Man's charges upgraded to homicide after wife falls from car during argument

BATON ROUGE – A man's charges have been upgraded to negligent homicide in the death of his wife after she fell from his car during a heated argument.

On July 30 around 8 p.m. 39-year-old Calvin Hawkins had an argument with his wife, Shadelle, when the argument escalated as she got into the driver's seat of Calvin's car, according to BRPD. Calvin pulled her out of the vehicle and began to drive away as Shadelle grabbed the driver-side door.

While driving, Calvin tried to pry her hands from the door, but after traveling 300 feet he abruptly stopped the car causing Shadelle to fall to the ground, according to BRPD. Calvin fled the scene after realizing his wife was unresponsive.

Shadelle was transported to an area hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries. Calvin was initially charged with aggravated second degree battery, but has been upgraded to the above charge.
