Brooklyn car crash kills teen girl, injures four others: cops

The teen driver who smashed into another vehicle in Brooklyn while fleeing cops — killing his 18-year-old female passenger — has been charged with vehicular manslaughter, police said Monday.
Ackeem Chambers, also 18, was trying to get away from cops at the intersection of Eastern Parkway and Rogers Avenue in Crown Heights around 2 a.m. Sunday when he slammed his 2015 Hyundai Sonata into a 2007 Toyota Solara, gravely injuring Jada Rollins, who sat in the back seat, cops said.
Both Rollins and Chambers were taken to the Kings County Hospital Center, where Rollins was pronounced dead.

Chambers, who suffered only minor injuries, was charged with vehicular manslaughter, vehicular assault, reckless endangerment, reckless driving, failure to yield to traffic signals and failure to obey a traffic signal, authorities said.
The smash-up left Chambers’ car completely decimated, police said.
In addition to Rollins and Chambers, two 19-year-old male passengers were removed from the Sonata in stable condition, cops said.

Driver doing donuts in NYC runs over bystander

A hit-and-run driver doing donuts on a Manhattan street was captured on video slamming into a bystander who appeared to be trying to film the reckless act over the weekend, police said.
The victim, a 23-year-old man, was struck by the red Infiniti Sedan just after midnight on Saturday as the driver drifted in circles for a large crowd near Vandam Street and Greenwich Street in Hudson Square, according to police.
Police said the victim was critically injured — suffering a fractured skull, brain injury and severe trauma to the body.
Video of the incident shared by the NYPD shows two men first walking towards the spinning car to record the spectacle from up close with their cell phones.
The victim then heads towards the center to join them when he trips and falls on the ground, directly in the car’s revolving path, according to the footage.
The video cuts out as the victim is pinned under the car. A final clip shows some in the crowd then raising their arms in disbelief over the horrific scene.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Pennsylvania State Police have identified and charged the driver accused of striking and killing two Pennsylvania State Police troopers and a pedestrian along I-95 in South Philadelphia on Monday. Twenty-one-year-old Jayana Tanae is facing numerous charges including three counts of murder, homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence and involuntary manslaughter.

The crash happened on the southbound lanes near the Broad Street exit, around 12:40 a.m. Monday.
Pennsylvania State Police said 33-year-old Trooper Martin F. Mack and 29-year-old Trooper Branden T. Sisca were responding to a call of a man walking along Southbound I-95 near the sports complex just before 1 a.m. As they were attempting to put the man into custody, a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed struck all three men.

“The impact was so great that it threw the troopers over into the northbound lanes of Interstate 95,” Pennsylvania State Police Capt. James Kemm said.
Police add that’s when passersby jumped in.
“There were some witnesses attempting CPR on the troopers on the left side of the road,” Kemm said.
But they didn’t make it. Chopper 3 found car parts scattered on the highway.

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf said Monday is a sad day for the commonwealth.
“There are three families mourning the loss of loved ones,” Wolf said. “There are friends mourning those losses, colleagues, all of us. It’s a reminder for the state troopers of what a heroic thing that they do for us each and every day. They lay their lives on the line for all of us, every day.”

Police say Tanae’s vehicle stopped a short distance later after she also struck a barrier.
The pedestrian was identified as 28-year-old Reyes Rivera Oliveras, of Allentown.

An alleged drunk driver accused of killing two Pennsylvania state troopers and the pedestrian the duo were helping recently boasted to her Twitter followers she was the “best drunk driver ever.”
Jayana Tanae Webb, 21, faced three counts of third-degree murder after prosecutors said she mowed down troopers Branden Sisca, 29, and Martin Mack III, 33, along with pedestrian Reyes Rivera Oliveras, 28, on the shoulder of I-95 Monday night in Philadelphia, CBS 3 reported.
The deadly crash unfolded as troopers were responding to a call of a person walking in the southbound lanes of the busy interstate highway near the Broad Street exit, the station said.
Webb allegedly admitted to driving under the influence and reportedly cried as she was arraigned on 18 felony counts, including two counts of manslaughter of a law enforcement officer.

