The companies bankrolling the opposition campaign - including pesticide giants Monsanto ($7.2 million) and Dupont ($4.9 million) - will say and spend anything to prevent the kind of transparency that labeling of genetically modified foods (GMO’s) would provide.


Apparently $34.4 million in pesticide and junk food money can't buy the opponents of Proposition 37 their own set of facts.

Case in point: A new L.A. Times poll shows Prop 37 winning by more than a 2-to-1 margin among registered California voters. And, according to the recent Pepperdine poll, the opposition's support actually dropped four points over the past two weeks.

So while their treasure trove of special interest money can pay for an endless supply of tired, discredited talking points, it can't seem to convince consumers we don't deserve to know what's in the food we eat.

It's not hard to understand why. The companies bankrolling the opposition campaign - including pesticide giants Monsanto ($7.2 million) and Dupont ($4.9 million) - will say and spend anything to prevent the kind of transparency that labeling of genetically modified foods (GMO's) would provide. And without transparency there can be no accountability.

Here ARE a few facts: A growing body of research links GMO foods to potential health risks, increased pesticide use, the emergence of super bugs and super weeds, biodiversity loss, and the unintentional contamination of conventional crops.


What Prop 37 will do is add a line of ink to a label -- as is currently required for 3,000 other ingredients -- so consumers know which products have been altered in a laboratory. That's why the vast majority of Californians support this common-sense measure, and it's why 50 other countries already require that GMOs be labeled.

But that's not all: This summer, Monsanto began selling its first GMO sweet corn product at Walmart. The sweet corn is engineered to withstand the herbicide Roundup and also contains an insecticide (Bt toxin) within the cells of the corn.

Are your children eating Monsanto's latest concoction? You won't know because we don't require labeling. In response to Walmart's decision to undermine the will of its customers , the Yes on 37 campaign released a new ad highlighting the fact that California children are eating unlabeled GMO sweet corn without their parents knowing it.

And now, the recently published (in the highly regarded journal of Food and Chemical Toxicology), first long-term, peer-reviewed animal study involving GMO corn found massive tumors, organ failure and premature death in rats. The findings have prompted the French government to call for an investigation into GMOs, and Russia to suspend imports of GMO corn.

The study was roundly criticized by Monsanto's band of scientists, who were out in force trying to discredit the study design - but what they failed to mention is that Monsanto's own studies that supposedly indicate "safety" are based on the same study design: similar size study, same rats. The only real differences is that the French study was free of industry influence and pressure, was more comprehensive and stringent, and was long-term rather than short.

The most shocking thing of all about the French study is that it is the first long-term feeding study on genetically engineered corn that has been on the American market for more than 15 years. So where's the science? The reason we have been denied such critical information is that biotech companies like Monsanto have controlled and suppressed research.

We need, and deserve, more independent research in this area. In the meantime, we have a right to know and to decide for ourselves whether we want to eat Monsanto's corn. Prop 37 will give us that right.

Monsanto's New Slogan: Our Corn Won't Give You Cancer!​

Keith Kloor, writing at Slate, jumped in to try to stop the tidal wave of negative publicity about Monsanto set off by major study in France by Dr. Gilles-Eric Seralini, proving Monsanto's corn causes cancers and rapid death. But Kloor made things 1000 times worse.

In his article, "GMO Opponents Are the Climate Skeptics of the Left," Kloor goes through all kinds of breathtaking, logic-defying contortions to try to convince the left, somehow, that GMO-opponents aren't . . . themselves.

Doesn't he know the whole left detests Monsanto and what they are doing to corrupt food and democracies around the world, and there is no division about it? While he made a stab at creating a internecine battle between left and left, it was a hopeless (albeit perhaps very well-paid) task.

And the reality is there is not only unity between lefties about Monsanto. The entire left abhors Monsanto. But the right does, too, including climate skeptics. Also the middle detests them. Also, non-political people. Also anarchists. Also militias. Also sewing circles. Even family pets can't stand them. Monsanto has been a gift to everyone in that way, bringing the whole country together as one big ticked off family.

Kloor failed in his impossible effort to divide the undividable. But he came up a winner with his subtitle, which gives Monsanto a fabulous food slogan.

Don’t worry. Genetically modified corn isn’t going to give you cancer.

Kloor may not be very savvy politically but he is a PR whiz. "Monsanto's GM-corn doesn't cause cancer!" is even catchier than "pink slime," which has caught hold like glue with the public.

It's a great slogan and Monsanto could even put the images of the rats in Seralini's study on packages containing their GM-corn and say "See, no cancer!"

Or maybe Monsanto might prefer a more general slogan "Buy our food, it won't kill you!" and apply it to all their products. Then they could use the rats' photos and to proclaim, "See, they're not dead!"

