guard from Harlem who had been playing for Houston Baptist University in Texas, was the sole fatality and not the intended target, cops said.
“He was an innocent kid that was in school playing basketball,” Lee’s stricken sister, Tiara, told The Post. “He cared about basketball. He decided to stay outside one day, and this is what happens.
“My brother’s gone,” she said sadly. “Great kid. He’s gone for no reason. I’ve been trying to figure it out myself.”
Lee was taken to Lincoln Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. He attended SUNY Sullivan Community College before transferring to Houston.

00:00 Darius LeeDarius Lee, a college basketball player for Houston Baptist University, was killed in a mass shooting at a Father’s Day cookout in Harlem on June 19, 2022.
“When I first found out about it, I had heard about the shooting in Harlem, but I was just so devastated when I came to find out that Darius Lee was the victim who was killed,” said Jorge Lopez, who coached the hoopster at St. Raymond High School for Boys in The Bronx.

“I’m completely heartbroken,” Lopez said. “He had everything going for him — a great career, a great family.

“He loved coming back and monitoring young people. He worked out with our guys, got to play pick-up with the players and just spend time with them.”

Lopez said the team plans to immortalize Lee, who wore No. 42.

Chris Williams, an assistant coach at St. Raymond, added, “He was an amazing young man, starting to get to the height of his athletic potential.

“He was the model citizen, a great friend, an amazing kid,” Wiliams said. “He was the best I’ve ever been a part of in my life. He was someone you wanted to root for, work with and work for and go the extra mile for.

“He’s who I’d want my son to be friends with.

“I know that people say this all the time when you have senseless murders and killings, but he was truly special. I can’t even imagine what his mom is going through.”

WIlliams said Lee scored 52 points in a game this year and averaged 18 points per game.

“He was one of the top layers in his conference, an amazing athlete,” the coach said. “He played in Dyckman Park with me, actually won the championship in 2018, was the MVP.

“With him, there was positivity in everything, whether it was his playing time, his recruiting process,” Williams added.

“He was a 6’6’’ kid, and one of his best friends was 5’7’’, and he made sure that his 5’7’’ best friend always felt a part of whatever he was doing. So if he was playing in a tournament, he be like, ‘Put my guy [in].’ “

In a statement released Monday, Houston Baptist University said it was also mourning Lee’s death.

“Lee was on track to graduate with his bachelor’s degree in December and was recently named HBU Robbie Robertson Male Student-Athlete of the Year,” the school said. “He was a second team All-Southland Conference selection for the 2021-22 season and led the Huskies in scoring and rebounding and was sixth in the nation in steals per game.”

“We are in shock and cannot wrap our heads around this news,” Cottrell wrote. “My heart breaks for his mom, his sister and his entire family, and four our basketball team. The only thing we can find comfort in right now is knowing where Darius is. He is in the arms of Jesus.”

The school’s athletic director, Steve Moniaci, said Lee had a bright future.

“This is, unfortunately, yet again, another example of the senseless gun violence that seems to be plaguing our country right now and we all pray it will cease,” Moniaci said.

A memorial sprouted up outside Lee’s home, with dozens gathered to pray and pay their respects to the basketball standout.

Stace Daniels, a strength and conditioning coach at St. Raymonds who also worked with Lee, said he’s now worried about others in the area.

“I have young people I currently coach who I spoke with today who said they spoke with him [Sunday] to congratulate him on his commitment to Houston Baptist University,” Daniels said.

“But as a former Harlem resident who still works in Harlem, it’s hard not to be worried on a daily basis for the violence, especially gun violence happening in Harlem,” Daniels said.

Police have not determined a motive for the shooting, and no suspects are in custody.

At least five people were hurt in separate shootings that erupted in Upper Manhattan and The Bronx late Monday, cops said.
A man was shot on Madison Avenue near East 135th Street in East Harlem, on the grounds of NYCHA’s Lincoln Houses, around 6:20 p.m., cops said.
He was standing in front of a building when a man blasted him in the left arm, police said.
The victim was taken to Harlem Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The suspect fled on a bike, joined by a group of other people, cops said.
The gunplay came hours after a mass shooting in Harlem killed a college basketball star and injured eight other people.
No arrests had been made in connection to that case by Tuesday morning.
In The Bronx just after 9:30 p.m., two men were shot by a drive-by gunman just off a basketball court on Courtlandt Avenue near East 158th Street on the grounds of NYCHA’s Jackson Houses in Melrose, cops and police sources said.

