Suspected serial rapist out-runs police in early morning chase

(PRICHARD, Ala.) Jan. 11 - A suspected serial rapist is still on the run after he manages to out-run police in an early morning foot chase.

The fugitive's family speaks out to NBC-15 News, claiming police have fingered the wrong man.

The foot chase began on Escambia Street in Alabama Village, where Chickasaw police spotted alleged serial rapist Jeffrey Hatfield.

The half-hour pursuit led them into backyards, across a fence and through a wooded area, but police ultimately lost their target in the early morning fog in the Gulf Village neighborhood.

Some Alabama Village residents say police are doing the best they c

an.

They can only do so much, said resident Martin Sumerlin
, and I think they're doing their job, but the important thing is to catch him.

Chickasaw Police say Hatfield is responsible for raping a middle-aged Chickasaw woman in December 2003, as well as three or four other sexual assaults.

But Hatfield's family says the police have fingered the wrong guy.

He hasn't done anything, said Hatfield's cousin, Lacynthia Robinson. My grandmother tried to tell him to turn himself in, but he hasn't done anything. He's a good person."

He's just going to run, said another cousin, Derrick Robinson. He's scared for his life, for his freedom. He just got out of prison."

Hatfield's family contends their cousin was actually behind bars for an unrelated crime when the Chi
ckas
aw rape occurred.

He was locked up in 2003, and (he) didn't get out until the middle of 2004, claimed Lacynthia Robinson.

But thats not the case, according to the Alabama Department of Corrections. Its spokesman tells NBC-15 News that Hatfield was in prison in 2003 for third-degree robbery, but was released in October of that year, two months before the alleged rape in Chickasaw took place.

If you have any information on Jeffrey Hatfield's whereabouts, you're asked to call Chickasaw Police at 251-452-0571.

Suspect arrested in rapes

Prichard police arrested a man Friday night who is believed to have raped at least five women in Mobile County over a period of more than a year, a police spokesman said.

Jeffery Bernard Hatfield, 22, was found about 7:45 p.m. hiding beneath a bed in the rear bedroom of a home in the 100 block of Blount Drive in Prichard's Alabama village, said Harry McGadney, the spokesman.

"We feel good," Prichard Police Chief Sammie Brown said. "One thing for sure, the citizens wanted him off the streets as bad as we did. Our citizens can rest in peace knowing that he is behind bars."

No charges were immediately filed against Hatfield by Prichard police, McGadney said. He was being questioned late Friday by Ch

ickasaw police.

The rape victims have been middle-aged or o
lder women who lived alone and were attacked inside their homes between the hours of 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., authorities have said.

The rapist was armed with knives during the attacks.

Prichard officers arrested Hatfield "on the suspicion that he is responsible" for raping at least five women and turned him over to Chickasaw police, McGadney said.

"We got a tip he was in that area," the spokesman said. "A concerned citizen called and said he was there."

"He did not offer any resistance when officers got him,." McGadney said.

Chickasaw police Sgt. Gerald Thornton said recently that investigators had tied Hatfield to the rapes in the county, with at least one of them occurring in Chickasaw, through witnesses and evidence.

However, investigators so far have not linked Hatfield to a recent rash of rapes in the city of Mobile -- most of which occurred
at a
partment complexes -- but said they have not ruled out the possibility, Thornton said.

Thornton was interviewing Hatfield
late Friday night and could not immediately be reached for comment on the arrest.

Brown said Friday night that law enforcement agencies from Mobile County, the city of Mobile and other municipalities in the county will question Hatfield about unsolved rapes in their jurisdictions.

Though Chickasaw investigators were unsure whether the rapist they seek was acquainted with his victims, they are confident that he stalked the victim in Chickasaw, Thornton has said.

Police have not disclosed many details regarding the rapes or the rape victims, but have said the one in Chickasaw occurred in December 2003.

Brown said Chickasaw has one or more warrants charging Hatfield with rapes in that city even though it has been reported that he is a suspect in only one rape there.

"Other municipalities are looking at this individual very serio
usly, bu
t I don't know if he is a suspect in the Mobile (apartment) rapes," Brown said.

Prichard rape suspect faces murder charge in Pettis case

A man arrested last week on charges of rape and sodomy in a December 2003 case was charged Tuesday with murder and rape involving two separate cases dating back to December 2001.

Jeffery Bernard Hatfield, of Prichard, was charged with murder in connection with the death of Peggy Pettis, 63, whose body was discovered last Dec. 8 in her burning Alabama Village home, said Prichard Police spokesman Harry McGadney.

Hatfield, 22, also was charged Tuesday with first-degree rape and first-degree sodomy of a woman in 2001 in Prichard, McGadney said.

Hatfield was arrested Friday in Prichard "on the suspicion that he is responsible" for raping at least five women in Mobile County

, McGadney said at the time. Hatfield was charged tha
t night with the rape and sodomy of a Chickasaw woman in December 2003, and first-degree robbery and burglary.

In all five cases, the victims were middle-aged or older women who lived alone and were assaulted in their homes by a knife-wielding attacker between the hours of 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., according to Sgt. Gerald Thornton of the Chickasaw Police Department.

Concerning the Pettis homicide, Mobile County District Attorney John Tyson Jr. said that the possibility she also had been raped is still under investigation.

Pettis was found dead in her bedroom, where a small fire damaged a sofa chair and the floor in the residence in the 1100 block of Jackson Avenue, Prichard Fire Marshall Fredrick Chambers said at the time.

Relatives of Pettis had been concerned for the woman, who lived alone with no electricity, because she reported to police the week before the fire that her Social Security check had been taken fro
m he
r home.

Thornton, of the Chickasaw Police Department, said
investigators there are looking into other cases that Hatfield maybe tied to as well. The investigators are confident that he stalked the victim in Chickasaw, Thornton said.

Prichard Police Chief Sammie Brown said that other municpalities were looking at Hatfield. "But I don't know if he is a suspect in the Mobile (apartment) rapes," Brown said Friday.

Cpl. Marcus Young, a Mobile police spokesman, said that Hatfield has not been linked to the rapes of several women in Mobile apartments last year.

It might be something investigators look into though, Young said.

"We're not anywhere close to done with (Hatfield)," Tyson, Jr. said.

Hatfield Bond Hearing

Photo of nigger at above link!

A man accused of raping several women in the Chickasaw area showed up in court on murder charges Wednesday morning.

Prichard Police say Jeffery Hatfield is responsible for killing Peggy Pettis last December. The elderly woman was found dead in her home on Jackson Street in Alabama Village.

At first investigators thought Pettis may have accidentally died in a house fire, but later discovered she had been killed.

Hatfield made his first court appearance Wednesday morning and bond was denied. Chickasaw Police say that Hatfield is a suspect in three other sexual assault cases in the Mobile Count

y area.
