SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGO) -- The surge in coronavirus cases is proving very challenging for frontline healthcare workers-- and especially for one Northern California emergency room doctor.

Bay Area native and part-time doctor at UCSF, Dr. Taylor Nichols, spoke with ABC News about his recent encounter with a COVID-19 patient, adorned with swastika and Nazi tattoos on his chest.

Dr. Nichols, who is Jewish, explains how he and his team, a Black nurse and an Asian respiratory therapist at a Sacramento-area hospital, worked to treat the man just like they would any other coronavirus patient.

"Being Jewish, seeing that symbol of hate, knowing that that same compassion may not otherwise have been extended if the roles were reversed really made me double down and look into myself and extend that compassion towards him," said Dr. Nichols, who wrote on Twitter, "We all knew what he thought of us. How he valued our lives. Yet here we were, working seamlessly as a team to make sure we gave him the best chance to survive that we could."

I run through the meds and plan with the nurse and RT. I pause. I see the SS tattoo and think about what he might think about having Jewish physician taking care of him now, or how much he would have cared about my life if the roles were reversed. 16/
— Taylor Nichols, MD (@tnicholsmd) November 30, 2020

Dr. Nichols described the incident in 17 tweets on Twitter that have garnered thousands of views.

One of them said, "The swastika stood out boldly on his chest. SS tattoos and other insignia that had previously been covered by his shirt were now obvious to the room."

Dr. Nichols says as they were working to save the man he said, "Don't let me die, doc."

He says he's encountered patients like this before, "the swastikas, the racists," and always feels "a bit shaken."

Anti-Semitic images, slurs and songs were posted on the website of a Jewish school in Long Island on Monday in an apparent hack, video shows.

The North Shore Hebrew Academy High School’s homepage was splattered with a Swastika and clip of marching Nazi SS guards, according to the footage posted on Twitter. :p

More Nazi imagery was also posted on the “About Us” page, which was hacked to read “The k–e race.”

“North Shore Hebrew Death Camp,” another page read.

The non-profit foundation StopAntisemitism.org — which shared the video on Twitter –said that the personal information of students and teachers at the Great Neck school were also leaked in the cyber-breach.

“A Hebrew Academy in Great Neck (Long Island), NY is being hacked!,” the post read.

“Nazi songs, imagery, messages continue to be posted. They have also leaked students’ and teachers’ addresses and credit card information.”

A picture of Adolf Hitler was also posted on a page that called the school the “North Shore Concentration Camp.” :D

Another page included details of a “field trip” to Auschwitz, that listed the application deadline as “January 1945” and said students would have to “walk into an SS office and declare themselves as Jews.” :)

By late Monday afternoon, the school’s site read: “Under construction. Please check back soon.”

Headmaster Daniel Vitow told The Post that “We are aware of the situation and are actively working with law enforcement.”

Nassau County Police confirmed they are investigating the incident but didn’t immediately have additional information.

Liora Rez, the director of StopAntisemitism.org, said the organization was alerted about the breach shortly after 4 p.m. and that it lasted a few hours.

“We are horrified that hackers have targeted a Jewish school and exposed children to horrific Nazi imagery and messages,” Rez said.

“Many of these teens are descendants of Holocaust survivors and generational trauma is often triggered when events like these occur.” :pity:

A vandal spray-painted a swastika and a racist message on an NYU building earlier this month, cops said.

The suspect targeted the university’s Tisch Hall on 40 West 4th St. around 11:15 a.m. Feb. 6, leaving the disturbing symbol and anti-black language on the side of the building, police said.

Police did not have the exact wording of the hateful message.

The vandal took off, heading north on Greene Street, cops said.

Police released a photo of him late Wednesday, describing him as between 5-foot-8 and 5-foot-10.

He was last seen wearing a dark colored snorkel jacket, dark blue jeans, black sneakers and a newsboy cap.

A man who was filmed drawing a swastika in the snow outside a Midtown Manhattan synagogue in February was nabbed Thursday after returning to redraw the Nazi symbol in chalk, cops said.

Manuel Barrera, 50, was seen on security camera at about 9 a.m. scribbling the anti-Semitic symbol — along with a Pentagram and “666” — on the sidewalk outside the Temple Emanu-El at 840 Fifth Ave.

A Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Elmhurst, Queens was desecrated with swastikas, profane graffiti and the term “baby killers.”

New York City Councilman Robert Holden shared images of the vandalism on Twitter Wednesday, and vowed to work with police to make an arrest.

“I am deeply disgusted by this cowardly act of vandalism at the Queens Vietnam Veterans Memorial,” the Democrat wrote.

“I am working… to make sure the perpetrator is brought to justice. I offer a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the sick soul who did it.”

