An elderly man from Inkster, who has helped raise over 40 children over the years, was beaten to death Wednesday night. The young man believed to be the killer is also allegedly one of the elderly man's grandchildren.

The victim was 75-year-old Al Smith Jr. 31-year-old Lucas Anthony Walters is the man that witnesses say bludgeoned Smith to death

Alberta Williams, one of Al Smith Jr.'s relatives, told Action News, "And he was helping this man raise his kids. That's his grandson that killed him, but he had his kids over there, helping h

im
aise them, too."

The victim and the suspected killer lived together in a littl
e house on Williams street. Another relative, Brenda Walters, watched the fatal beating that occurred just outside the house.

"He just kept beating him with sticks," Brenda Walters explained. "He broke two big old hard sticks on him. Then those bricks back there? He was beating him with them, too."

The suspect's mother told Action News that the events that took place Wednesday night were the result of a long time threat, finally carried out while other family members watched in horror. "My son has been threatening to kill him for the longest time."

Alberta Williams was in shock. "I can't believe he would do this to him! This is crazy. That old man ne
ver did anything to anyone."

Police have gone to the Wayne Co. prosecutor, expecting to have a warrant ready for an arraignment later this afternoon. Although investigators do not k
