Hallandale agrees to rename Southwest Eighth Avenue after Martin Luther King Jr.

Hallandale Beach commissioners on Tuesday agreed to add the name of Martin Luther King Jr. to Southwest Eighth Avenue.

But at same meeting, commissioner
agreed to withdraw between $8,000 and $12,000 in city support for the Jan. 19 Martin Luther King parade. Commissioners made that move because parade organizers would not budge on their decision t
o ke
ep suspended Broward Supervisor of Elections Miriam Oliphant as the parade's grand marshal.

City officials want to place Maudie James, winner of the city's Martin Luther King Humanitarian Award, in that spot.

The city commission's decisions on Tuesday carry dual impacts on both streets and festivities in town that bear the name of Martin Luther King.

Northwest Eighth Avenue, on the north side of Hallandale Beach Boulevard, already bears the slain civil rights leader's name. But for 15 years, the southern part of the avenue did not.

The decision to change the name was prompted by Vice Mayor William Julian, who first proposed the name change in 2002, but to no avail.

Julian cited the changing population of the community surrounding Southwest Eighth Av
enue as a reason to address the issue now.

The community has changed drastically in the past 15 years from predominantly non-Hispanic white to a mix of blacks, Hispanics, Canadian snowbirds and n
on-Hispanic
whites.