The incident was reported to police on a 911 call around 12:45 a.m. Wednesday, and officers responded to complaints of criminal mischief at the site, which is on 79th Street and Grand Avenue in Elmhurst Park, NYPD spokesperson Sergeant Jessica McRorie told The Post.

The vandal scrawled “fallen solvs,” “baby killers” and a Nazi symbol in red on one of the memorial’s semi-circular granite walls, which are inscribed with the names of the 371 soldiers from Queens who died in the conflict, according to the park’s website.

“God sucks d–k” and “baby killers” were written in white around a stone map on the memorial’s floor, and “killers” and another swastika were scrawled in red over the map, photos show.

A third Nazi symbol and “110” was written in red on a boulder.

The memorial was dedicated in 2019, according to the NYC Parks Department.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.

A pair of vandals defaced the Goldman Sachs building in Battery Park City with twisted stickers of the Israeli flag — with a swastika in it — in what cops are now investigating as a possible hate crime, police sources said.

The incident occurred around 10:40 p.m. Thursday at the global Wall Street titan’s headquarters between Vesey and Murray streets, the sources said.

Video surveillance shows a man, about 30 years old, 5-foot-8, 150 pounds with “curly/wavy” hair and a woman scrawling graffiti on the 44-story building, and then running eastbound, the police sources said.

The NYPD Hate Crime Task Force is investigating the vandalism, the sources said.

An NYPD spokesman did not immediately have more information regarding the incident.

Hate symbols graffitied on Martin Luther King Jr. statue in Central Long Beach

mlk-statue-vandalism.jpg

Symbols resembling a swastika and SS bolts that were worn by some Nazi troops during World War II were graffitied onto a statue of Martin Luther King Jr.
:Din Central Long Beach Friday afternoon.

The marks spotted on the likeness of King, the civil rights leader who advocated for human rights until his assassination in 1968, hurt local neighborhood residents such as Mary Simmons.

“It’s just so painful,” Simmons said. “I want to cry every time I think about it.”

Authorities were notified about the hate-motivated symbols on the front of the statue in Martin Luther King Jr. Park on Friday at about 3:18 p.m.

“The incident is being investigated as a possible hate crime and there are currently no suspects nor suspect information available,” Richard Mejia, an LBPD spokesman, said in an email.

Both the swastika and the SS bolts are common white supremacist/neo-Nazi symbols.

Though the graffiti was removed by the Parks and Recreation department, residents captured a photo of the symbols.

Simmons, who is a board member with community-based group AOC7, representing the neighborhood bordered by Anaheim, Orange, Cherry & 7th St., said she and other residents are organizing a peace rally in front of the statue on Saturday from 6 to 7 p.m.

Simmons said the community wanted to speak out against hate-motivated crimes to mirror the civil unrest that took place last summer to protest violence against communities of color.

“Especially right now with all the uprising—and this? We’re not going to take this sitting down,” Simmons said. “We are tired of being silenced.”

In 2019, a plaque at the base of the statue honoring the people who sponsored the monument’s construction was reportedly stolen. It was replaced in February this year.

Pastor Gregory Sanders, who grew up two streets away from the park and remembered when it was originally named 19th Street Park, said he’s never seen this level of hate graffitied onto the statue of King.

Sanders said that it was odd to see something like that happen at Martin Luther King Jr. Park, adding that the park is a “hallowed community that has traditionally been safe from extreme hate.”

Sanders said the symbols triggered memories of the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis and he felt sympathy for members of the Jewish community.

Sanders is a member of the Long Beach Ministers Alliance and is planning to attend the peace rally Saturday.

“For me personally, It’s a reminder that not only what we have to do, but we have not advanced far in the work that has been done,” Sanders said. “It was a death for my false sense of progress.”

Beachgoers in Odessa, Ukraine were bewildered by a woman showing off her tattoos of Adolf Hitler and a swastika.
Bad taste and tattoos last forever.
A woman horrified beachgoers at the Black Sea resort of Odessa, Ukraine, last week when she stripped off to reveal an Adolf Hitler tattoo on her hand and a large swastika inked on her right butt cheek.
”Like everyone else, my jaw dropped when I saw the girl’s choice of inks,” an onlooker told the Star.
The woman soon left the strand after other beachgoers made it clear the tattoos were unacceptable and expressed their disapproval. But the tats aren’t just in bad taste — they are illegal.
According to the Star, “the propaganda of Nazism and Nazi symbols is prohibited and regarded as a criminal offense that carries a maximum punishment of five years in prison in Ukraine.”

