KEARNEY, Neb. — Two Colorado men were arrested after they allegedly led police on a pursuit and later fled into cornfields:D on Saturday.

According to the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP), a trooper attempted to pull over a Jeep Liberty for speeding around 6:20 p.m. The vehicle was going west on Interstate 80 near Grand Island. NSP said the vehicle fled. At mile marker 305, the Liberty exited, ran through a stop sign and hit a pole on the westbound on-ramp before it went back on I-80 going west.

NSP said that the driver continued to drive recklessly and sped over 100 miles per hour.

At that point, NSP said that two men in the vehicle fled into a cornfield on foot. The NSP Aviation Support Division and Police Service Dog Division helped search for the suspects. Around three hours later, the men were found trying to hide in separate spots in fields. The two men were then arrested and taken to the Buffalo County Jail.

The driver, Christopher Cornell, 26, of Brighton, Colo., and passenger, Deoviyon Overstreet, 21, of Aurora, Colo., were arrested for possession of marijuana – between one ounce and one pound, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, violation of a protection order, possession of a firearm during a drug violation, failure to obey a lawful order and obstructing a peace officer. In addition to these charges, Cornell will also face the following charges from the pursuit: felony flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, driving during revocation, leaving the scene of an accident and numerous traffic violations.

Philadelphia Man Hit On I-676 After Police Chase In Camden Identified As Rashad Muse, Video Released
March 6, 2021 at 2:29 pm

CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) – Authorities in New Jersey have released the name of a Philadelphia man struck and killed after running onto an interstate after fleeing from Camden police during a traffic stop a month ago. The New Jersey attorney general’s office on Friday said Rashad Muse, 26, of Philadelphia was the man struck Feb. 6 on Interstate 676.

State authorities also released video from police body cameras and a street camera that captured portions of the chase.

Authorities have said that patrol officers spotted a sedan speeding in Camden and tried to stop it, but the vehicle fled. The driver crashed in an underpass, ran up an embankment onto I-676, was struck by several civilian vehicles and was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

The attorney general’s office said investigators met with Muse’s relatives before releasing video recordings from seven police body cameras and a street camera. A state investigation is required whenever a person dies during an encounter with law enforcement.

State officials said that the fleeing vehicle was found after it pulled into a snowy lot, and officers got out of their vehicles and approached, shouting at the driver to get out. Instead, they said, it kept going, striking other multiple other vehicles, including a police vehicle, and drove “very close” to officers on foot before speeding away.

The sedan then crashed into an I-676 underpass support, and the driver emerged and ran, climbing over a fence and running up an embankment onto the highway. There, he was struck by civilian vehicles, and when officers arrived “it was evident that no medical aid could help Mr. Muse,” the attorney general’s office said.

Officers who entered the highway before it could be closed “were up there to see what they could do to help,” Rick Kunkel, president of Camden County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 218, told The (Cherry Hill) Courier Post.

“We’re glad that the body-worn camera footage was released,” he said. “I think it shows that the officers acted properly. … They attempted to de-escalate that situation and get him out of the vehicle.”

A police department spokesman declined comment on the case, which remains under investigation.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Philadelphia Police have identified the suspect wanted in a hit-and-run that left a 60-year-old man dead in North Philadelphia. Police on Saturday night said the suspect is 44-year-old Edward Prince of Olney. Police say Prince is also known as Jamil Smith.

Price is wanted for homicide by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter, and other charges.

Police say Roberto Oquendo Velez was hit with such force that he was thrown from his shoes and dragged nearly 300 feet on the 3300 block of North 2nd Street just after 11 p.m. on Wednesday night.

According to police, Oquendo was crossing the street at 2nd and Ontario Streets when he was struck by a dark blue 2001 to 2005 GMC Envoy or Yukon they now say was driven by Prince.

The vehicle fled the scene south on 2nd Street from Ontario Street and tracked as far south as Girard Avenue, investigators say. The vehicle has a broken right headlight and fender damage.

Police found Oquendo Velez badly injured in the street shortly after arriving on the scene Wednesday night. He was eventually pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the suspect was speeding and hit Oquendo hard, despite speed humps on the road, and then left the scene.

“He was struck so hard his shoes flew off,” Philadelphia Police Capt. Mark Overwise said.

