NEW CASTLE, Pa. —
A police officer was taken to the hospital with injuries he suffered during the arrest of a suspect in an assault.

The incident began Sunday when police in New Castle were responding to a domestic dispute in which a woman was punched repeatedly and struck with a cast iron pan.

Police said they identified Marquent Whetzel, 39, as their suspect, and that he took off before police got on scene.

Police said they were able to locate the vehicle Whetzel was in, but when arresting him, he allegedly resisted, tried to headbutt an officer and spit in an officer’s face.

Police eventually took Whetzel into custody and took him to the Lawrence County Jail.

An officer was taken to UPMC Jameson Hospital with shoulder injuries and later released.

Police said, upon searching Whetzel, they found 15 grams of methamphetamine and 15 grams of heroin on him.
