4-year-old found safe after wondering away from mom at subway station

A 4-year-old boy became separated from his mother at a busy Brooklyn subway station during the Tuesday morning rush hour, and wound up all the way in lower Manhattan — but is safely back at home thanks to a good Samaritan and the NYPD, cops said.

Messiah Cummings was walking with his mom through the massive Broadway Junction station in East New York around 8:00 a.m. when he and his mom lost sight of each other, officials said.

“I was screaming, crying, looking for him,” Messiah’s “panicked” mom, whose name wasn’t released, told NBC 4 – New York. “I thought someone took him.”

Instead, the intrepid tot  ambled onto a Manhattan-bound J train, while cops who’d met up with his frantic mom emailed a photo of Messiah to every cop in the department, and tweeted out the same picture to the public.

As the train rumbled over the Williamsburg Bridge and into the Lower East Side, one fellow rider recognized the pint-sized straphanger from online alerts, police sources said.

The good Samaritan, whose name wasn’t released, brought Messiah to his office on the Bowery, called the police, and fed him breakfast while they waited.

“We went to the kid to make sure that he’s healthy, not scared, in good shape,” said Officer Chester Chung, who along with his partner went to pick up the wayward tyke. “I asked him a couple of questions. Very intelligent kid.”

“He said he was lost, and walked away from his mom, and the guy brought him to his workplace,” Chung said. “We made sure that he wasn’t hungry, bought him a Happy Meal. … He wanted his toy.”

The cops brought Messiah back to their station house, where they snapped a photo of him grinning and doodling in an NYPD coloring book.

They also put Messiah and his relieved mom in touch over Facetime, before she arrived for a joyous reunion.

She “was overwhelmed and excited that she had found her child,” said Chung’s partner, Kevin McArdle. “I was thrilled that it was the kid, that we found him, that he wasn’t harmed, that we were able to reunite [him with] his mother.”

Messiah was just as happy to be home.

“I missed my mommy,” the tot told NBC.

Added his mom, “I’m stressed. But I’m happy he’s OK.”

Man who ‘saved’ lost toddler on subway had open sex abuse warrant
By Stephanie Pagones, Tina Moore and Max Jaeger
October 17, 2018 | 1:06pm | Updated October 17, 2018 | 2:26pm

The man hailed as a hero for finding a lost 4-year-old boy on the subway Tuesday had an open warrant for child sex abuse and lied to cops about how far he traveled with the tot, according to police.

The 25-year-old “good Samaritan” told police he found young Messiah Cummings alone on a morning-rush J train pulling into Canal Street, took the kid with him to work on the Bowery because he was late, and called the authorities once he got there.

But police say the man — who had an open warrant for sexually assaulting a child family member — actually scooped the kid up at the Broadway Junction station way out in Brooklyn.

“We’re very lucky this kid’s OK,” an NYPD spokesman said. “We’ve seen the videos of him picking up the kid in Brooklyn.”

And it was actually a co-worker who alerted police about the boy after they became suspicious seeing the man with a random child, sources said.

“He had every opportunity to call police once he found the child, but decided to take him to work — and then didn’t even call police,” a police source said.

He was charged with kidnapping Tuesday, but the district attorney’s office declined to pursue the case, police said.

It turns out that the man was wanted for questioning for allegedly sexually abusing a family member in the Bronx, but the case fell through because the victim declined to prosecute, sources said.

Messiah was given a medical examination after police recovered him, and there was no sign of abuse, sources said.

RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) —

A 25-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly leaving her son alone in Chuck E. Cheese's, Boynton Beach police said.

Sharon Perry, of Riviera Beach, is facing a charge of child neglect for leaving a young boy alone in the Chuck E. Cheese's at 244 North Congress Ave., according to police. A witness saw the boy Saturday sitting at a booth by himself with no parental supervision.

She alerted the store manager and when the parents couldn't be found, Boynton Beach police were called to the scene, according to the arrest report. A family member later called police, saying Sherry was coming to pick the boy up. However, the boy was taken to the Boynton Beach Police station on High Ridge Road until the Department of Children and Families made a further determination.

Perry came to the Chuck E. Cheese's with a group of nine children and six adults for a party, police said. Perry said she rode in a car with her cousin to the arcade. Then at 9:30 p.m., Perry started to gather up all the children to leave. She said she was holding her oldest daughter and began to leave Chuck E. Cheese's.

Perry said she left Chick E. Cheese's without realizing her son was left behind because everyone came in several cars, according to police. She didn't realize her son was missing until she returned to her home in Riviera Beach. She said it was a mistake and thought he was in another car.

