Teacher Links Math to Civil Rights

Future educators at Pearl River Community College got a mathematics lesson of their own Wednesday.

Jackson math teacher Bob Moses brought his students to PRCC to demonstrate his nationally known Algebra Project. It aims to teach math skills to disadvantaged youth.

Moses engaged the crowd in a few rounds of "math bingo" and told how efforts to teach disadvantaged students relates to the civil rights movement of the 1960s.

"We're using some of the tools we learned in the civil rights movement to organize," he says. "We're working what we call the demand side of the problem. In the 60s it was getting sharecroppers to demand their rights, and now it&
#39;s getting their grandchildren and great grandchildren students to demand their rights
for a quality education."