Both of the troopers left behind wives. Mack had two children and Sisca’s widow is pregnant, according to fundraising sites.
Earlier this year, the suspect had taken to Twitter to brag about her alleged illegal activity.
“If you ask me, I’m the best drunk driver ever,” she tweeted on Jan. 15.

Jayana Webb’s Blood Alcohol Level Twice Legal Limit At Time Of Crash That Killed 2 Pennsylvania State Troopers, Pedestrian, Sources Say

By CBS3 StaffMarch 23, 2022 at 8:32 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — The woman charged in the I-95 crash that claimed the lives of two Pennsylvania State Police troopers and another man had a blood-alcohol level that was double the legal limit at the time of the crash, sources close to the investigation tell CBS3. Jayana Webb’s preliminary hearing was postponed until April 5. Her attorney says he needs more time to prepare.
A judge denied her bail, so she remains in jail.
Meanwhile, thin blue line flags fly in solemn tribute to the troopers at the crash site on I-95 South, near the Broad Street Exit, in honor of the two troopers, 33-year-old Martin Mack and 29-year-old Branden Sisca, killed in the line of duty.
Branden T. Sisca and Martin MackNewly released audio from police dispatch reveals more on the life-saving efforts made to help the troopers and man struck by the suspected drunk driver.
Philadelphia police realized something was wrong when the troopers stopped speaking on their radio.
Dispatcher: “Southbound I-95 at Broad Street. Possible auto accident. Getting a non-response from the officers.”
State police say 21-year-old Jayana Tanae Webb, was driving under the influence when she fatally struck the troopers, who were trying to get a pedestrian into the back of their cruiser to safety.

Officer: “Looks like a trooper might be down. Uh, they’re doing CPR on him right now. It’s two troopers down.”

The pedestrian, 28-year-old Reyes Rivera Oliveras, was also killed.

Troopers shut down the southbound lanes of traffic for hours during the investigation.
On Tuesday, Webb was arraigned on charges of murder, DUI and a long list of other crimes.
Webb’s lawyer Michael Walker is urging the public to avoid rushing to judgment.
“She’s distraught, to say the least. Certainly, she’s distraught for the situation she’s in, but more so the car that she was driving stuck three people and those three people are now dead, and that’s a sobering feeling,” attorney Michael Walker said.
During her arraignment Tuesday, the judge read a statement in which Webb admitted to drinking an alcoholic beverage prior to the crash.
The judge ordered her held without bail, but Webb’s attorney says his client deserves bail, despite the serious charges against her.
“At this point, I don’t see the need to hold this young lady, 22 years old, until the case comes to trial. And that’s if there is a trial. We’re talking about one year, two years, maybe three years down the line and to hold her without bail almost obliterates the notion of the presumption of innocence,” Walker said.
Police say they’re looking into posts the suspect allegedly made on social media in the moments leading up to the crash.
No word yet on when the funerals will be for the fallen troopers.

Driver doing donuts in NYC runs over bystander

The driver who ran over an onlooker while doing donuts at an illegal event in Soho was ordered held on $10,000 bail at his arraignment Thursday, as prosecutors warned the victim may not survive.
Tyler Greer, 22, also had his driver’s license revoked by Judge Michael Gaffey during his hearing in Manhattan Criminal Court, which was attended by his mom and other relatives and friends.
Authorities say the baby-faced speed fiend was spinning his car in circles just after 12 a.m. Saturday at a lot on Vandam and Greenwich streets while surrounded by a crowd of people.
One of the spectators, identified as 23-year-old Christopher Brito, tripped while filming the show and was run over by Greer, prosecutors said.
Greer then allegedly drove off, leaving the victim in the street. Brito was hospitalized and nearly died, having suffered several injuries including a skull fracture, a punctured lung and a lacerated spleen.

The hit-and-run driver turned himself in to police on Wednesday, and was charged with assault, leaving the scene of an accident and reckless driving.
Prosecutors said Greer, who had on yellow Crocs, blue jeans and a black jacket at his arraignment, would likely face additional charges if the victim does not recover.
Mom Jacqueline Brito, 48, previously told The Post her son needed to have surgery on two broken hips, his forehead and his nose.

