LAWRENCEVILLE --Gwinnett's political campaigns took a global turn Thursday night as CNN cameras focused on the United Ebony Society's latest forum.
For 10 candidates in contested primaries for House and Senate seats, the issue on the minds of the moderators was illegal immigration.
Many of the candidates, including Senate District 55 Democrat Abdul Akbar, District 5 Democrat Winston Campbell, District 5 Democrat Craig Newton and House District 95 Republican Robert Mumford, support giving identification ca
ds to illegal immigrants.
House District 96 Republican candidate George Warren said it was his disapproval of that idea that caused him to re-enter politics. The district's incumbent Pedro Marin sponsore

d a bill two years ago to give driver's
licenses to illegal immigrants.
CNN attended the Ebony Society debate as part of a segment on the country's growing diversity, according to former Senate candidate Jimmy Herchek, who produces a newsletter promoting a stricter stance on illegal immigration. He said the crews have been following him for the past several days for a broadcast focusing on Gwinnett's diversity later this year.