The boy was left alone in the Chuck E. Cheese's for about an hour.

Boy, 5, Left Alone on Bus for 7 Hours During Dangerous Cold
Published Jan 23, 2019 at 10:42 PM | Updated 2 hours ago

schoolkidthumbnail.png

A 5-year-old Delaware boy was left behind on a school bus for hours during dangerously cold temperatures.

“I was very scared,” Ibn Polk :p told NBC10.

The kindergartner was on a school bus headed to Linden Hill Elementary School in Wilmington Tuesday morning. Ibn fell asleep on the bus however and never got off. Officials said the bus driver never did her usual sweep after the other children were dropped off at school. She also allegedly ignored the other students when they told her a boy was still on the bus.

A spokeswoman for the Red Clay School District told NBC10 the school made a mistake by not calling his parents when he was marked absent Tuesday morning.

“Clearly that was a fail on our part,” Pati Nash of the Red Clay School District said. “The mom and the dad should have been notified.”

It wasn’t until about seven hours later when the driver was making her afternoon rounds to get students that she heard Ibn cough. She then realized he had been on the bus the entire time. His parents were then notified.

“She could have came back to the bus,” the boy’s father , Abdul Polk, told NBC10. “What you want a dead child now? It was cold. It was freezing.”

The boy’s parents said he was soaking wet and had urinated on himself by the time he was found. :D

A spokesperson for the Sutton Bus Company said that the driver was fired. The boy’s parents will attend a meeting Friday to watch surveillance video of the incident. Ibn, meanwhile, is doing well after the incident.

School Bus Driver Fired After Leaving 5-Year-Old Boy Trapped On Bus For Entire Day
January 24, 2019 at 10:55 pm

WILMINGTON, Del. (CBS) — A school bus driver who left a five-year-old niglet on a bus in Delaware has been fired by the busy company he works for. The boy got on the bus Tuesday morning around 8:30 a.m. and then likely fell asleep.

The boy wasn’t found until the bus driver re-boarded the bus for the afternoon route.

He attends Linden Elementary in the Red Clay School District.

The school district told Eyewitness News that procedures were not followed by the driver.

“Attendance was taken late that day in that classroom and it did not get down to the main office in time for the calls that go out to parents telling them that your child is not in school today. So, unfortunately, there were a number of points that did not go well and this just shouldn’t have happened,” said Pati Nash, a public information officer for the Red Clay School District.

CBS3 has been told the boy is in good health.

MOBILE, Ala. -- An infant child was found alone near a local restaurant early Friday morning, and his mother was subsequently found at a different location, naked and apparently under the influence:rolleyes:, police said.

Mobile police and fire department officials were on the scene early Friday morning at a local Waffle House where the baby was found alone near the restaurant.

This was on Government Street in The Loop area. The young child was found about 3:30 a.m., according to authorities.

Mobile Fire-Rescue Department spokesman Steven Millhouse told FOX10 News that a man found the baby outside the Waffle House. The man took the baby inside and called 911, Millhouse said.

The Mobile Police Department is investigating.

MPD Public Information Officer LaDerrick DuBose said the child is a 7-month-old infant boy who was found near the roadway by a man walking in the area.

The young child was placed into the custody of the Department of Human Resources, DuBose said.

"Through the course of the investigation, the mother of child was located in the 500 block of Dauphin Island Parkway naked and appeared to be under the influence of an unknown substance," DuBose said in an email to news media. "DHR was contacted and the child was transported to the hospital to be checked out."

Myeisha Walker, 23, was arrested and charged with reckless endangerment, DuBose said.

Turdler wanders into street after walking through Harlem day care’s broken door
By Gabrielle Fonrouge and Shevarnanzi Calle
March 15, 2019 | 7:35pm | Updated

A 2-year-old boy wandered out of a Harlem day-care center and was brought to safety when a good Samaritan spotted him trying to cross the street.

Curtayasia  Taylor, 37, dropped off her son Apollo  Vaughn at the St. Benedict’s Day Nursery on West 124th Street around 8:40 a.m. Thursday, the mom told The Post.

About 45 minutes later, the mom received a call from her son’s teacher who said Apollo had gone missing inside the building.

“What do you mean he’s missing inside the building?” Taylor barked into the phone.

The mom’s horror intensified, however, when she learned Apollo was not even inside the building but had wandered outside.

“We don’t know where he is,” a secretary told Taylor when she arrived at the school. “A man in a [Mercedes] Benz has him.”

