A search of the Newark house of a man accused of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old led to the morbid discovery of mummified human remains and an “altar to an unknown deity,” the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office announced Friday.

Robert Frank Williams, 53, of Newark, was charged with various endangering the welfare of a child offenses, sexual assault of a victim between the ages of 13 and 15, child luring and desecration of human remains, officials said.

The Newark Police started investigating Williams after they received word that he sexually assaulted the child for several months in 2018, authorities said.

On Thursday, detectives from the prosecutor’s office and Newark Police executed a search warrant Williams’ home and found the mummified human remains in a bin in the closet and the altar in his bedroom, according to a release.

The identify of the remains was not released Friday and no other information was provided by the prosecutor’s office.

NEWARK, N.J. (CBS/AP) — Police responding to a call about child sexual abuse said they found mummified remains and an altar to an unknown deity in the Essex County home of a man who is now facing multiple charges. Robert Williams is scheduled for an initial court appearance Friday.

He is charged with crimes including aggravated sexual assault, child endangerment and charged with crimes including aggravated sexual assault, child endangerment and desecration of human remains.

According to the Essex County prosecutor’s office, Newark police investigated after receiving reports that the 53-year-old Williams had been abusing a 13-year-old child for several months.

Authorities said a search of Williams’ home last Thursday uncovered human remains stuffed in a bin in a closet. Investigators also saw a religious object they believed to be an altar.

It wasn’t clear where the remains came from or whether they had any connection to the alleged sexual abuse.

Williams was being held in the Essex County jail Wednesday, according to jail records. It wasn’t known whether he had an attorney who could comment on the charges.

Newark man found with mummified remains in his closet

NEWARK — Prosecutors called a New Jersey man "dangerous to society" after pieces of a human body were found in his closet, including a head, part of an arm, and a torso dressed in a necktie and suit jacket.

Robert Williams, of Newark, pleaded not guilty Monday to desecrating human remains and separate charges of child sexual abuse.

Police initially went to Williams home to investigate allegations he abused a 12- to 13-year-old boy over several months, but when they searched the apartment they found an altar and mummified human remains that had apparently been used in religious ceremonies, according to prosecutors.

The county's medical examiner has yet to identify the remains, but Assistant Essex County Prosecutor Michael Morris said Monday that they aren't related to the sex abuse charges.

The remains, found in a plastic bin, "raise the specter of a person out of step with society and dangerous to society," Morris told the judge in arguing for detention.