“It’s horrible,” she said. “His forehead is broken and his nose is broken, too.”
Her son remains in critical condition and still needs additional surgeries.
Greer’s defense attorney Nicholas Ramcharitar told the court that what happened was a “terrible terrible tragedy and accident.”
He said Greer tried to remain on the scene after the crash, but “didn’t know how to handle the situation properly,” as he was surrounded by over 1,000 bystanders and “pushed in all directions.”

“These car events happen constantly,” Ramcharitar told the court, adding there may even be one of the illegal car shows taking place that night.
Prosecutors accused Greer of trying to skirt justice by getting rid of the car and his social media. But Ramcharitar said the vehicle will be presented for evidence and that his client only deleted his accounts because of backlash.
Greer was remanded into custody after the hearing on a warrant out related to a probation violation out of New Jersey, where he lives with his mom, a nurse, who did not comment after the hearing.
His next court date in Manhattan is set for Monday.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A driver has been charged with homicide by vehicle while DUI in a crash that claimed the life of a 3-year-old child in Philadelphia’s Brewerytown neighborhood. The Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office says 62-year-old Timothy Robinson is facing involuntary manslaughter, homicide by vehicle and related charges.
Police: Driver Charged With DUI In Crash That Killed 3-Year-Old In Brewerytown
The crash happened around 11 a.m. Monday at 30th Street and Girard Avenue.
Police say a 2020 black Nissan Rogue SUV crashed into a Volkswagen multiple times, then jumped the curb and flipped over on the sidewalk.
It came down on top of a 27-year-old woman and a 3-year-old.
The woman was able to free herself and is in stable condition.
“My heart is broken for this child, and for the family that now grieves such a terrible loss. Intoxicated driving is never OK, and this tragedy is why,” District Attorney Larry Krasner said. “My office will work to hold Mr. Robinson accountable, but I also want to re-commit to working with our public safety partners in the city to confront traffic violence for the public safety threat that it is. Safe sidewalks and streets for all should be considered baseline amenities in all Philadelphia communities.”

Terrell Lee Charged With DUI After Philadelphia Police Officer Struck In Tacony Hit-And-Run, Authorities Say

By CBS3 StaffMarch 31, 2022 at 6:07 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A Philadelphia police officer was hit by a suspected drunk driver who sped away Wednesday night in Philadelphia’s Tacony section. Police say that female officer was launched 10 feet into the air.

They say the officer is lucky to be alive.
Prosecutors on Thursday charged Terrell Lee with aggravated assault, DUI, and other offenses. Prosecutors say Lee was also driving with a suspended license.
There is still glass and car parts littered all over the street on the 6700 block of Torresdale Avenue.
Police say Lee swerved across this median from the northbound lane into the southbound lane when he struck that officer from behind.
“Officer was hit north on Torresdale. The vehicle is fleeing the scene who hit her,” an officer said on the 911 call asking for help.
It all happened around 8 p.m. when the officer was conducting a traffic stop. Police say the officer, who works in the 15th District, was walking back to her vehicle when she was hit from behind and thrown 10 feet into the air.

Nelson Rodrigues lives on the street. He came outside to why officers were on his street.
“She was laying on the street and residents came and helped her out and when the cruiser arrived, they sat her up and had her sitting up with her back up against the bumper but she didn’t look too good,” Rodrigues said.
The driver fled the scene and was found less than three miles away on Cottman Avenue.
“The officers immediately grabbed him and took him into custody. He’s 42 years old. He appears to be intoxicated so officers transported him to our police headquarters in the new building at Broad and Callowhill where this 42-year-old suspect will get a breathalyzer, but officers who made the apprehension saw him get out of this vehicle after almost striking their vehicle at Cottman and Torresdale said this individual was clearly intoxicated,” Philadelphia Police Chief Insp. Scott Small said.
Police have not yet said what charges the suspect faces.
The officer has injuries to her head and body and is in stable condition at Jefferson-Torresdale Hospital. She has been with the department for 13 years and is 44 years old.
“By the grace of God she’s doing OK, but it’s terrible what’s going on out here. If it isn’t one thing, it’s another,” Rodrigues said.

