LI Teenagers Sentenced In Hate Crime Arson

(1010 WINS) (Riverhead, Long Island) -- Three Long Island teenagers will be sentenced today for hate crimes for torching a Mexican family's home last summer.

Eighteen-year-old Kyle Mahler, of Farmingville, 17-year-old William Lutz, and 18-year-old Derek Brandafino are scheduled to appear in Suffolk County court in Riverhead later today.

Prosecutors say Mahler will receive one-and-a-third-to-four-years in prison. Lutz and Brandafino will be sentenced to 500 hours of community service and five years probation.

Another teen, 17-year-old Scott Soucek, was sentenced to 1-and-a-third-to-four-years in prison in April. The case of a fifth teen, who is
ifteen-years-old, was handled in juvenile court.

Brandafino cooperated with authorities, leading to the arrest of the other four.

Prosecutors say Mahler drove his friends to the Mexican family&
#39;s home in Farmingville last July. Soucek ad
mitted he fired a bottle rocket through an open window, setting the home on fire. The other teens were charged with watching as the house burned.

The family, including two children ages two and six, narrowly managed to escape the fire.
