Man arrested over taxi bashing

DETECTIVES have arrested a 30-year-old Brunswick man in connection with the serious assault of a taxi driver on Saturday.
Trainee doctor Noman Ahmed, 27, of Monee Ponds, was savagely bashed while driving a cab to finance a medical career in his new country.
Moreland detectives arrested the man today after getting information from the public.
Mr. Ahmed, who moved to Melbourne from Pakistan last year, said the assault had shown him a dark side of his new home.
He was driving his brother's taxi to help pay for university study in order to upgrade his medical qualifications to allow him to practice in Melbourne.
"I had a very good image of Australia when I came here but after this incident I am very afraid.''
According to police the attacker hailed Mr. Ahmed's taxi in the city about 4.30am before directing the driver to a series of city brothels.
Police and the driver will allege he was beaten unconscious after a passenger ran from the cab without paying a fare of more than $100.