2 former California police officers charged with vandalism for swastika spray-painted on a car seat

(JTA) — The Los Angeles County District Attorney charged two former police officers with vandalism for allegedly spray-painting a swastika on the back seat of an impounded car.
The investigation into the vandalism also uncovered messages exchanged between the two former officers in Torrance, a city in Los Angeles County, and at least another 13 officers that included racist, homophobic and antisemitic statements, CBS2, the local CBS affiliate, reported last week. The 13 other officers were placed on leave.
Torrance officers responding to a report of mail theft on Jan. 27, 2020, impounded a car they believed to be implicated in the alleged crime. When the owner retrieved the car he found a happy face spray-painted on the front seat and a swastika spray-painted on the back seat.
The DA is still considering whether the charges rise to the level of a hate crime.

Herschel Walker cancels campaign fundraiser over swastika of syringes

Georgia Republican US Senate hopeful Herschel Walker called off a Texas fundraiser Wednesday after an event organizer displayed a group of syringes arranged to form a swastika in her Twitter profile picture to protest vaccine mandates.
The fundraiser had been scheduled to take place Saturday at the suburban Dallas home of movie producer Bettina Sofia Viviano-Langlais.
“Herschel is a strong friend of Israel and the Jewish community and opposes hatred and bigotry of all forms,” campaign spokesperson Mallory Blount said. “Despite the fact that the apparent intent behind the graphic was to condemn government vaccine mandates, the symbol used is very offensive and does not reflect the values of Herschel Walker or his campaign.”
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, which first noted the image, reported that the Walker campaign initially described it as “clearly an anti-mandatory vaccination graphic.”

After the Journal-Constitution published its story, Viviano-Langlais’ profile picture was changed to a sign reading “God Bless Texas.”
“Herschel Walker defended a swastika,” Democratic Party of Georgia spokesman Dan Gotttlieb said in a statement, “and canceling a fundraiser does not change the fact that he failed to condemn a hateful, anti-Semitic symbol.”

The syringe swastika image has made appearances at protests against vaccine mandates in other parts of the United States and around the world. Earlier this year, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) apologized after she compared mask and vaccine mandates to anti-Jewish laws enforced by Nazi Germany during the Holocaust.
“Those linking the atrocities committed by the Nazis to modern day public health policies must retract their shameless comparisons, take responsibility, and cease their exploitation of Jewish suffering as a political tactic,” Allison Padilla-Goodman, vice president of the southern division of the Anti-Defamation League, said in a statement. “We’re glad to see the fundraiser was canceled, and the behaviors of the host were denounced as offensive.”
A spokesperson for Walker said that the profile picture is very offensive and does not reflect the values of Herschel Walker or his campaign.A spokesperson for Walker said the profile picture is “very offensive and does not reflect the values of Herschel Walker or his campaign.”AP Photo/Ben Gray
The fundraiser for Walker, who is hoping to challenge Democrat Raphael Warnock in next year’s general election, required a $500 donation to get in and $5,800 for a VIP private reception. The Walker campaign said Monday it had raised $3.7 million in the third quarter of this year.
Walker, a Heisman Trophy winner for the University of Georgia Bulldogs, has been endorsed by former President Donald Trump — who encouraged him to get into the race earlier this year. Walker is facing three other Republicans in the primary, including Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black.

At least two protesters displayed Nazi symbols during an anti-vaccine protest outside a Jewish lawmaker’s office in the Bronx on Sunday.
One woman held a poster that included the image of a swastika and a man wore a yellow Star of David affixed to his jacket during the protest outside the Kingsbridge office of Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz, according to photos provided by the legislator.
Dinowitz blasted the symbols as “repugnant and offensive” in a statement posted to Twitter.
“People are perfectly free to express their opinion on vaccines or any issue, but to openly display Nazi symbols outside the office of a Jewish legislator is despicable,” he said.
The protesters rallied against a state bill sponsored by Dinowitz that would require all New York students to be vaccinated in order to attend school.
The rally was reportedly organized by former Westchester County Executive and gubernatorial candidate Rob Astorino.
Astorino said in a tweet Sunday night that he was unaware of the symbols.
“I had no idea until I saw this photo. If I’d seen it I’d have told them to take the sign down. No comparison to those atrocities & yes, I’ve always condemned anti-Semitism,” Astorino wrote.
In an earlier interview with News 12 The Bronx, Astorino explained why he’s not on board with the proposed children vaccine mandate.
“Not only is it too soon — it’s completely unwarranted at this point,” Astorino told the outlet. “The numbers, the data, according to the CDC and worldwide, don’t support it.”
Dinowitz noted how several vaccine mandates are already in place for children attending school — and how mandates are a part of everyday life.

“The fact that children have to get the vaccinations for measles, mumps, rubella, etc. — that’s a mandate. You have to wear your seatbelt in your car. That is a mandate. You’re driving on the right side of the car — mandate,” Dinowitz told News 12.

