Suspected Scam Artist Surrenders Passport

A Las Vegas man accused of stealing thousands -- perhaps millions of dollars -- in an alleged real estate scam made his first court appearance Friday morning.

Jamal Eljwaidi is charged with felony elder exploitation. He was ordered to surrender his passport even though his attorney, Steven Wolfson, argued that Eljwaidi often conducts business out of the country. Eljwaidi has more court appearances set for next month and prosecutors will ask for his bail to be increased.

"He traveled from another country to Las Vegas, once again, knowing he was going to be arrested and having to post bail. So I don't thin
k it would be reasonable to increase the bail at this point," Wolfson said.

Eljwaidi is accused in at least one case of taking $400,000 a Las Vegas man gave him to invest and spending it on himself. Investigators believe there may be other victims.
