Charles Love Set To Enter Guilty Pleas In Tennessee Waltz Case

Hamilton County School Board member Charles Love is set to enter guilty pleas in the Tennessee Waltz FBI sting.

Lee Davis, one of his attorneys, said depending upon the Federal Court in Memphis, Love could enter the guilty pleas as early as next Thursday.

In papers mailed to attorneys in the case and filed in Federal Court in Memphis, Love says he will plead guilty on charges of conspiracy to bribe Sen. Ward Crutchfield of Chattanooga and Rep. Chris Newton of Cleveland.

The motion asks that both cases be consolidated under Judge Daniel Breen, so he can hea

r the pleas and set the sentence.

The move apparently means that Love may wind up testifying for
the government against the two prominent area legislators.

Attorney Davis said, "We anticipate he will be truthful and cooperative."

Love has not yet given up his seat on the School Board. Attorney Davis said he understands he would not be required to until the judgment on the guilty plea is final - at the sentencing.

Love had been charged in the Tennessee Waltz sting as being a "bagman" who delivered money to legislators for their agreement to support certain bills.

The other alleged bagman, Barry Myers, an associate of various Memphis politicians, entered a guilty plea last week in Memphis.

Love earlier pleaded not guilty, but the new papers say he plans to change that plea.

Myers was the first of seven persons indicted in the FBI sting to plead guilty.

Myers was accused
of
transferring cash to Sen. Kathryn Bowers and former Sen. Roscoe Dixon, Memphis Democrats who are charged in the case.

Love worked with Crutchfield and
Newton, officials said.

The Love motions were sent to attorneys for Crutchfield and Newton.

They ask that the two Love cases be consolidated and heard by Judge Breen. One of the cases was assigned to another federal judge in Memphis.

Adams, Skillern Say Love Should Exit School Board

County Commissioners Curtis Adams and Fred Skillern said Charles Love should resign from the County School Board now that he plans to plead guilty in the Tennessee Waltz FBI sting.

"He ought to leave now and let us get on with finding a good person to take his place," said Commissioner Adams, who is chairman of the commission's education committee.

Chairman Skillern said, "He should resign. I believe that anyone who is indicted should not take part in any votes involving contracts until their case is cleared up."

County school officials said Thursday afternoon that Love remains on the school board, representing District 5.

Prior to his being charged as a "bagman" taking money to legislators in exchange fo
r their support for bills, Love had also been mentioned as a likely candidate for the County Commission District 5 seat in next year's election.

County Attorney Rheubin Taylor said that under state law, officials, including school board members who violate state law, shall forfeit their office or face outster.

He said the outster could be brought by the district attorney or the county attorney.

It would be up to the County Commission to name a replacement for Love on the school board.

Greg Beck, the commissioner from District 5, said he expects to hold interviews along with some district leaders of potential candidates.

He said he then would take his choice back to the other commissioners.

Commissioner Adams said the full commission would lean heavily on the recommendation from Commissioner Beck.

Commissioner B
eck
said, "I would expect that commissioners would lean toward my choice for the position."

Love is set to plead guilty in the case as early as ne
xt Thursday.

He said in a letter to School Board Chairman Chip Baker: "Please accept this letter as my resignation from the Hamilton County Board of Education effective immediately. I take very seriously my responsibility to the children of Hamilton County as an elected official. Unfortunately, I can no longer enjoy this privilege given my recent plea in Federal Court. I believe that it is in everyone's best interest for me to step down so that a successor can be named. Best of luck and thank you for the opportunity."