People would be rushing out for Monsanto's GM-corn, GM-soy, GM-canola, GM-sugar, GM-high-fructose-GM-corn-syrup, GM-papaya, GM-crook-neck squash, GM-Nutrasweet, GM-Equal, etc.

In his article, Kloor tore into Professor Seralini, but didn't bother to mention that Professor Seralini had already had to go to court to stop defamation, and he won. That being the case, Kloor might like to go after other scientists who are also saying there are dire consequences to GMOs.

The latest warnings are about GM-wheat which is proving itself as much of a winner as GM-corn. Parents who eat GM-wheat could have children who die from it by the age of five. Perhaps Kloor's slogan for GM wheat could be "GM-wheat doesn't kill your children!"

But that's jumping ahead. One catchy phrase at a time.

Rumor Mill News agent writes ~ I have always wanted to know which foods I have been eating are genetically modified. This article is quite ironic because I just ate a Hostess Cupcake (which I normally never eat) as a lunch treat. It tasted awful!

I remember when I was little how good foods used to taste. Reeses peanut butter cups used to be good too, now they taste like detergent. Fruits and vegatables used to be crisp and juicey, now they’re mushy and dry. Dorito’s used to be a favorite of mine, now they’re disgusting.

I just found this article, and the foods listed shocked me. Cheerios are GM food! This is another list of products everybody should boycott, just like the “Outsourcing,” list I posted last week, thanks to Lou Dobb’s and his fantastic coverage.

GM labeling on all food products is mandatory in Europe, but here in America consumer’s are left in the dark as to exactly what they are eating.

How GMOs Unleashed a Pesticide Gusher​

For years, proponents of genetically modified crops have hailed them as a critical tool for weaning farmers from reliance on toxic pesticides. On its website, the GMO-seed-and-agrichemical giant Monsanto makes the green case for its Roundup Ready crops, engineered to withstand the company's own blockbuster herbicide, Roundup:


Roundup agricultural herbicides and other products are used to sustainably an [sic] effectively control weeds on the farm. Their use on Roundup Ready crops has allowed farmers to conserve fuel, reduce tillage and decrease the overall use of herbicides. [Emphasis added.]

But in a just-released paper published in the peer-reviewed Environmental Sciences Europe, Chuck Benbrook, research professor at Washington State University's Center for Sustaining Agriculture and Natural Resources, shreds that claim. He found that Monsanto's Roundup Ready technology, which dominates corn, soy, and cotton farming, has called forth a veritable monsoon of herbicides, both in terms of higher application rates for Roundup, and, in recent years, growing use of other, more-toxic herbicides.

Benbrook found that overall, GMO technology drove up herbicide use by 527 million pounds, or about 11 percent, between 1996 (when Roundup Ready crops first hit farm fields) and 2011. But it gets worse. For several years, the Roundup Ready trait actually did meet Monsanto's promise of decreasing overall herbicide use—herbicide use dropped by about 2 percent between 1996 and 1999, Benbrook told me in an interview. But then weeds started to develop resistance to Roundup, pushing farmers to apply higher per-acre rates. In 2002, farmers using Roundup Ready soybeans jacked up their Roundup application rates by 21 percent, triggering a 19 million pound overall increase in Roundup use.

Since then, an herbicide gusher has been uncorked. By 2011, farms using Roundup Ready seeds were using 24 percent more herbicide than non-GMO farms planting the same crops, Benbrook told me. What happened? By that time, "in all three crops [corn, soy, and cotton], resistant weeds had fully kicked in," Benbrook said, and farmers were responding both by ramping up use of Roundup and resorting to older, more toxic herbicides like 2,4-D.

Now, biotech industry defenders might counter that the surge in herbicide use is balanced by the other main product offered by the industry: seeds engineered to contain the toxic-to-insects gene found in Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), a naturally occurring bacterial pesticide. The pitch is this: Rather having to spray corn and cotton with insecticides, plant our Bt seeds, and your insect problems are taken care of.

Benbrook found that the Bt trait indeed led to a reduction in insecticide use of 123 million pounds between 1996 and 2011. But that figure is dwarfed by the 527 million pound, GMO-driven increase in herbicide use over the same period. In other words, GMOs have added more than four pounds of herbicides to US farm fields for every pound of insecticide they've taken away. Overall, Benbrook found, GMOs have lead to a net increase in pesticide use (meaning herbicides plus insecticides) of 404 million pounds, a 7 percent gain.

