(KMSP) - A pair of Minnesota sisters were on a dream vacation off the African coast last week, when they mysteriously died.

Annie Korkki, 38, and Robin Korkki, 42, were found unresponsive in their room at the Maia Resort at Anse Louis on Sept. 22.

According to local newspaper Seychelles Nation, hotel staff observed the women consuming alcohol throughout the day Wednesday and were helped to their room around 8:15 p.m.

Police say the butler returned around 8:30 a.m. Thursday to find the door to the villa was as he left it the night before. By 11 a.m., the newspaper reports, there was still no sign of them, prompting hotel staff to enter the room where they found the sisters dead in the bed.

Police told local media that there were no signs of a physical altercation or violence.

“The family is in shock,” said brother Chris Korkki. “Everyone is trying to understand and come to terms with what happened.”

Chris Korkki said local authorities, along with the US Embassy, are doing a great job with the investigation, but they still haven’t discovered how his sisters died.

“We’re devastated and saddened and just looking for answers,” he said.

With the US Embassy involved, an autopsy was planned to take place.

Police: Autopsies Done for Sisters Found Dead in Seychelles
VICTORIA, Seychelles — Sep 30, 2016, 10:34 AM ET

Police in Seychelles say two American sisters found dead in their resort island villa died of excess fluid in their lungs.

The bodies of 37-year-old Annie Korkki and 42-year-old Robin Korkki were found last week at the Maia resort on Seychelles main island, Mahe. Seychelles is an archipelago nation off Africa's east coast in the Indian Ocean.

The Seychelles News Agency reports Friday that police say autopsies show the Minnesota natives died from acute pulmonary edema, or having fluid in their lungs. Cerebral edema, or fluid in the brain, was also cited in Anne Korkki's death.

The news agency reports that the autopsies were done Wednesday by a forensic pathologist in the neighboring Indian Ocean island of Mauritius.

Annie Korkki lived in Denver. Robin Korkki lived in Chicago.