A series of swastikas were recently found in spots across Lower Manhattan — including the Charging Bull on Wall Street — and now cops are hunting for the vandal.
Surveillance video released by the NYPD shows the suspect allegedly drawing a single swastika on a pillar at the entrance to City Hall, at the corner of Beekman Street and Park Row, around 6:30 p.m. Monday.
The footage shows the poncho-wearing man drawing the anti-Semitic symbol, stepping away and then turning back to take one last glance at what he’d done before walking off.
The next day around 10:10 p.m., the vandal spray-painted a swastika on the Wall Street Bull in front of 25 Broadway, cops said.
Then he took off, heading north on Morris Street.

Wheatland High School Students Seen In Social Media Post With Swastikas On Bodies

WHEATLAND (CBS13) — A picture is circulating on social media of several Wheatland Union High School students with swastikas drawn on their bodies.
The school’s superintendent condemned the behavior in a letter to the district community, confirming they are investigating the photo. The Wheatland Police Department also told CBS13 they are investigating the picture as well.
In the meantime, neighbors are concerned. The post is scaring neighbors.
“Hopefully, if something like that does happen, he stays away from it,” Chris Singleton said of his son, who’s a part of the Wheatland School District. “I don’t know any of the kids or who the parents are. I just say people need to be taught a bit better not to do that kind of thing.”
The Wheatland School District sent a letter to the high school community.
“The District prohibits any discrimination, harassment, intimidation or bullying of any student or staff member,” said Superintendent Nicole Newman.
The letter promises a commitment to education — something members of the community are now questioning.

“I would hope, already in high school, kids know what a swastika is,” said Duane Tubandt, who lives in the area.
The Anti-Defamation League says, in 1920, the Nazi Party adopted the swastika as its symbol, which “permanently converted the swastika into a symbol of hate, anti-Semitism and infamy.”
“The symbol alone is how much hatred there was for a specific class of people,” Tubandt said. “It was devastating how many people were killed in that genocide.”
The California Department of Education says schools are required to teach students about the Holocaust:sleep:
CBS13 did reach out to Wheatland Union High School to ask if they’ve implemented that curriculum. We did not hear back.
There is an internal school investigation being conducted. As for the police investigation, CBS13 was told there is not a criminal violation, but they are continuing to investigate.

ANTI-JEWISH CRIMES SOARING IN THE CITY

By STEFAN C. FRIEDMAN
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

March 5, 2004 -- The number of anti-Semitic incidents in the city jumped during the last three months of 2003, reaching the highest point in three years.

There were 57 anti-Semitic incidents, primarily consisting of spray-painted swastikas and anti-Jewish slurs, from October to December - the highest number of anti-Semitic crimes since 2000, according to a study by Rep. Anthony Weiner to be rel
ased today.

There were 31 incidents in the same period in 2002.

"Like any other crime trend, we need to acknowledge the problem and take steps to stamp it out," Weiner said.
<b

r>Ai
des to Weiner said they did not have an explanation for the rise.

Anti-Defamation League Director Abraham Foxman said it was "attributable to what's going on in the world" - increased anti-Semitism due in large part to the strain in Israeli-Palestinian relations.

The troubling spike began when a suspicious fire on Oct. 4 in Williamsburg left eight Hasidic families homeless and came to a close when a 12-inch gold-colored swastika was discovered spray-painted on a stanchion supporting an elevated subway track in Sheepshead Bay.

Weiner, who obtained his data from the NYPD and state Division of Criminal Justice Services, said anti-Semitic crimes plummeted in January 2004, when only three incidents were reported, but rose again in February.

NYPD Insp
ector Michael Cohen responded that anti-Semitic hate crimes fell overall in 2003, compared to 2002, adding that the police "don't see a long-term trend" developing.

There were
108
anti-Semitic
incidents in 2003 compared to 114 the previous year, NYPD records show.

Foxman said the ADL is "satis
fied with the way the Police Department is handling these incidents."

Mayor Bloomberg weighed in on the report by lambasting Weiner - a possible 2005 mayoral contender - for attempting to make political hay out of a sensitive issue.

"To try to make politics out of bias crimes is ridiculous," the mayor fumed. "Given the source, you should expect that it is one of these statistics that is either made up, [or] maybe [he] picked one day."

Bloomberg added that there have been 10 percent fewer anti-Jewish incidents in the first two months of this year than in 2003.

Weiner responded by saying that Bloomberg needs to "relax"
and that the report is not an attack on his administration.

"Attacking the messenger may be good politics, but it doesn't do justice to a serious issue," Weiner said. <
