Police Charge Former Aide With Disabled Woman's Rape - Patient Gave Birth To Daughter
DuPage County State's Attorney Joseph Birkett announced Wednesday that an 18-year-old man was arrested and charged in the rape of a mentally disabled nursing home resident who gave birth to a baby last summer.

Amy Jo Hale, 23, had resided at the Alden Village Health Facility for Children and Young Adults until June 2005 when it was discovered that she was pregnant.
Birkett announced that former Alden employee Raynaldo Brucal Jr., of Schaumburg, was arrested by Bloomin
gdale Police Tuesday night and charged with four counts of criminal sexual assault. If convicted, Brucal could face
a 30-year prison sentence.
Brucal's bond was set at $1,000,000.

Raynaldo, a nurse's aide at the Bloomingdale facility, raped and impregnated the victim while in his care, Birkett said.
"The DNA profile was taken, as you know, from the child after her birth," Birkett said. "That profile, the male donor, was compared to the pool of employees from Alden and that's the way we made the arrest."
Records obtained by Unit 5 show 50 people, mostly Alden employees, were tested for DNA last summer. Brucal gave the Bloomingdale Police a DNA mouth swab on July 8, 2005.
Brucal's DNA was a match with Hale's daughter, Alexis, who was born in August as a result of the alleged rape.

"They're the most vulnerable patients that you can imagine someone to be," Fox said. "They're just completely vulnerable. The power of DNA
in the case was pretty extraordinary."
A statement from Alden's management said, "Our prayers remain with Amy Jo Hale and her family. We are pleased that the Bloomingdale Police Department's tireless efforts have resulted in an arrest and that our residents and staff will have renewed peace of mind."
Unit 5 broke the story of Hale's pregnancy last summer.
The Bloomingdale Police, DuPage County Sheriff, State Dept of Public Health all launched investigations.
The victim's mother, Cheryl Hale Crom, has filed a civil law suit against the Alden Village Nursing Home of Bloomingdale.

Raynaldo's case was not related to another criminal case involving an Alden facility in Cicero.
In that case, Mary Chrzaszcz, 76, was found strangled in her bed at the Alden Town Ma
nor Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in the west suburb.
A woman believed to be a suspect in the case later died of natural causes on Sept. 14, according to news reports.
Alden Town Manor received citations for 16 health deficiencies in its last inspection by the Illinois Department of Public Health in February, according to news reports. The facility also was cited for nine health deficiencies in 2004.
Department spokeswoman Tammy Leonard was not immediately available for comment Wednesday afternoon.

BLOOMINGDALE, Ill. -- A nursing home that employed a man now charged with sexually assaulting a severely disabled woman who became pregnant is accused of failing to investigate the alleged assault when it first was suspected.

The state cited Alden Village Health Facility for Children and Young Adults for 19 deficiencies in August. The report was released to the Chicago Tribune on Friday.
The deficiencies included not investigating or reporting claims by a worker who suspected Amy Jo Hale's pregnancy three months before the woman was determined to be seven months pregnant. She gave birth just five weeks later.

Alden representatives declined to comment on the report.
