MOUNT LAUREL, N.J. (CBS) — A South Jersey man accused of harassing his Black neighbors is behind bars. Hundreds of protesters :afro: gathered outside of 45-year-old Edward Cagney Mathews’ home in Mount Laurel after video of his racist rant against his neighbor went viral on Monday.

Late Monday evening, police took the man into custody.

Protesters were angry that Mathews, seen in videos using racial slurs, was charged with harassment, but then allowed to return home.

New charges have emerged Monday evening as Mathews was taken into custody in dramatic fashion.

According to neighbors, the harassment went even beyond the use of racial slurs. One woman said Mathews kicked down her door and vandalized her vehicle.

It was a dramatic home removal for a man who many claim has been harassing neighbors outside of his Mount Laurel home for years.

Police were called to Mathews’ home Friday shortly after a disturbing video went viral where police say Mathews was “shouting offensive and racial slurs” at a neighbor.

“This is not Africa,” Mathews can be heard saying in the video. He allegedly continued to hurl racial slurs.

On Friday, Mathews was charged with biased intimidation and harassment.

“A judge decided that they should be on a summons so that evening, Mr. Mathews was released,” Mount Laurel Police Chief Steve Riedener said.

Monday afternoon, protestors arrived to his home, demanding police take Mathews into custody.

“This is America, we all live here, we cannot put up with this,” Alyia Robinson said.

Several years ago, Robinson’s daughter, Jazmyn, lived in an apartment below Mathews in a different nearby apartment complex. Once the recent video was shared online, she decided to upload one she had taken back.

“I’m literally in fear all the time living with my son, like what am I supposed to do?” Robinson said.

Another neighbor said that at least 10 others have been continually harassed for the color of their skin.

“He used a BB gun to shoot their windows out, he smeared dog feces all over their car,” one neighbor said.

“I totally understand why the protestors were here today. They had seen videos that weren’t available to us on Friday night that were even worse,” Burlington County prosecutor Scott Coffina said.

Once the new video was reviewed, new charges were added, including assault. The decision was made to arrest Mathews.

The protests that had remained calm all day got heated as police and SWAT units pulled Mathews from his home.

Several bottles were thrown at Mathews’ home and at the police, but many community members urged that action to stop.

Police remain on scene and say two arrests were made as mace was allegedly tossed by a member of the crowd.

The white New Jersey man who was caught on camera hurling racial slurs at his black neighbor will be hit with new charges in connection to the belligerent episode, prosecutors said.

Edward Cagney Mathews, 45, will face charges of bias intimidation and assault after a video of the racial tirade sparked protests over the weekend outside his home in Mount Laurel, Burlington County Prosecutor Scott A. Coffina said.

“I want to especially commend the victim who showed incredible restraint with somebody spewing awful, vile things in his face. Assaulting him,” Coffina said Monday evening at a press conference, NBC Philadelphia reported.

“That’s the subject of the additional charge today. That was on video.”

The Mount Laurel police said Mathews was initially charged with harassment and bias intimidation after a woman told authorities he was continuously harassing her, the Burlington County Times reported.

The latest charges stem from footage of the other confrontation on Friday in which Matthews repeatedly approaches a black man’s doorstep and gets into his face — and at one point, bumps him with his chest.

In the footage of the incident, Mathews can be heard telling the unidentified neighbor to “learn your laws.”

“This is not Africa … or wherever the f—k you were,” Mathews allegedly says to the man.

“I was born in America,” his neighbor responds, “and I don’t give a s–t about you.”

Edwards repeatedly called the man the n-word and a “monkey” during the confrontation :p — and gave out his address to the person filming him and challenged them to visit.

Three days later, demonstrators gathered outside his door for multiple hours, chanting, “We want Edward!,” the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

Other neighbors, including Jazmyn Jene, claimed that Matthews had also subjected them to harassment.

“He made threats, filed false complaints, tried to pin people against me constantly HARASSED ME,” she wrote on Facebook.

“Tried to force me to drop charges, spray painted my car… He KICKED IN MY DOOR with numerous people present.”

He was arrested Monday by officers who escorted him through the crowds as he was pelted with water bottles, the outlets reported.

Matthews has denied that he was a racist and apologized for Friday’s confrontation.

“I certainly wasn’t expecting an encounter like that and certainly wasn’t expecting to disrespect anybody,” Mathews told the Inquirer. “Let me be clear: That is no excuse for what I said, but I lost my temper.”

After what niggers do to we whites, I have no sympathies for niggers at all. This is one isolated incident whereas niggers do this thousands of times to this man's one. Jiggaboos can go weep!

MOUNT LAUREL, N.J. (CBS) — The Mount Laurel man arrested after a neighborhood confrontation over the summer went viral is facing more charges. Prosecutors say Edward Mathews vandalized a neighbor’s car and left a threatening note on it earlier this year.

Mathews was initially charged with harassing his neighbors, bias intimidation, and stalking in July after a video showed him hurling racial slurs at a neighbor.
That video led to a large protest outside Mathews’ house.
“We empathize with the residents of Essex Place who were on the receiving end of Mathews’ conduct,” Burlington County Prosecutor Scott Coffina said. “No one should have to endure racial harassment anywhere, but especially not in their own neighborhood and even in their own home.”
Prosecutors also announced Tuesday that four protesters in that crowd were charged for attacking police and Mathews while he was being arrested. Prosecutorssay the individuals discharged pepper spray, damaged property and spat at police.

The New Jersey man arrested after a viral video showed him berating his neighbor with racial slurs last summer is facing new charges of bias intimidation and harassment.

Edward Cagney Mathews, 45, left a threatening handwritten note on a Mount Laurel neighbor’s car and smeared feces on the vehicle, prosecutors alleged in a press release Tuesday.

Charges were filed after the FBI determined that the message was scrawled in the suspect’s handwriting.
Mathews is now facing a total of 22 charges, including criminal mischief, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, drug possession with intent to distribute, and stalking.

The suspect has been in Burlington County Jail since his July 5 arrest, and a grand jury is weighing an indictment against him.
Mathews, who is white, was confronted by protestors at his home after a video showed him chest-bumping a black neighbor and yelling “learn your laws … this is not Africa … or wherever the f—k you were.”

Four of the protestors were charged Tuesday with pepper-spraying Mathews and responding cops who showed up to arrest him, as well as damaging property and spitting at police, prosecutors said.

“The outrage sparked by Mathews’ conduct on the viral video does not give permission to anyone to commit unprovoked assaults upon police officers or acts of vandalism,” Prosecutor Scott Coffina wrote.

Multiple complaints had been filed with Mount Laurel police about Mathews over the last five years, but he was never arrested until the July viral video, leading some to allege the department was protecting the suspect, officials said.

Prosecutors investigated all of the prior incidents reported against the suspect, and the police response, and found no instances of favoritism, the release said.

However, prosecutors conceded that the department should have looked at the pattern of allegations against Mathews and not treated them on a case-by-case basis.
“We empathize with the residents of Essex Place who were on the receiving end of Mathews’ conduct,” Coffina said. “No one should have to endure racial harassment anywhere, but especially not in their own neighborhood and even in their own home.”
