READING, Pa. (CBS) -- A 13-year-old girl who was abducted from a home in Reading early Wednesday morning was found safe in Brooklyn. Police say the teen girl is being reunited with her family soon.

Police say the girl was abducted by the man inside her home at 2 a.m. on the 500 block of South Court in the Glenside Homes.

The man was arrested in Brooklyn. Police identified him as Duane Taylor.

Reading Police Chief Richard Tornielli says investigators believe the man has a connection to the girl.

"We don't believe that this was a random kidnapping," Tornielli said. "We believe this individual was kidnapped by someone that she may have known or had known her. The neighborhood is safe and there is no danger to the public."

The teen girl's abduction led to an Amber Alert being issued just before 3 p.m. Wednesday.

She was last seen on Schuylkill Avenue and was placed in a silver Chevy Traverse with Pennsylvania plates.

State police canceled the Amber Alert at 6:48 p.m. on Wednesday after the girl was found in New York City.

The NYPD and FBI assisted in arresting the suspect.

"Let this be a lesson for anybody who's trying to harm one of our little ones that we will do anything possible to make sure that they get apprehended immediately," Reading Mayor Eddie Moran said, "and we have zero, zero tolerance for that."

Taylor is currently in custody in New York and facing state charges.

A 13-year-old girl who was reported missing from Pennsylvania was found walking without shoes on a Brooklyn street Wednesday, police said.
Janae Kalia-Henry was spotted on Liberty Avenue in Cypress Hill around 5:40 p.m. after a 911 caller alerted police. The teen told the caller she had been kidnapped, police said.
The suspect in Kalia-Henry’s abduction, a 47-year-old Brooklyn man, was arrested by police outside his home on Wednesday, according to cops.
Pennsylvania authorities identified the suspect as Dwayne Taylor and said he allegedly took the girl from her Redding, Pa., home on Tuesday.
Charges against Taylor were pending, the NYPD said.
Reading Police Chief Richard Tornielli said there was a connection between Taylor and the victim, but did not elaborate.
“This wasn’t a random, off-the-street kidnapping,” he said during a press conference streamed by local media Wednesday.
Pennsylvania police contacted the NYPD Wednesday afternoon about the kidnapping and told them they believed the possible suspect lived near the Broadway Junction subway station, authorities said.
Tornielli said Kalia-Henry didn’t require medical attention after she was brought to the hospital and would be coming home to Pennsylvania with local detectives.

Baby left inside North Philadelphia day care: "Nobody even knew where she was at"

Updated on: February 2, 2024 / 4:05 PM EST / CBS Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A Philadelphia family is demanding answers after they claim their daughter's day care forgot all about her. Workers at New Arisens Childcare Solutions in Feltonville locked up Thursday and left a 6-month-old girl inside the building alone.

"Did somebody take her? Did they take her to a police district, or is my baby dead," Cameron Banks said.

Banks was in a frenzy after going to the North Philadelphia day care to pick up his 6-month-old daughter Amora around 5:30 p.m. Thursday only to find the day care was closed and locked.

The day care, located on Whitaker Avenue near Hurley Street, is supposed to be open until 6 p.m. A Philadelphia Police spokesperson said preliminary information indicated that the center did not close until 6 p.m.

Banks called every number he could think of to track down any information.

"I tried calling multiple different places," Banks said. "They have another location, and I was getting voicemail. Nobody even knew where she was at."

Banks then called 911.

"Something was telling me that she's in here, she's in here," Banks said.

Police met with the building's key holder to get inside. As they attempted to unlock the grate, it jammed and left the police to rely on firefighters to cut through the metal bars only to remove it entirely.

"Police were able to get into the day care center," Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said. "It was dark. When they got inside, they found the 6-month-old baby girl in the corner asleep in a car seat."

"They walked in and out pretty fast," Banks said. "So I thought they were coming to tell us bad news. But then, they actually told us she was inside and she was OK. Happy. There was a whole bunch of crying. Just happy."

Banks said he was looking forward to her day at day care. Workers were supposed to take photos on Thursday.

"Today was the day of picture day," Banks said. "She had on her first Valentine's Day onesie, her little heart tutu. It was just a relief to see that she was OK."

Banks said he's thankful for the officers and the firefighters.

Police said the father and several employees were taken to the Special Victims Unit for questioning.

CBS News Philadelphia called New Arisens to find out how this could happen. They hung up on us.

The Whitaker location was closed Friday. CBS News Philadelphia went to the Tackawanna Street location for answers. They called through the door's intercom. The person who answered declined to comment or let us inside.

CBS News Philadelphia is also waiting to hear from the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services to see if there were any previous complaints filed about New Arisens.

A Texas mother was arrested after she allegedly abandoned her two young kids to go on a cruise — leaving the children home alone for nearly a week, officials said.

Lakesha Woods Williams, 29, was hit with two charges of child endangerment last Thursday after officers found her 8-year-old and 6-year-old alone in their high-rise apartment complex in Houston with no adult supervision, according to the Harris Country Constable- Precinct 5.

Williams left her kids to take her solo vacation on April 4 and returned the night of April 10. She was arrested the following day.

Deputies visited the apartment on April 9 and found the two kids alone in the apartment trashed with garbage and food all around the floor and a “potent smell of urine,” the documents state.

The place was in “complete disarray,” deputies said.

The children said their mother had left to go on a cruise and was communicating with them through a camera in the apartment and via text messages to the 8-year-old.

The kids were checked by paramedics as well as Child Protective Services. They were removed from the apartment and are now in the care of their aunt.

Neighbors told deputies it was “not the first time” they had been left at home with no adults.

“We are still putting together the facts and circumstances of how these children were left alone for several days,” Constable Ted Heap said. “But the important thing is they are safe now and those responsible should be held accountable for leaving these kids in an unsafe situation.”

Williams was booked into Harris County Jail on a $40,000 bond, according to jail records.
She is set to be in court Monday.
