Man jailed for HIV infection

A man who kept his HIV diagnosis secret from his then partner has been sentenced to at least three years in prison for infecting her.

Christopher Muronzi, 44, knew he had the virus by mid-1995.

But when he began a relationship with the woman, who cannot be named, more than seven years later he didn't tell her of his status.

After their relationship ended, the woman unknowingly infected her new partner.

Sentencing Muronzi on Friday for one count of maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm, Judge Penelope Hock said the physical and emotional harm caused by the 44-year-old was substantial.

"(It) had serious consequences not only for the complainant but for the community in general," she told the District Court in Sydney.

She said the Zimbabwe-born financial consultant would have foreseen the possibility that the woman would be infected during their relationship but did nothing.

"It has and will cause her serious and life-long consequences," the judge said.

Reading from the victim's own statement on how the crime affected her, Judge Hock said the woman, who was diagnosed in 2004, was "still trying to cope with the aftershock" of the disease.

However, Judge Hock said she was satisfied Muronzi was genuinely remorseful and that he had good prospects of rehabilitation.

The father also received a discount for his guilty plea.

He was sentenced to a maximum of four-and-a-half years.
Taking into account time already served, Muronzi will be eligible for release in September 2016.