The victim’s family tells investigators that he lived just one block away from where the crash happened, and he lived there for 35 years.

“He was the nicest person you could possibly meet,” Brunilda Oquendo, the victim’s sister, said. “He didn’t deserve to die the way he died.”

Oquendo’s sister fears her brother didn’t hear the car or a possible horn blaring as it barreled toward him.

“He was born deaf. He might hear like if you bounce on a wood floor but no, he didn’t hear a horn like that,” she said.

Anyone with information about Prince’s whereabouts is being asked to call 911 or 215-686-8477.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A suspect wanted in connection to a deadly hit-and-run crash is now facing charges. Investigators say the victim was dragged to his death.

No comment from Edward Prince, also known as Jamil Smith, as he turned himself in to police Wednesday afternoon.

The 44-year-old has been wanted for homicide by vehicle and involuntary manslaughter for the hit-and-run that killed a 60-year-old man.

The crash happened on March 3 at 2nd and Ontario Streets just after 11:00 that night.

The victim, Roberto Velez, was crossing 2nd Street when he was struck by a dark-colored SUV. The impact was so devastating the victim was dragged 300 feet.

The beloved man was deaf and mute and well-liked in the community.

Police used surveillance video to help track the striking vehicle.

While Prince remained silent on his way into the accident investigations division, his attorney had this to say about the tragic case.

“My thoughts are this is a tragedy for all people involved — obviously for the victim, the victim’s family, the community. It’s a tragedy too for my client. He’s 44 years of age, he learned that he was wanted in this case and we’ve come in,” attorney Paul Mallis said.

A bail hearing for Prince will likely be held Thursday

O.C. man with 3 intoxicated driving convictions charged with DUI, murder in hit-and-run death of 74-year-old man

Updated: Apr 14, 2021 / 04:50 PM PDT

Orange County prosecutors on Tuesday announced charges against a Costa Mesa man suspected of fatally hitting a 74-year-old man while driving under the influence last weekend.

Stewart Waithanji, 28, has been charged with one felony count of murder, one felony count of driving under the influence, one felony count of driving under the influence with a blood alcohol content of .08 percent or higher, and two misdemeanor counts of hit and run, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release.

Around 4 p.m. April 10, police were called to the scene of a hit-and-run on Newport Boulevard, south of 17th Street, with witnesses attempting to stop the drive from leaving.

Responding officers found an injured 74-year-old man in the street. Paramedics treated the man before taking him to a local hospital, where he died, officials said.

The victim was identified as Richard Frost of Newport Beach, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Witness reported to authorities that after the victim was struck, he attempted to the stop the driver of the silver Chevy Malibu from leaving the scene. But the driver, later identified as Waithanji, allegedly continued driving.

Waithanji was arrested by police a short time later in the parking lot of a nearby Los Alamitos bar.

There was a female passenger in the car with Waithanji at the time of the incident, and she too was arrested, according to the L.A. Times, on suspicion of being an accessory to a crime. The DA’s office has not filed charges against her yet.

Waithanji has three prior convictions for driving under the influence in Iowa, according to the DA’s office. He was also wanted on two other DUI warrants: one for a September 2019 case and another for an October 2019 incident. He has also been charged in a hit-and-run that occurred shortly before last weekend’s collision, officials said.

A Long Island woman charged in the drunk-driving death of an NYPD officer in Queens early Tuesday had a blood-alcohol level twice the legal limit, sources told The Post.

Sources said Jessica Beauvais, 32, was combative with police when she was nabbed on vehicular manslaughter, driving while intoxicated and other charges after slamming into highway officer Anastasios Tsakos, 43, as he directed traffic on the Long Island Expressway around 2 a.m.

Beauvais, who fled the scene and was arrested about a mile away, blew a BAC of 0.15 — nearly twice the legal limit of 0.08, according to high-ranking law enforcement sources.

She allegedly admitted to police that she was drinking vodka in Brooklyn earlier that night, sources added.

Beauvais was “combative” with cops at the scene, sources said.

Hours before the wreck, the 32-year-old posted a lengthy video on Facebook as part of a podcast she hosts.

“I don’t like barriers,” Beauvais, of Hempstead, says on the video posted Monday night.

“That’s why I don’t like work. And I don’t like rules.”