Violent crime has increased by nearly 40% this year in New York City compared to the same period last year.
Violent crime has increased by nearly 40% this year in New York City compared to the same period last year.

Major crimes spiked by nearly 40% so far this year compared with the same period last year, including robberies, grand larceny and burglaries, NYPD data released Monday shows.
The hikes in other crimes came as shootings and murder decreased, according to the data.
Robbery has increased by 39.4% so far in 2022 over last – from 5,670 to 7,903, the data shows.
Grand larceny increased from 15,920 to 23,786 for a whopping 49.4% increase, the data show. The city has also experienced 7,389 burglaries so far this year compared to 5,522 in 2021 for a hike of 33.8%. Felonious assaults saw a 19.3% hike from 10,153 to 12,113 year over year.
At the same time, there were 197 murders in the city so far this year, compared to 226 in the same period of 2021 for a drop of 12.8%, the data shows. The same period saw 747 people shot in the city, as compared to 817 last year for a decline of 8.6%.

Joseph Giacalone, a John Jay College of Criminal Justice professor and a former NYPD sergeant, explained that shootings were down mainly because they skyrocketed last year.
“You went up against big numbers last year. That’s what’s leveling off the shootings,” he said. “But everything else is awful. Burglaries, robberies, grand larceny, felony assaults. We’re talking double digits in everything but murders and shootings.”
“You lost a year you’re never going to recover. It’s going to be a year where you’re up 30% to 40% in crime.”

What do you think? Post a comment.

A police source with two decades on the job cautioned that summer had barely begun and that shootings would likely rise.

“You can’t really judge the shootings right now,” the Manhattan cop said. “It’s not real summer yet. I’m talking when we get those straight 90-degree days. It’s going to pick up.”

One person was killed and at least seven others were wounded — including a 15-year-old boy — in a spate of shootings across the Big Apple overnight into Saturday, police said.
In the deadly incident, a man was gunned down during a fight inside a bodega at Crescent Street, near Stanley Avenue in the East New York section of Brooklyn shortly after 10 p.m. Friday.
The victim, whose name was not immediately released, was shot in the face and chest and pronounced dead at Brookdale Hospital, cops said.
Police at the scene arrested a 27-year-old man who had been shot in the chest and groin after allegedly finding a firearm on him. He was listed in stable condition at Brookdale and charges were pending, according to the NYPD.
It wasn’t immediately clear was fueled the dispute between the two customers, a department spokesperson said.

The mayhem also included an off-duty auxiliary NYPD sergeant shot and robbed for his motorcycle in The Bronx and two innocent bystanders struck by stray bullets while in the back seat of a cab in Manhattan, police sources said.
Cops said the teen boy was shot in the right arm at around 1:30 a.m. Saturday along Hughes Avenue and East 180th Street in the East Tremont section of The Bronx. The youth, who was uncooperative, was taken to Jacobi Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.
Less than two hours later, on Staten Island, a 48-year-old man was shot in the face outside a Richmond Terrace tavern. The victim was found holding a towel to his bloody face when officers arrived at about 3:15 a.m., police said. He was taken to Richmond County Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries and was not cooperative, the NYPD said.

“We don’t believe they were the intended targets,” an NYPD spokeswoman told The Post.
Investigators believe three shooters were aiming at a couple wearing a lot of jewelry that they spotted at a nearby dollar pizza spot, police sources said. The intended targets were not hit, according to the sources.
Cops recovered three shells from the scene. The two victims had gotten into the cab on West 37th Street between Seventh and Eighth Avenues and were headed westbound when they were shot, the sources said. An NYPD spokesman could not immediately confirm that the two men were medical students.

