Father charged with murder of five-week-old daughter

A baby girl has died nearly a month after being beaten by her father, Hampton police said. Now, he's charged with murder.
Samaria Xionia Mitchell was five weeks old when she was taken to the hospital on March 19. Doctors called police, suspecting abuse. She was flown to MCV Hospital in Richmond, where doctors said Sunday that she had died.
Police said their investigation showed Mr. Mitchell beat the child, causing brain damage.
Elijah Tyrone Mitchell, 21, of Twin Lakes Circle, was initially charged with
battery. He's a sailor aboard USS Wasp.
Her mother, Mary Lee Mitchell, is charged with child neglec
t. Police say she waited two days to get medical help for her daughter.
