Tears and emotions spilled out at a meeting Tuesday night to discuss Marva Collins' decision to take her name off the Milwaukee charter school. The meeting ended with a few people shouting, many more crying, and the questions of dozens of concerned parents unanswered.

A standing-room-only crowd of teachers, parents and students came to hear Collins speak at the Central Library and to ask questions of her
and school Principal Robert Rauh.

Collins, who earned national renown for a school she started out of her own home in
Chicago, announced last week that the Marva Collins Preparatory School of Wisconsin could no longer bear her name.

Dozens of parents who came to ask her about that decision were left wondering instead how things went so wrong at a meeting intended to air both sides.

"I was going to ask, 'How do we conclude all of this in a peaceful fashion?' " said Keith Bailey, a parent whose sixth-grader attends Marva Collins. He lamented after the meeting that he never had a chance.

Collins and her husband, George Franklin, both spoke at the start, arguing that the school failed to live up to Collins' ideals.

"I never said the school was a bad school," Collins said. "I did say it was not a Marva Collins school." She argued that the school had brought in too many outside programs. The school is widely considered a success, with mos
t of its test scores consistently well above average for the city.

"I go on strike tonight against mediocrity," Collins added. "I go on strike against 'good enough.' "

Ad
ministrators at the school said Collins asked for up to $300,000 to pay for her to spend an extended period in Milwaukee advising the school.

Then [Principal] Rauh started to speak. He praised Collins, saying her book inspired him when he was a novice teacher in East Los Angeles. Collins twice interrupted Rauh, one time critiquing his pronunciation of the word "preparatory."

"Perpatory?" "Perspiratory?" "Predatory?" "Pepsitory"??? :rotfl:

At that point, a few audience members began shouting and took over the floor.

Uh oh, no
w who could have predicted THAT happening in this setting?

One [audience member] criticized Collins for interrupting, and another responded that she was sick of seeing disrespect for Collins.

Several audience members began crying, and Collins herself appeared to be crying as she left the room. One woman, escorting Collins out, shouted, "You people don't realize what you are doing to your children," as the group left.[