NYPD exodus ‘has become a stampede:’ PBA leader Lynch

The NYPD’s rank-and-file took another huge hit in June, as 523 cops are leaving the force, with 123 of those officers resigning — the most in a single month in at least a decade, according to staggering pension fund stats obtained by The Post.
Of the total number of cops exiting, 400 are retiring, according to a police source.
To date, 2,119 cops have left the job in 2022, with 1,472 retiring and 647 resigning, a 38% spike over the previous record of 1,535 for the first six months of 2020, the attrition numbers show.
“The exodus has become a stampede. We’re not only losing experienced veterans. We’re also losing cops in the prime of their careers who are taking their talents elsewhere,” said Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch.
“The NYPD cannot continue papering over this staffing crisis with more and more overtime. That will drive even more cops to pursue other opportunities where they can make more money and have a better quality of life,” he added.
The rush at the NYPD’s Pension Section office at 1 Police Plaza on Thursday resembled a concert ticket giveaway, the police source noted. Most of the “hundreds” on line had filed their papers earlier and were turning in their ID and shield, the person added.
“NYPD members are leaving in droves. I’ve been to this office about 2 dozen times and have never seen more than 2-3 people waiting,” tweeted retired NYPD detective Rob O’Donnell, who included a photo of the crowded room.
“Not even months after 9/11 was it like this,” chirped Blue, a retired Emergency Service Unit cop. Another commenter tweeted a photo of the same line snaking out the door.

Last month, the Post reported that more than 1,500 officers had either resigned or retired.
Officers typically work 20 years or more to collect their full pension, which can equate to 50% of their final average salary. The data obtained by The Post shows those who are “running their time,” or using accrued days off before they exit. Those cops are still counted in the NYPD’s own stats as being on the force.
Anti-cop hostility, bail reform, rising crime and the city’s vaccination mandate — currently on pause — have agitated the rank and file, who are looking to greener pastures by taking other civil service tests and heading to police departments, such as on Long Island, or the Port Authority, MTA and out of state, like Florida, Texas and Arizona.

Frustrated NYPD detectives have also “had enough,” The Post reported this week. More than 100 investigators retired in June, and another 75 are expected to put in their papers this month.
Joseph Giacalone, a John Jay College of Criminal Justice professor and a former NYPD sergeant, said there were only two other people on line when he filed for retirement in 2011.
As for the mass exodus, he doesn’t see an about-face coming anytime soon. “It appears there are only two types of NYPD officers left: Those that want to get out and can and those that want to get out but can’t.”

One person was killed and at least 12 others were injured in a spate of shootings across New York City during a bloody nine-hour period on Independence Day, police said.
Only the borough of Staten Island was spared from the stretch of violence that began at around 3:10 p.m. in Queens, when a gunman opened fire at a man in his 30s.
The victim was found in the middle of the street in Cambria Heights with a gunshot wound to his hip. He was rushed to Long Island Jewish Hospital in critical but stable condition, the NYPD said.
About two hours later, the boyfriend of an NYPD employee was shot and wounded in Soho as he sat in a gray Honda sedan in front of a high-end Dior shop, law-enforcement sources said.
The 27-year-old was shot in the right underarm and was rushed to a nearby hospital by his girlfriend. He is expected to live, police said.
Less than an hour later at 5:50 p.m. in The Bronx, a gunman approached a 24-year-old man near 775 Eagle Ave. in Melrose, shot him in the left leg and fled, the NYPD said.
The victim was at Lincoln Hospital in stable condition.

Then in the same Bronx police precinct, a dispute between two groups near Pulaski Park broke out at 7:45 p.m. that ended with a 35-year-old man suffering a gunshot wound to the torso, according to cops.
He was also rushed to Lincoln Hospital in stable condition, police said.

Minutes later at 10:15 p.m., four people were shot in Rochdale, Queens. Two men and a woman each suffered bullet wounds to their right foot and a third man was shot in the shoulder. All four were rushed to Jamaica Hospital and are listed in stable condition, police said.
Back in the Bronx, three men were shot by a gunman who fled in a white sedan at around 10:30 p.m. in Belmont. One was shot in the chest and died at St. Barnabas Hospital. Another was shot in the leg and the third was shot in the arm. The two surviving victims are in stable condition at St. Barnabas. Police said it was unclear if they were targeted.
One last person was shot just before the holiday wrapped up. Shortly before midnight, a man was shot on Bainbridge Street in Brooklyn, police said.
No arrests were reported in any of the shootings.

More than 50 people were shot in the Big Apple over the Fourth of July weekend — including 21 gun violence victims on Independence Day alone, according to police.
The count of 52 shooting victims between Friday through Monday marked a 62.5% increase from the same period last year, when 32 people were wounded by gunfire across the city, data provided by the NYPD shows.