Beauvais also railed against cops during the nearly two-hour podcast, which was largely based on the conviction of ex-Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin last week in the death of George Floyd.

“We’re not scared of the police,” she said. “Like these songs, f–k the police. We want you to know we don’t give a f–k about you, your mama, your children, your wife. You’re nothing. You’re nothing to us — bug spray, roaches, infestation.”

“Y’all like roaches,” she said. “Nobody gives a f–k about you. You’re just annoying to look at. Good, bad, or indifferent. Being honest.”

Beauvais has at least five prior traffic violations in New York and North Carolina dating back to 2011, including for using an electronic device while driving and driving without a registration, law enforcement sources told The Post.

She is due to be arraigned in Queens criminal court later Tuesday.

NYPD looking for deranged driver who ran over school bus driver
By Dean Balsamini

VEHICULAR-ASSAULT-029.jpg

An unhinged motorist intentionally mowed down a 44-year-old school bus driver in Brooklyn and the horrific episode was captured on video, police said Saturday.

The 17-second clip shows the moments just before the disturbing incident Friday at around 5:15 p.m. at Hinsdale Street and Linden Boulevard in East New York – and the horrific conclusion.

The man is seen stomping out of a gray Subaru and deliberately marching toward the front of a yellow school bus stopped at a light.

It wasn’t immediately clear from the footage if the man damaged the bus.

But the female bus driver then gets out and begins to either record or take a photograph of the Subaru.

The man storms back to his car and once inside floors the gas pedal — running over the woman, leaving her in the middle of the street as he drives off south on Hinsdale, authorities said.

“The guy goes up to the school bus. Looks like he broke glass. She goes to take a picture and he runs her over,” an NYPD spokesman said Saturday.

The suspect and victim do not know each other, said the spokesman who declined to speculate whether the suspect lost it because the bus had not been moving fast enough for his liking.

The injured woman “sustained trauma throughout her body” and is listed in critical, but stable condition at Brookdale Hospital, police said.

The suspect was described as about 5-foot-7, weighs 155 pounds and has a thin build. He was last seen wearing a light colored jacket, a green baseball cap, blue jeans and sneakers, police said. Cops said he was driving a gray Subaru CTK, New York license plate JKE-6813.

Anyone with information in regard to this incident is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).

Woman indicted for drunken crash that killed NYPD cop
By Rebecca Rosenberg

Jessica Beauvais has been indicted on 13 counts.

The Long Island woman who allegedly fatally hit an NYPD cop with her car in Queens — on her way back from drunkenly recording a podcast filled with anti-police rants — has been indicted on 13 counts, authorities announced Monday.

Jessica Beauvais, 32, faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted of the charges — which include aggravated manslaughter, aggravated criminally negligent homicide and operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol — for the April 27 death of Highway Officer Anastasios Tsakos.

Beauvais is accused of barreling down the Long Island Expressway high on drugs and with a blood alcohol level of .15 — twice the legal limit — when she struck Tsakos with her Volkswagen Passat, officials said.

Tsakos, 43, was on the scene of an earlier fatal car crash when Beauvais hit him so hard that he flew 40 feet into the air before landing on a patch of grass, according to Queens DA Melinda Katz.

Beauvais allegedly sped off with a caved-in windshield, a traffic cone wedged under the front of her car and cops in hot pursuit.

After exiting the freeway, the Hempstead woman jumped a curb then threw her car in reverse — ramming into the police cruiser behind her in an attempt to flee, court papers charge.

Beauvais, who was driving with a suspended license, allegedly admitted to investigators that she had downed vodka as she recorded podcast filled with anti-police messages in the hours before the tragic collision.

Tsakos, who was posthumously promoted to detective, is survived by his wife and young children, ages 3 and 6.

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) - Nearly a week after a hit-and-run crash in a west Phoenix neighborhood left a father in a coma, police said they've made an arrest. Vera Mims, 48, was taken into custody and booked into jail on Friday.

Back on May 28, David Espinoza and his 5-year-old son Aiden were walking to the park on Wood Street, which is just north of Broadway, when Mims hit David with her Honda Civic around 24th Street, police said. She then drove off. Before the impact, David pushed his son out of the way so he wasn't hurt. David was rushed to the hospital and still in a coma, as of Friday evening. He has broken ankles and a fractured skull.
