Pinellas teacher placed on leave after attack

A Lakewood High School teacher who was assaulted by a student on Friday has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation into the incident.

Robert W. Britt, 35, an English teacher at the St. Petersburg school, received a letter Monday from the Pinellas school district's office of professional standards informing him that he has been suspended with pay effective Nov. 29.

"It's very hard to defend myself," Britt said. "I don't know what my offense is, if anything. I was just trying to give my kids a chance to read
and this happened
."

Britt, an ex-Marine who taught outside Boston for seven years before transferring to
Pinellas in August, left his fifth-period English class about 11 a.m. Friday to investigate noise coming from the classroom next to his. With the teacher's approval, Britt took Tory Walker, 16, into the hallway to reprimand him.

When Walker began arguing with the teacher, Britt started to escort him to the front office. That's when things got out of hand, Britt said.

In a written statement, Britt wrote that Walker "reached down and grabbed what appeared to be a sharp, metallic object and started to pull it out." Britt kicked the object out of Walker's hand and his shoe "brushed against the side" of Walker's head. Another student picked up the object and began running, Britt wrote.

At that point, Britt said, Walker took off his belt and struck him repeatedly in the face and shoulders. Britt fled to a classroom
until the school resource officer arrived.

St. Petersburg police charged Walker with battery on a School Board employee and took him to the juvenile assessment c
enter.

Britt said he had heard nothing from the district until receiving the letter on Monday.

"The letter says allegations were made against me," he said. "The letter does not say what they are."

District officials could not be reached for comment Monday.

Lakewood principal Fred Ulrich said that Walker would "be disciplined to the fullest extent of the code of conduct." Ulrich said the school will review its options, but Walker "will not be attending Lakewood High School any longer."

The principal said he could not comment on Britt's situation.

"The investigation is being completed and a recommendation for any followup will come from the Office of Professional Standards," Ulrich said. "It's been referred to them."

Teacher who was attacked by student placed on leave

An English teacher attacked by a student during school is speaking out after finding out he may face disciplinary action.

The incident happened last Friday at St. Petersburg's Lakewood High and caused the school to be locked down for several hours.

The 16-year-old student was expelled.

The teacher, Rob Britt, still has bruises from the attack.

"It was a violent act," said Britt. "It was scary. If I was a parent of a child at that school, I'd be petrified."

Britt says the incident started when he tried to quiet down the noisy teen, and the student pulled a sharp metal object from his shoe.

"It appeared to be a box cutter out of his shoe," said Britt.

Fearing for hi
s safety, the ex-Marine tried to kick the weapon away and in doing so, "My foot went up and brushed
the side of his face."

Britt says the student then pulled off his belt and started swinging.

"It was a belt buckle, an iron belt buckle, hit me about eight times," said Britt.
The school was locked down for a few hours after the attack.

The student was finally subdued by a school resource officer and remains at the Pinellas County Juvenile Assessment Center. But the student isn't the only one being disciplined.

Britt received a certified letter from the school board telling him he is now on administrative leave and can't have contact with his coworkers.

"I feel like I'm being treated like a criminal," said Britt. "I want to go back to the class. I want to go back and teach my kids, but I do not want to go back to the violence."

The school board says Britt has been placed on leave so St. Pete Polic
e can finish the investigation.

"I was just trying to teach my kids how to read," said Britt. "That's my job. I love it and I will always love it, but I'm afraid now.
"

In accordance with Bay News 9's Crime Guidelines , we are not releasing the name of the student involved in the attack because of his age.

We already know his name is Tory Walker. Can you tell us if he is a nigger or not, or is that prohibited by your Crime Guidelines too?

He doesn't have a choice now.

After fight with teen, teacher fired

LARGO - The Pinellas School Board on Tuesday fired a Lakewood High School teacher who was involved in a fight with a student last month.

Lakewood principal Fred Ulrich asked the School Board to exercise its option to dismiss R
obert Britt
, 35. Because Britt was fired within his 97-day probationary period, the board didn't have to cite a specific reason.

The unanimous decision came with no comment from board members. Britt was not at the meeting.

Ulrich said Tuesday he could not disclose the rea
sons for Britt's firing.

But he said, "I seriously doubt that any member of the instructional unit of Pinellas County schools has ever been dismissed for arbitrary and capricious reasons."

The case has taken on a life of its own as Britt has tried to rally support through e-mails and a Web site.

A former Marine who taught in the Boston area for seven years before transferring to Pinellas in August, Britt has said he left his fifth-period class last month to investigate noise coming from the classroom next door.

With that teacher's approval, Britt took Tory Walker, 16, into the hallway to reprimand him, Britt told the St. Petersburg Times. Walker argued with the teacher
, and Britt tried to escort him to the front office.

In a written statment, Britt said Walker reached for what looked like a "sharp, metallic object."

Britt said he then kicked the object out of Walker's hand and his shoe "brushed against the side" of Walker's hand. Another student picked up the object and ran away, Britt
said.

Walker retaliated, according to Britt, by taking off his belt and striking the teacher in his face and shoulders. Britt said he ran to a classroom until a school resource officer arrived.

Walker was charged with battery on a School Board employee and was taken to the juvenile assessment center.

Britt was placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of an investigation. He received a letter last month informing him that he had been suspended with pay effective Nov. 29.

Times staff writer Thomas C. Tobin contributed to this story.
