Neo-nazis explain flyers in Salt Lake neighborhood

A national Neo-Nazi organization has claimed responsibility for a handful of racist and anti-Semitic fliers distributed in a Sugar House neighborhood last week. The National Socialist Movement says members or their organization, also known as Storm Troopers, wrapped two fliers around a free student newspaper from the University of Utah, and threw them into several yards and driveways on Blaine Avenue in Salt Lake City.

“We teach separatism, we believe that whites should be with whites, blacks should be with blacks, and Jews should be with Jews,â┚¬ says Spokesman for the NSM, Charles Wilson.

Wilson says his organi
zation does not preach hate, “it’s a total misconception. We don’t hate anybody. We don’t hate blacks we don’t hate Jews we don’t hate Mexicans. We teach and preach separatism, we believe you should stay within your own race,â┚¬ says Wilson.

People who live on Blaine Avenue say that is baloney. “It sounds like hate to me,â┚¬ says Kevin McDonough, who lives next to an interracial couple. “I thought we’d gotten past that years and years ago, 40 years ago, 50 years ago with the Civil Rights Movement,â┚¬ says McDonough.

The literature was dispersed Wednesday morning and consisted of two fliers one depicts an Africoon-Americoon male and a white female in a picture and above the photo reads the headline:

“WILL YOU DESTROY THE BLOODLINE OF YOUR ANCESTORS LIKE SHE WILL HERS?â┚¬

Below the picture another sentence reads:

“KEEP YOUR BLOODLINES PURE! SAY NO TO RACE MIXING!â┚¬ [/CENT

A Second flier rails against a perceived Jewish cabal that controls the U.S. government, it reads:

“America is being controlled by the Jews. They are polluting the minds of our American government. How much longer will you stand back and let this happen? Will you let them destroy what your European ancestors built?â┚¬

There are several interracial couples who live on Blaine Avenue and surrounding streets, the FBI has opened an investigation into the distribution of the fliers. The head of the FBI in Salt Lake City, Timothy Fuhrman, says if the fliers were used as an attempt to threaten and scare people into moving from the neighborhood that could be a federal crime.

Reporter Chris Jones asked Wilson if the fliers where an attempt to motivate the interracial couples on the street to move. “I don’t think they (flier distributors) see a mixed couple and actually tried targeting them,â┚¬ says Wilson, “for them (people in an interracial relation
ship) to feel singled out or whatever it’s probably their own guilty consciences,â┚¬ Wilson continues.

Wilson says that his Storm Troopers likely distributed the fliers without much planning at all, “a lot of times we'll just drive, pick a neighborhood, and just hit it. You know, no rhyme no reason. It’s there, you know an opportunity comes up and you do it. You know, sometimes there’s thought in it sometimes there’s not.â┚¬

Wilson says the fliers break no laws and are simply an example of free speech that the NSM uses to recruit new members, Wilson says the technique works, “absolutely, we’re bringing on about 13 to 18 new members every week,â┚¬ says Wilson.

Wilson would not say how many members the NSM has in Utah.