Taylor went outside and spotted the man in the luxury car.

“What are you doing with my son?” she screamed.

The good Samaritan informed the mom that he found the boy just in the nick of time and brought him to a nearby school.

Curtayasia Taylor and her sons

“Ma’am, calm down, I helped save your son’s life,” the man replied, according to Taylor. “He was about to cross the street.”

At that point, Apollo was safely inside the Harlem Village Academy High School, a few doors down from the day care.

Taylor demanded to see surveillance video from the day care. She was horrified when she witnessed the toddler walking alone in such a busy area.

“I was hysterical . . . he was out the building walking down the street, he could’ve been abducted, he almost got hit by a car,” *Taylor said.

The Department of Health and the Administration for Children’s Services were called to the scene.

The DOH said the day care “failed to maintain proper child-to-staff ratio and that the front door of the establishment was not secured due to a broken lock, nor was it properly monitored. No effort to secure the door was made.”

The agency said it has shut down the nursery and “will require a corrective action plan before they will be reauthorized to reopen.”

Police responded to the scene and a report was filed.

PITTSBURGH - A Homewood mother is in jail after her children were allegedly found living in disgusting conditions.

According to police, a stranger driving by spotted one of the children nearly naked and standing in front of the house.

Inside the row house on Hamilton Avenue, police said there was feces, dirt and filth on almost everything.

It's where investigators said Stevatezia Mickel was living with her three children: ages 1 year, 3 years and a 6-year-old.

A woman who was passing by called 911 when, according to police, she said she saw a 3-year-old little girl standing on the sidewalk, naked, with only a towel covering her.

It was around 9 a.m. and 35 degrees outside.

When the woman walked the little girl inside the house, she saw a baby, sitting on the couch alone.

According to police, the baby had a messy diaper and it hadn't been changed in several hours.

After about 10 minutes, Mickel returned home.

That's when officers searched the house and said there was an "overwhelming odor of urine and feces in the residence."

Police said the floors were covered in dirt and feces, as well as most of the walls in the rooms and hallways.

“The floors throughout the entire residence were covered in dirt/feces, well as most of the walls on the rooms & hallways.” Police say Stevatezia Mickel & her three young children were living in deplorable conditions.... 2-Year-Old Girl Allegedly Abducted By Mother’s Ex-Boyfriend Returned Safely
April 17, 2019 at 12:00 pm

philadelphia-girl-abduction.jpg

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Philadelphia police say a 2-year-old girl who was abducted by the ex-boyfriend of the child’s mother has been safely returned home. The girl’s return happened in a strange way as two men who live nearby in East Mount Airy walked down the street, with one of them carrying the toddler in his arms, saying she has been returned.

The alleged abduction happened around 2:15 a.m. on the 6600 block of Ross Street after a fight broke out between the girl’s mother and the 21-year-old ex-boyfriend.

Investigators say the man broke a window at the home before making off with the child in her mother’s car. The mother told police the man is not the child’s father.

Officers kept in contact with the man through his ex-girlfriend’s phone, which he also took.

The men who brought the baby home said they rescued the child from a woman, not a man, at Germantown and Cheltenham Avenues.

“He’s a weirdo, I know that. Good fellas don’t do what he did,” the man said about the alleged abductor. “When I see you, I’m going to hurt you, point-blank, period, for the baby.”

The young girl is being taken to a nearby hospital to get checked out, but she appears unharmed.

Police are not sure where the ex-boyfriend is who allegedly abducted her.

Mother of Abandoned Newborn Baby Girl Found on Porch in Upper Darby Identified, Police Say

The mother of a newborn baby girl found abandoned on an Upper Darby porch has been identified and will face charges, township police said Friday.

She is a teenage girl younger than 18, police said in a tweet. They did not release her name.

The abandoned baby girl, believed to be only hours old, was found alone and wrapped in a blanket Tuesday afternoon.

The mother is 15 years old and her parents didn't know she was pregnant, Upper Darby Police Chief Michael Chitwood said.

Chitwood said the teenager had the girl in a bathroom and cut the umbilical cord herself.

Terrell Phillips told NBC10 he found the infant on his neighbor's porch on the 100 block of Englewood Road around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

"When I saw a little arm, I walked over and saw the baby," Phillips said.

Phillips immediately called 911 and checked on the child.

Police said the girl appeared to have been cleaned up when Phillips found her.

"She was sleeping," Phillips said. "No crying. Very quiet. She was just there. When I picked the baby up and opened the towel up the baby still had the umbilical cord on her."

