Police find Debra Slough's van, arrest driver

CORPUS CHRISTI - Police in Eagle Pass, Texas arrest a man they said was driving the van of murdered Corpus Christi nurse Debra Slough. Slough was last seen on Sunday afternoon, leaving Christus Spohn Shoreline after her shift ended.

Then on Monday morning her body was found in Bee County, on County Road 322, just west of Beeville. Then Saturday night, a traffic stop turned into a police pursuit. It ended in a car accident in Eagle Pass, near the US/Mexico border.

The vehicle was Slough 's missing 2001 minivan. The driver was taken into custody. Eagle Pass police have identified the suspect as 29-year-old Jesus Francisco Alvarez. He's bei
ng held on numerous charges including evading arrest and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, failure to stop and render aid along with resisting arrest. At this time he has not been charged with Slough 's murder.

The 45-year-old nurse was found up in Beeville, dead of a single gunshot wound to the head. Her family members said they do not recognize the name of Jesus Alvarez, but they're relieved to know there may be a break in this case.

"This was almost like a saving grace to hear this news today and we hope it's going to lead to the capture of whoever kidnapped her," said Deborah's sister-in-law Sandra Brown.

"We've spent nights wondering where is that van? How can we find that van? Now that the van has been found we just have some peace," said family friend Susan Peterson. "It has been stressful because we've been wondering why and who could have done this to her. She was such a sweet and kind and loving person, a wonderful mother and we just want to find out who did this. Why d
id they do this because now these three little girls don't have anyone...a mother to raise them."

Eagle Pass police said when Alvarez was arrested he did give a Corpus Christi address, but authorities in Eagle Pass recognized the man, because they had numerous run-ins with him when he was a juvenile.

Bee county investigators don't know if Alvarez had anything to do with Debra Slough's murder. Sheriff Carlos Carrizales said they will be sending a team to Eagle Pass to interview Alvarez and look for evidence inside the van, to see if they can unearth any more clues into what's been called a very frustrating case.

When Eagle Pass police arrested Alvarez, they found he has an outstanding warrant for a parole violation.

Nurse's killer takes plea bargain, is sentenced to life without parole
August 12, 2006

The man accused of kidnapping and killing a Christus Spohn nurse last September was convicted of capital murder Friday and sentenced to life in prison by a state district judge, with no possibility of parole.

Jesus Francisco Alvarez, 29, accepted a prosecutor's plea bargain sent to defense attorneys Tuesday, which ensures the former Eagle Pass resident will not be executed in exchange for a guilty plea.

Alvarez kidnapped Spohn Shoreline nurse Debra Slough from the hospital's parking lot and later shot her once in the head o
n a county road just west of Beeville, District Attorney Martha Warner said.

District Judge Janna Whatley took 20 minutes to look over Alvarez's case file before convicting him.

Alvarez waived his right to a jury trial and faces limited opportunity for appeal by accepting the plea deal.

Friday's court date originally was meant as a pretrial hearing, and Warner said she didn't know in advance the defense would accept the deal.

"The deal was in the best interest of Mr. Alvarez," said Elliott H. Costas, Alvarez's lead defense attorney. Costas did not offer further comment.

Warner said the state decided to make the deal to bring immediate closure to Slough's family. If Alvarez was convicted of capital murder in a jury trial and sentenced to death, he would have had years to appeal the decision.

"There's no question in my mind that a Bee County jury would have decided to put a needle in his arm," Warner said . "The family's been waiting a long time for t
his."

Slough, a 45-year-old mother of three, was last seen Sept. 10 in Corpus Christi as she left work at the hospital. Authorities found her body on a Bee County road the next day, and her minivan was missing. Authorities later found Alvarez in Eagle Pass driving Slough's minivan.

Warner said she thinks Alvarez didn't know the nurse before the kidnapping.

"He needed money and wanted to murder her," Warner said. "All he really got out of the whole thing was a car and life without parole."

Warner added that Alvarez tied Slough up in the back of the van. After he stopped on County Road 322, Alvarez untied Slough and told her she could run, Warner said based on police accounts and Alvarez's confession.

Slough wasn't interested in running, Warner said. Alvarez then opened fire, missing the first time but hitting her in the head the second.

Alvarez sat motionless during the hearing, showing little expression. His orange prison jumpsuit and white sneakers cl
ashed with the parquet dance floor of the Bee County Coliseum, which was serving as a temporary 156th District Court courtroom until a new courthouse is finished.

Slough's husband, Corey Slough, could not be reached for comment after the hearing.

"Only God knows why he did it," said Slough's younger brother, Daniel Schwankel. "I'm just glad it's come to an end. It's closing time."

At least one family member will have a chance to address Alvarez directly in a court hearing scheduled for Sept. 21.

Alvarez is the first person to be sentenced to life without parole in Bee County after the Texas Legislature changed capital murder sentencing guidelines during the last regular session.

In other action during Friday's hearing, Alvarez asked the judge for no special treatment in prison and was ordered to pay $20,000 in restitution to the Crime Victims' Compensation Fund.

Man accepts plea bargain for Beeville murder

BEEVILLE - During what was supposed to be a routine pre-trial hearing on Friday, 29-year-old Jesus Alvarez took a plea deal from prosecutors for the 2005 murder of 45-year-old Debra Slough. He'll spend the rest of his life behind bars without the possibility of parole.

Prosecutors approached Alvarez's attorneys with the deal Tuesday and had no idea that he'd take it, until right before Friday's hearing in a make shift courtroom inside the Bee County Coliseum before District Judge Jana Whatley of the 343rd District Court. Alvarez appeared to be smiling after learning his fate, but the man behind the smile w
ill never see another day of freedom.

Police in Sept. 2005, police found Slough, the mother of three, off a road in Bee county with a shot in the back of the head. Prosecutors said the motive in the case appeared to be money. They said Alvarez needed some to pay back drug dealers and simply picked Slough as a random target.

She had no money or credit cards on her - just some jewelry. Some of Slough's family members, including her brother, were inside the courtroom on Friday.

"There is no reason why, who's going to tell me why?" Daniel Schwankel, Slough's brother, asked after the sentencing. "Who's going to give me a reason why? Only God knows why, and that's what it is."

Slough's brother said her three children are holding up as well as can be expected in a case like this, and the family is slowly dealing with the tragedy.

"For the most part, it's been real quiet, real quiet," he said. "How would you feel? I mean - just real quiet."

Family members said Slough was right with God. In fa
ct, prosecutors said Alvarez gave Slough his rosary after he abducted her. Closure was the most prominent word around the makeshift courthouse.

"I'm just glad it's coming to an end, really," Schwankel said. "It's closure time. It's well deserved."

Nasty, dirty looking spic. Too bad our government is trying to ruin our nation with these repulsive invaders.

Thanks 88 for the assistance and again, apologies for being on a "thorazine infested puter".

I agree AB...and my feelings increase in rage at what I see happening to Whites at the hands of spiritual reincarnations of EVIL DEMONS IN THE FLESH. Not saying there are not "whites" as such but this is a NO CONTEST reality for US as WHITES who are daily and constantly a conscious target of some kind of diabolical plan to hurt and destroy us as a RACE!

Our young people are being polluted with the filth and vile "DARK MINDSETS" of those that HATE US whereas we, as a MORE LOVING RACE, allow for ourselves to be victimized, used, abused, and lied to on a daily basis and this of course being aided and abetted by the synagouge of satan J E W controlled education, media, and entertainment areas.

"Preachin to the choir" I know. Just ventin
