Suspect in courthouse assault of teen arrested

A suspect was arrested Thursday in connection with the sexual assault of a girl at the Cherokee County courthouse by a man who told the victim he was a lawyer.
Charles Douglas Best, 40, was arrested without incident by Clayton and Cherokee law enforcement officers at h
s Jonesboro home, said Cherokee sheriff's Capt. Ron Hunton.
The 17-year-old girl and Best met Sept. 20 at the Cherokee County Justice Center in Canton, where the girl was scheduled for a hearing,
Hunton said. Best told the girl he had obtained a continuance in her case, then led her to a snack vending area, whe
re he assaulted her, authorities said.
"Best is an attorney; however, the status of his license to practice law is not clear," Hunton said.
Best was charged with sexual battery and simple battery, and was released from jail early today on $1,350 bond.
