The turning point in the case happened when a police officer who responded to a dispute between Ramirez and his wife at a subway station Friday morning --hours before the hospital attack --later linked him to a description of the rape suspect. Officer George Wolform of the Fifth Precinct in Chinatown called his superiors, who then contacted detectives working on th
rape case.
"Outstanding police officer," Morley said of Wolform. "[He was] home, watching tv, saw the description and immediately called, immediately put the description together. I c
an&

Early Friday morning, Ramirez and his wife returned from a club and, while at the Second Avenue train station on the Lower East Side, began to argue, police said. Ramirez's wife, who police said was acting violently and irrationally, jumped onto the subway tracks.
Police responded and took the woman, who police said is emotionally disturbed, to Bellevue Hospital at about 5:30 a.m. Police did not release her name.
Two hours later, police said, Ramirez walked into the girl's room and, posing as an employee, grabbed a medical chart and called out the name on it. But that patient, who was sharing a room with the victim, had visitors at the time. The suspect then walked over to the victim's bed, inquired about her health, and
asked "her to come with him," a police spokeswoman said Friday.
She resisted, Morley said, but he "dragged" her to an adjacent conference room. It is unclear whether

In the conference room, Ramirez beat, choked a
nd raped the teenager, police said.
Morley said the girl lost consciousness "a couple of times," Morley said.
But police said the victim tried to defend herself and left marks on Ramirez's face.
"She fought back," Morley said. "She said she scratched his face, and he in fact did have scratches on his face."