Nine people were shot Sunday, compared to five on the same date last year. Saturday’s victims of gunfire totaled 16, double the number shot that day in 2021. And six people were shot Friday, the same number as last year.
“What crime is doing is it is overshadowing all that we’re doing,” Mayor Eric Adams said at a Queens press conference. “We have some real W’s, and crime is the No. 1 issue on New Yorkers’ minds right.
“Regardless of all the good stuff we’re doing, until we get crime under control New Yorkers are going to feel we are not making progress, which we are,” he said. “Is it moving as fast as want? No. I want it faster. I’m like New Yorkers. I want results overnight.”
The bloody weekend included a shootout at a bodega that left two men dead and a third critically wounded in East New York just before the end of July Fourth. The three victims all possessed firearms at the Loring Avenue Raspberry Deli Corp, cops said.

The rash of gun violence plaguing the Big Apple didn’t subside with the end of the Fourth of July weekend, with nine more people shot — including two who were killed — in the 24 hours that followed the bloody holiday.
Two people were shot dead and seven others were wounded Tuesday, in the wake of an Independence Day weekend that saw 51 people shot, seven of them fatally, in 36 incidents across New York City.
“The unacceptable brazen and senseless violence over the holiday weekend, in some instances, goes back to exactly what we’ve said several times,” NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell said Wednesday.
“These are violent criminals who should not be on the street, either because of a lengthy criminal record or because of open cases.”
NYPDShootings continued after a bloody Independence Day weekend.Paul Martinka
The top cop noted that the burst of gunplay marked a departure from what would have been an 11-week decline in shootings and homicides. She said there had been arrests in five of the weekend’s gun slayings.
Police also recovered 55 firearms and made 57 gun arrests, with a total of 580 major felony busts over the holiday, Sewell said.
“We knew going into this weekend as the Fourth of July, as the city fully reopens, required a significant amount of resources. And that is exactly what we deployed,” she said at a press conference. “Your NYPD was out there for the overwhelming number of people who simply wanted and deserved to have a nice holiday weekend with their friends and families.”

In a press conference in Queens on Tuesday, Mayor Eric Adams had said the city has made some headway in reducing crime in the five boroughs — but has more to do.
This national problem has played out on our streets,” Adams said. “We are making the right adjustments. We’re moving in the right direction and we’re going to win this battle.”
Some critics, however, continued to take aim at the mayor and at Gov. Kathy Hochul over the deadly weekend outbreak.
“While people were getting shot all over #NYC this July 4th weekend the mayor was busy taking jet ski lessons & patrolling beaches on shark patrol since he clearly has lost the war against crime on the ground,” tweeted former GOP mayoral hopeful Curtis Sliwa.

“The ultimate narcissistic, tone-deaf mayor,” Sliwa added.
The state GOP also took to Twitter on behalf of Republican gubernatorial candidate Lee Zeldin.
“@KathyHochul’s crime wave has spun out of control and it is only getting worse!” the party committee tweeted. “@leezeldin and NY Republicans have a plan….”
New York City Councilman Keith Powers took a more global view, however.
“And at home — more gun violence as well. Terrible,” Powers tweeted. “Our country has a gun problem that will never be solved with more guns.”
In a statement to The Post on Wednesday, Hochul said she was committed to keeping communities safe from gun violence.
“Like all New Yorkers, I’m heartbroken over the horrific shootings in New York City this past weekend, and I will continue fighting for tough gun safety laws, investments in gun violence prevention, combating the spread of illegal guns, and strengthening public safety in every community in our state,” Hochul said.

Zeldin, in a statement, said of Democrats, “instead of handcuffing criminals, they’re handcuffing our police officers and justice system.”

“We must protect law enforcement more, not less, so they can take illegal firearms off our streets and safeguard our neighborhoods,” he said, also calling for the repeal of cashless bail and the ousting of left-wing district attorneys.
The July Fourth bloodshed marked a huge jump from the 32 people injured in 27 shootings over the holiday weekend last year, NYPD statistics show.
The victims cut across a wide spectrum of New Yorkers — from a pair of former college rugby players wounded while sitting in a cab in Midtown to a beloved 62-year-old Bronx neighborhood “grandfather” who was gunned down by stray bullets.
Twenty-one of this year’s victims were shot on Monday’s 246th birthday of American independence. By comparison, there were 13 people shot on July 4, 2021.

Nine people were also shot on July 5, 2021, though none of them died, according to the police department data.

The violence continued on Wednesday morning, with a man shot in the leg in Brooklyn.
