There now is word of negotiations to remove embattled Tennessee State University president Dr. James Hefner. News 2 has learned that talks are taking place that would lead to Hefner's retirement. The long-time president has been under fire since a critical audit report was released this spring.

Several sources on and off Tennessee's Capitol Hill say that a deal i
essentially in place that would lead to Dr. Hefner's retirement. The sources say that an announcement is expected within the week. Late this afternoon, the Tennessee Board of Regents announced that Dr.

He
ner will accept an executive vice-president to help him run day-to-day operations at TSU.

Board
of Regents chancellor Charles Manning told News 2 that he could not comment on Hefner's future, but did say that it's a "complicated issue". Dr. Hefner's attorney Tom Lee told News 2 that he could not comment about a retirement deal.

When Dr. Hefner presided over TSU's commencement ceremony this weekend, he gave no indication of secret negotiations that may lead to his retirement.

A state audit criticized TSU's president earlier this year for accepting free Super Bowl tickets from a school vendor, and raised questions about his financial handling of a TSU scholarship account. Earlier this month Dr. Hefner said that he would not accept the Board of Regents
recommendation for a new TSU executive vice-president to assist him in day-to-day operations of the university.
