NEW ORLEANS -- New Orleans police have issued a warrant for the arrest of a 45-year-old Algiers woman accused of defrauding a man out of more than $10,000.

The incident occurred April 7 in the 1800 block of St. Maurice Street.

According to investigators, the 72-year-old victim was confined to a convalescence home following major surgery. The owner/operator of the home, Reejeanie Williams Brooks, of 3513 Timberbluff Lane, told him that his home was going to be foreclosed if the mortg

age was not paid.

In order to prevent the foreclosure, Brooks told the man that she paid his mortgag
e from August 2004 through April 2005 and wanted to be reimbursed.

The victim was taken to his personal bank by an unidentified woman and received a cashier's check payable to the convalescence home. Police said Brooks refused the check because it was not made out to her.

The victim returned to the bank with Brooks and obtained a check in her name for the amount of $10,355.

In late April, the man returned home and was served with a notice of seizure from the mortgage company for nonpayment for the months of August 2004 through April 2005.

Foreclosure procedures are under way by the mortgage company to seize the victim's home.

Police have tried several times to contact Brooks at her workplace, but were unsuccessful.

As a result of the ongoing investigation, a warrant for her arrest was issued.

The investigation is continuing with the po
ssib
ilit
y of more arrests.

Second District Detective Gina Cousin is in charge of the investigation.

Anyone with information on Brooks
' whereabouts is asked to call Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111. Callers may remain anonymous.