And just as weeds developed resistance to year-after-year applications of Roundup, corn's number-one insect pest, the rootworm, is quickly evolving to be able to withstand Bt-engineered corn, as I've reported before. Benbrook told me that in areas of the Midwest where farmers have been planting Bt corn year after year—an increasingly popular practice, since the explosion in ethanol production that started in 2006—ag university extension experts are suggesting that farmers spray other insecticides to supplement the failing Bt trait in their corn. "The goal of this technology was to make it possible not have to spray these corn insecticides, and now we have to spray them again to bail out this technology," Benbrook told me.

The chemical war against pests will likely get yet another boost from the failure of Roundup. As I've reported before, GMO seed giants Monsanto and Dow are preparing to roll out seeds designed to resist both Roundup and older herbicides including 2,4-D, the less toxic half of the formulation that made up the infamous Vietnam War defoliant Agent Orange. The industry insists that weeds won't develop resistance to the new products. But last year, a group of Penn State weed scientists published a paper warning that the new products are "likely to increase the severity of resistant weeds." Indeed, 2,4-D-resistant weeds have already been documented in Nebraska.

In his paper, Benbrook created a model for how a 2,4-D-resistant corn product, if released in 2013, would affect 2,4-D use. One of the actual benefits of Roundup Ready technology is that it has until recently made 2,4-D almost obsolete—its use on corn crops went from 4.4 million pounds in 1995 to 2.4 million in 2000. It hovered at that level for a while before jumping to 3.3 million pounds in 2010, as farmers increasingly resorted to it to attack Roundup-resistant weeds. If 2,4-D resistant corn is widely adopted, Benbrook projects, making what he calls "conservative" assumptions, 2,4-D use will hit 103.4 million pounds on corn fields per year by 2019. Overall, Benbrook projects a 30-fold increase in 2,4-D applied between 2000 and 2019. Because 2,4-D is so toxic, the result will not be pretty. Here's Benbrook's study:


Such a dramatic increase could pose heightened risk of birth defects and other reproductive problems, more severe impacts on aquatic ecosystems, and more frequent instances of off-target movement and damage to nearby crops and plants.

The only question on GMOs and pesticide use Benbrook's paper leaves open is: When will Monsanto correct the absurd claim on its website that its highly lucrative technology has allowed farmers to cut back on herbicides?

GMO-pushing ‘No on 37′ campaign forced to pull TV ads after caught blatantly lying​

In a bizarre development on the fight for Proposition 37 (the GMO labeling initiative) in California, the “No on 37″ campaign, funded by Monsanto and other agribusiness giants, has been forced to pull one of its own television ads.

The ad featured an opinion from an individual identified on screen as “Dr. Henry I. Miller M.D., Stanford University, founding dir. FDA Office of Technology.”

But the title was a lie! Just like everything else about GMOs, it’s all truly a bunch of lies based on fraud and trickery. As it turns out, Dr. Henry Miller doesn’t work for Stanford University at all. He’s actually a “research fellow” at the Hoover Institution, which just happens to be physically located on the same plot of land as Stanford University.

And by the way, anyone named a “fellow” of any “institution” is often just a globalist eugenicist of some sort. In the case of Henry Miller, he’s predictably a front man for Big Tobacco and has pushed DDT and other toxic substances that threaten life on our planet. (Gee, is anyone surprised?) This guy even said Fukushima radiation might be GOOD for you! (Yeah, eat some GMOs and have a little radiation… what could be wrong with that?)

So according to the “No on 37″ people, merely having an office on the Stanford campus is enough to make you a professor there. Since you’re physically located on campus, you must be a Stanford professor, right?

It’s the same logic with GMOs: They must be safe because we say they are! There’s no need to test anything! Just ignore all those deadly pesticides grown right inside the grains, because those won’t hurt you at all!

Total violation of Stanford University rules

Not only did the No on 37 campaign blatantly lie about Henry Miller’s title, they also blatantly violated Stanford University’s rules against taking sides on ballot measures. Stanford also prohibits any filming on its campus.

You see, the No on 37 campaign, just like Monsanto and the biotech industry, doesn’t care about any rules. They just run around violating everything — including Mother Nature — and they bully their way into the food supply where their products end up being sold by even “natural” grocers such as Whole Foods.

Stacy Malkan, spokesperson for the YES on 37 campaign, responded to all this by saying “The scandal over the Henry Miller ad is proof positive of the lack of credibility and lack of integrity of the No on 37 campaign.”

As YES on 37 now explains:

The ad, now re-edited and back on the air, presents Henry Miller as a scientific expert as he reads from talking points written by the No on 37 campaign, claiming the GMO labeling law makes no sense. Miller is well known to front for industry groups including Big Tobacco and Big Oil. He has argued for the re-introduction of the toxic pesticide DDT, attacked US Food and Drug Administration safety regulators, and claimed low levels of radiation can be beneficial to human health.
