Police ask for help in catching a suspected serial rapist who murdered a homeless woman

By:Dave Balut

St. Petersburg, Florida - Police officers are handing out flyers in parks and shelters downtown. They're looking for people who might have seen a homeless woman, 49-year-old Sara Lynn Wineski, in the days before she was murdered.

Sgt. Mike Puetz, St. Petersburg Police Homicide Unit:
"We're asking them to contact the police department so that we can maybe get a further description of those people she was last seen with."

Wineski's body was found Sunday, May 22nd under a deck behind the Ronald McDon

ald house on 8th Avenue South. The deck overlooks Roser Park, where transients often sleep.

Sgt. Puetz:
"There was signific
ant upper body trauma, and we believe that based on the circumstances we found at the scene, that she was sexually assaulted as well."

Sgt. Mike Puetz says he's concerned Wineski's murder may be connected to another violent sexual assault May 7th near Campbell Park. That's about 2/10ths of a mile from where Wineski's body was found.

The 29-year-old woman, a resident, not a transient, survived the attack. Police say there are disturbing details in both assaults they're not releasing.

Sgt. Puetz:
"We may have on our hands an individual who's a serial rapist. And in this particular one, he may have crossed over the line into a homicide.

Roser Park Resident Barbara Whittingham:
"We are concerned as a neighborhood."

Barbara Whittingham lives in the historic Roser Park district. She hopes
pol
ice will pay more attention to this scenic neighborhood after two violent attacks, including a murder.

Barbara Whittingham:
"We don't know really what it means, whether it's a trend we
certainly hope not but we would like to see a stronger police, and not just police, but city presence here."

If you know anything about Wineski, contact Detective Glen Henry at (727) 551-3058. Wineski came from Sarasota to St. Petersburg in May.

Police have only a general description of the suspect, but say he's a thin black man with a dark complexion in his mid-to-late 20's.
