gators mark evidence following a shooting Wednesday at Hart Plaza during the 46th International Freedom Festival fireworks.
DETROIT --A gunman opened fire into a crowd that had gathered downtown to watch the city's annual fireworks display, wounding nine people and forcing hundreds of revelers to scatter.
Police Chief Ella Bully-Cummings said early Thursday that the shootin
g apparently occurred after an argument and that innocent people were caught in the crossfire.
This is what happens when you don't know how to resolve conflicts without violence, Bully-Cummings said. We are following up with witnesses now, trying to understand what happened.
Bully-Cummings said investigators recovered a handgun used in Wednesday's shooting at the Hart Plaza area and had a good desc
ription of the suspect.
Eight people were treated at Detroit Receiving Hospital: two were in critical condition, three were in stable condition, one was in temporary stable condi
tion and two wer
e treated and released, said hospital spokeswoman Karen Wood. The victims' ages ranged from 18 to the late 40s.
One of the victims, a 22-year-old man, suffered a bullet wound to his heart, police said.
After the shooting, dozens of police converged on the area, and people in the crowd pushed to get out of the way. Police cleared the area of crowds, which were heavy due to the a
nnual fireworks display.
As the fireworks show took place, ambulances were seen picking up victims, and police worked to investigate the shooting.
Yellow police tape was used to cordon off the scene. A bike, backpacks, coolers and blankets brought by those who watched the fireworks were scattered about.
Bully-Cummings, who couldn't confirm exactly when the shooting took place, said it apparently occ
urred after an argument over women and that innocent people got caught in the crossfire.
She said the shootings were confined to a relatively small area.
We had
a phenomenal firewor
ks display, Bully-Cummings said. Unfortunately, we also had an incident where ... people were shot.
Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick said during a news conference Thursday morning that most of the tens of thousands of spectators were not aware the shootings had taken place.
Ninety-nine percent of those people went home and had a really great family time, Kilpatrick said. There was no
pandemonium, nobody was running around madly.
The mayor said that, apart from the actions of one idiot, the city provided visitors with an absolutely fantastic experience and customer service at its best.
Kilpatrick said he planned to visit the shooting victims who were hospitalized. He also called on the gunman to surrender.
Do one good thing out of all the bad things you've done over the la
st couple of hours, the mayor said.
Andrea Bobo, 23, of Detroit, said she was about 30 feet from where the shooting took place. She said the shooting took place
about 10 p.m. EDT, short
ly before the fireworks display began, and there had been several fights in the area.
" don't think I will ever come back again, Bobo said of the International Freedom Festival fireworks display.
Hundreds of thousands of people packed into downtown and the surrounding areas along the Detroit River that runs between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, to watch the dis
play, which is a summertime tradition. The Freedom Festival, held for more than four decades, is organized to celebrate the bonds between the cities.
During the 1991 fireworks display, a white Farmington Hills woman was assaulted during the show, further straining race relations in the city. The beating was recorded on videotape by a bystander and received national attention. Five black women pleaded no contest to charges in the case.
A sixth woman was found not guilty of assault.
In the intervening years, there have been no major problems.