The baby was taken to Delaware County Hospital where she was reportedly doing fine. The owner of the house told police they were outside around 9 a.m. and didn't see the child, meaning the baby may have been alone for a few hours before Phillips found her.

The home where the baby was found is located a half a mile away from the Upper Darby Township Police Department. Under Pennsylvania's Safe Haven Law, a parent may leave a newborn baby in the care of a hospital or with a police officer at a police station without being criminally liable as long as the baby is no older than 28 days and is not harmed.

15-Year-Old Mother Facing Charges After Turning Herself Into Police For Abandoning Hideous Newborn Niglet On Upper Darby Porch, Officials Say
By CBS3 Staff
August 2, 2019 at 11:05 pm

UPPER DARBY, Pa. (CBS) — A 15-year-old has been identified as the mother who abandoned her newborn baby girl on a porch in Upper Darby. The teen told police she was scared and didn’t know what to do.

The leader of one local organization says help is out there to prevent situations like this from happening.

Northern Children’s Services in Manayunk has a residential program for young mothers to help get them stabilized. They say that stability is often times what young mothers need.

“It is scary but there are a lot of people who care and a lot of resources available,” Renata Cobbs-Fletcher, president and CEO of Northern Children’s Services, said.

Cobbs-Fletcher says cases like what happened in Upper Darby on Tuesday never have to happen. The case left neighbors stunned.

“I think it’s sad. I think it’s sad that at this day and age, we’re still having children that are having children,” Upper Darby resident Maima Kamara said.

Police Searching For Missing Mother, 3-Week-Old Baby In Dire Need Of Medical Care

The newborn’s 15-year-old mother will now face child endangerment charges. Police said the girl turned herself in Friday afternoon.

She told investigators she gave birth to the child in her bathroom Monday evening, wrapped the baby in a blanked and walked it down the street and placed it on the porch.

Police say the girl’s parents didn’t know she was pregnant.

“You’re speechless. you’re speechless. At first you’re like oh my God, why this baby? What happened to it? I hope that the child is OK, but then you find out it’s of a child — you’re thinking what was in her mind? You want to have compassion for her as well,” Kamara said.

Cobbs-Fletcher says if more people knew about the resources they and other groups offer, cases like these can be prevented.

“We as a community need to do a better job of getting the word out. There’s lots of resources, lots of providers such as Northern Children’s Services that are here to accept young mothers, pregnant or parenting,” Cobbs-Fletcher said.

Cobbs-Fletcher says the Department of Human Services has plenty of programs available for young mothers who think there’s nowhere for them to go.

A five-year-old boy went on a solo bicycle ride around Brooklyn late Saturday night — and his mother was arrested after it took her nearly 20 hours to report him missing, police said Sunday.

Police found the child around 10:30 p.m. near East 55th St. and Linden Blvd. in East Flatbush while he was zipping around on his black and green bike with training wheels.

The kid couldn’t tell police where he lived and didn’t have any contact information for his parents.

Cops released his photo and a picture of his bike Sunday at around 1 p.m. in an attempt to reunite him with his family.

Around 3 p.m., his mom, Nichol Spencer, went to the 67th Precinct to report him missing, police said.

She told cops that she thought the boy was with his dad.

Spencer, 45, was charged with acting in a manner to injure a child. She was waiting arraignment in Brooklyn Criminal Court Sunday night.

The boy was placed in the care of the Administration for Children’s Services and will be assessed before being returned to a family member, police said.

2-Year-Old Found In Vehicle After Police Catch 3 Theft Suspects In Dallas Pursuit
November 27, 2019 at 4:15 pm

DALLAS, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) — A two-year-old was found inside a vehicle after police caught three fleeing theft suspects in Dallas Wednesday.

Around noon Nov. 27, Carrollton police received two theft calls from Melrose Family Fashions and a Dollar General on Josey Lane.

One officer spotted the suspects’ vehicle on Josey Lane and tried to pull it over, but they fled and continued on I-35E into Dallas.

As other officers arrived at the retail locations to take reports, one of the stores reported believing the women had a child with them.

Officers then pulled back on the pursuit just as DPS Helicopter flew in overhead to assist. The helicopter tracked and reported the vehicle was pulled over in the 1600 block of Pine Street in Dallas, where officers arrested Timmiesha Jennings and Destiny Palmer, both 21. The third suspect, 26-year-old Sharnae Harris, ran on foot but was also caught.

After locating the vehicle and suspects, a two-year-old was found safe inside the car. Currently, the department is attempting to find a relative to care for the child, but if not, CPS will take custody.
