By Alicia RobertsMay 7, 2022 at 11:21 pm

CHESTER, Pa (CBS) — The family of a tow truck driver is pleading for justice after he was ambushed and shot on the job early Tuesday morning. On Saturday night, Jamie King remains in critical condition as Chester police search for his shooter.
Nicole King says it’s a miracle her husband is even alive Saturday after Chester city police say someone upset after their car was repossessed pulled out a gun and started shooting.
“Motorcycle loving, tattooed sweetheart,” said Nicole King, who was holding back tears as she described her husband, Jamie.
Her husband is a father of four who works for a company that repossesses cars when owners default on their payments.

“Jamie loved his job,” Nicole King said. “He loved it. I mean, he would joke and say, ‘ I get to steal cars for a living. It’s the best job.’”
While the work can be dangerous, Nicole King says she never imagined the news that was to come when she heard a knock on her door early Tuesday morning.
“My heart sunk into my stomach, I knew something was wrong,” she said.
Jamie King just finished a call in Chester and had hopped out of his tow truck to lock the gate. That’s when police say a vehicle pulled up and a person with a gun got out and started firing shots. He was struck in the head, chest, and stomach and was rushed into surgery. He remains sedated in critical condition.
“He absolutely hears my voice and recognizes me. He can take commands. He’ll squeeze your hand if you tell him to, or give a thumbs up, or wiggle his toes,” Nicole King said.
Jamie King’s recovery will likely take months and years. His wife is at a loss for how someone could do this to someone just doing his job.

As Chester City police investigate, Nicole King prays no one else gets hurt as her husband begins the long process of healing.
“We’re taking it a day at a time, sometimes a minute at a time,” Nicole King said. “Our lives have literally flipped upside down in the blink of an eye.”
Chester police tell Eyewitness News they have a person of interest. Friends have set up an online fundraiser to help with Jamie King’s medical costs.

CHESTER, Pa. (CBS) -- Eight people were injured after a shooting near Subaru Park in Chester. City of Chester Police Commissioner Steven Gretsky says the shooting happened outside the stadium at West Front and Norris Streets, around 11:30 p.m. Sunday.

Police say a 17-year-old male was shot in the torso and shoulder. He remains hospitalized and in critical condition. The other gunshot victims are between 17 and 18 years old. They have been treated and expected to be OK.

It's still unclear what led to the shooting.

Although the shooting happened outside the stadium, police say it was within line of sight of the stadium, right near Lot A.

Witness information suggests a group of about 100 teens were celebrating the end of the school year and high school graduation when they were ambushed.

Gretzky says that it was first unclear if this was an actual shooting given the amount of calls for fireworks. When they got there, they first found a 17-year-old female with a gunshot wound to the hand.

Jasmine Morales says she was there moments before the gunshots.

"Somebody came from that way shooting," Morales said.

She tells CBS News Philadelphia there were no signs of trouble preceding the shooting, just young people having a good time.

"These were all kids," Morales said. "There were nobody here who were adults who had problems — there's no way they should have come here shooting at these kids."

The shooting happened a few hours after the Philadelphia Union's affiliate team, Union II, played a 7 p.m. game against Crew II. Police say there is no link between activity at the park and the shooting.

The Philadelphia Union issued the following statement:

"We are saddened by the gun violence that took place in Chester at the intersection of Norris and Delaware Street late last night. The events happened several hours after a second team match had ended and occurred in an outer parking lot area on the opposite side of the bridge that had not been open for the game. Anyone with information or questions regarding the investigation should be directed to Chester City Police Department."
No arrests have been made.

Police are urging people who may know anything in relation to this shooting to contact the police department.

King was shot in the head, chest and stomach. He had to undergo multiple surgeries and re-learn how to walk, talk and eat. A bullet still remains lodged in his brain.

"The trauma and struggle and aggravation," Jamie King said.

"And the pain you know that we have all gone through throughout this process, I mean Jamie is a true miracle," Nicole King, Jamie's wife, said.

Nicole King says the support and prayers from family, friends and even strangers helped her get through the past 13 months, and that she is thankful to the detectives who never gave up.

CHESTER, Pa. (CBS) -- Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer asked the community for prayers Saturday night as questions remain about what happened when an officer was shot amid a short pursuit in Chester.

CBS Philadelphia learned that Officer Steve Byrne, a senior detective with Chester police, is recovering at Crozer-Chester Medical Center following the shooting.

"We are thankful that our hero, our police officer, is doing well," Stollsteimer said.

According to investigators, around 3:30 p.m. Officer Byrne was trying to stop a male driver police said was wanted for a homicide near 9th and Kerlin Streets earlier Saturday.

That led to a brief pursuit, and when the suspect crashed near West 14th Street and Arbor Drive, police said that driver started shooting.

"As he pulled that vehicle over or attempted to pull that vehicle over the driver got out of the car, shooting his gun and firing at the police officer," Stollsteimer said. "The police officer returned fire and the officer was wounded."

CBS Philadelphia was told Byrne was hit in the torso and rushed to the emergency room, where members of the Chester police department gathered Saturday night to support each other. The driver and suspected shooter was also taken to the hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Earlier in the day, resident Jeff Leins told CBS Philadelphia he heard more than a dozen shots. "Then, I heard shots fired back...I heard maybe about 10 of them," he said.

More than 45 evidence markers covered the ground as multiple police departments responded.

Neighbors in the area said they were surprised by the shooting.

"Because it's quiet," Rebecca Oliver said. "It's always quiet you can hear a pin drop over here even at night."

During a news conference, the Chester City Mayor Stefan Roots called it a sad day and said he's thankful the officer is expected to pull through.

"I will say this to anyone who wants to challenge our police officers when they're in the line of duty, don't," Mayor Roots said. "It turns out in a tragedy like we've seen today."

Police have not released the name of the suspect who died.

Officer Byrne is now the third officer in Delaware County shot in the last 10 days.