Suspect Accused Of Killing 3 People, Including 2 Pennsylvania State Troopers, Set To Appear In Court

By CBS3 StaffJune 22, 2022 at 7:26 am

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — On Wednesday, the woman accused of killing three people, including two Pennsylvania State Troopers on Interstate 95 is set to appear in court.
Pennsylvania State Police say 21-year-old Jayana Webb was speeding while drunk when she hit Troopers Martin Mack and Branden Sisca as they assisted a man walking along the highway on the morning of March 21.
The troopers were helping the man into the back of their cruiser when they were all struck.
Jayana Webb is facing multiple charges, including third-degree murder.

Third-Degree Murder Charge Dropped Against Jayana Webb, Accused Of Killing 2 Pennsylvania State Troopers, Man In Crash

By Madeleine WrightJune 22, 2022 at 6:04 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A third-degree murder charge has been dropped against Jayana Webb, the woman accused of striking and killing two Pennsylvania state troopers and a man who the troopers were trying to help. A judge dropped the charge at Webb’s preliminary hearing Wednesday.
Webb’s defense attorney says the commonwealth failed to prove his client acted with malice. But Webb is still charged with manslaughter, homicide by vehicle and DUI.
The Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office has already refiled third-degree murder charges against Webb. A hearing will have to be held to determine if that charge will be reinstated.
The state laid out its case against Webb in a preliminary hearing that lasted more than five hours at the Criminal Justice Center.
Dozens of Pennsylvania State police troopers filed into court Wednesday morning for the much-anticipated preliminary hearing.
Webb is charged in the crash on I-95 South near the stadium complex on March 21 that killed Pennsylvania State Troopers Martin Mack, Branden Sisca and a pedestrian, Reyes Rivera Oliveras.
The assistant DA called nine witnesses to the stand, including a toxicologist who testified that Webb’s blood alcohol content was 0.211, more than twice the legal limit, and that marijuana was found in her system.
Another key witness was a trooper who testified that Sisca and Mack, in a tragic twist, had pulled Webb over that fateful day for driving 113 miles per hour, but the two quickly left to respond to another emergency, a pedestrian walking on the highway.
A crash reconstruction expert testified that Webb was driving at 78 miles per hour when her Chevy Captiva slammed into the three men, launching them over the concrete barrier separating the north and southbound lanes.
Webb broke down in tears when the prosecutor played surveillance video from Lincoln Financial Field showing the deadly crash. Her lawyer says she apologizes for her actions.
“She’s told me she’s sorry on a number of occasions because again, this was an accident. She would never want to kill anybody and you heard in there, she doesn’t have a criminal record. She’s never been violent in her life. In fact, she was a superstar track runner in high school. She’s a good girl. It’s just, there’s some issues with some drinking,” defense attorney Michael Walker said.
The families of Webb and the two troopers killed were in court Wednesday but declined to speak on camera.
The judge also granted Webb $600,000 bail. She was previously being held without bail.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A judge has reinstated third-degree murder charges against Jayana Webb, the woman accused of striking and killing two Pennsylvania state troopers and a man who the troopers were trying to help on Interstate 95 earlier this year. The charges were dropped in June after Webb's defense attorney said the commonwealth failed to prove his client acted with malice.

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner released a statement following the reinstatement of the third-degree murder charges. Krasner believes the charges were "always appropriate."

The charge of 3rd-degree murder was always appropriate for this defendant, whose actions we allege led to the violent deaths of Pennsylvania State Troopers Martin F. Mack, III and Branden T. Sisca, and the man they were attempting to help, Reyes Rivera Oliveras. Assistant District Attorney Jessica Chung is a skilled, diligent, and capable prosecutor who will help deliver accountability for these tragic crimes and some measure of justice for three grieving families.
Webb is charged with three counts of third-degree murder, manslaughter, homicide by vehicle and DUI in the March 21 crash South near the stadium complex that killed Pennsylvania State Troopers Martin Mack and Branden Sisca and a pedestrian, Reyes Rivera Oliveras.

On Wednesday, the judge denied the assistant district attorney's request to increase bail. Instead, the judge lifted the stay on Webb's $600,000 bail and she can get out of jail if she posts 10%.

Eyewitness News spoke with Webb's attorney, who says his client is "devastated."
