Crews Respond to New Jersey Condo After Person Displays Ebola-Like Symptoms
By Dan Stamm

Hazmat crews responded to a New Jersey condo complex after a man showed Ebola-like symptoms but police said they don't believe the patient has the potentially deadly disease.

State and local police responded overnight Tuesday into Wednesday to what they called a hazmat situation at the Coventry Square neighborhood at Squankum Road & E Kennedy Boulevard in Lakewood Township, Ocean County.

The Lakewood Scoop reported the patient just returned from Africa and had symptoms -- including a high fever and vomiting. Those are symptoms of a lot of things and no one knows exactly what caused the patient to become ill.

A police supervisor said the man isn't from the Coventry Square neighborhood and was likely visiting someone in the area. The supervisor said the man was taken from his car to Monmouth Medical Center in Lakewood after someone called 911.

The supervisor said they don't believe the man has Ebola. It could be a few days before we know for sure.

Man Diagnosed With Malaria After Lakewood ‘Hazmat’ Situation
July 8, 2015 6:50 AM

LAKEWOOD TOWNSHIP, N.J. (CBS) — Police in South Jersey responded to a potential hazmat situation on Tuesday night.

Around 9:20 p.m. on July 7, officers responded to 605 East Countyline Road in response to a man with an unknown medical problem.

Upon arrival, officers located a 66-year-old Neptune man outside his vehicle. That man was reportedly experiencing symptoms such as a high fever and vomiting and had recently returned from Africa.

The man was taken to Monmouth Medical Southern Campus, where he was quarantined pending testing.

Crews assigned to decontaminate the victim’s vehicle reportedly spotted several household items commonly associated with making explosives. As a result, the NJSP Bomb Squad responded and assessed the vehicle, deeming it safe.

After an investigation revealed the man had not visited any of the countries reporting cases of Ebola, the man tested positive for malaria.

Hospital officials allegedly told police the victim is no longer in isolation and is doing well.

Crews Respond to New Jersey Wawa After Person Displays Ebola-Like Symptoms, Turns Out to Be Malaria
By Dan Stamm
Updated at 5:56 PM EDT on Wednesday, Jul 8, 2015

Hazmat crews responded to a New Jersey Wawa after a man showed Ebola-like symptoms there, but police said officials don't believe the patient has the potentially deadly disease.

Rather, authorities said, the man is believed to be suffering from malaria, a mosquito-borne illness.

State and local police responded overnight Tuesday into Wednesday to what they called a hazmat situation at Squankum and East County Line roads in Lakewood Township, Ocean County.

Original reports stated the man had Ebola-like symptoms at a nearby condo complex, but Lakewood Police Chief Robert Lawson later clarified that the situation began around 9 p.m. Tuesday after a man began to vomit at a Wawa convenience store, causing someone to call 911.

Medics took the man from his car and rushed him to Monmouth Medical Center, where a series of tests determined the man -- who returned from a trip to Africa about three weeks ago -- didn't have Ebola, but rather malaria, said police. The man had visited Nigeria, which isn't a hot bed for Ebola, said Lawson.

Malaria isn't spread from person to person like a cold or flu, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
