Two teens killed in a horrific crash with a wrong-way, drunk pick-up truck driver on Long Island have been identified as much-loved eighth graders known for their talent on the tennis court.
Drew Hassenbein and Ethan Falkowitz, both 14, were passengers in a 2019 Alfa Romeo when Amandeep Singh, 34, slammed his 2019 Dodge Ram into their ride as he headed south in the northbound lanes on North Broadway in Jericho Wednesday night, authorities said.
A 16- and 17-year-old boy also inside the sedan suffered internal injuries, and were in stable condition at a local hospital, cops said.
After that smash-up, the teens’ vehicle went on to hit a 2023 Volvo, with a 49-year-old woman and 16-year-old boy inside, police said.
Both were treated for minor injuries.
“Probably one of the most catastrophic scenes I’ve seen in a long time,” Nassau Det. Capt. Stephen Fitzpatrick said during a Thursday press conference, according to WABC. “It was almost like the car exploded, that’s how fast the driver hit that car with these kids in it.”

The teens had stopped for a bite to eat after a local tennis event, and were on their way home when the fatal crash unfolded, WABC reported.

Hassenbein and Falkowitz – seated on the right side in the front and back — took the brunt of the crash, according to the outlet.

Both 14-year-olds played on the varsity soccer team at Roslyn High School.

“It is with the heaviest hearts that we share the passing of two of Sportime Roslyn’s most talented players, Ethan Falkowitz and Drew Hassenbein,” Sportime Roslyn, a local tennis club, posted on Facebook. “These were extremely special boys who were best friends and who will be missed greatly by our entire community. Drew and Ethan started playing here at our club as five and six-year-olds, and they had become (as eighth graders!) two of the top players on Roslyn’s High School’s varsity tennis team, the top team on Long Island!”

Tyler Hill Camp, a sleep-away camp in Pennsylvania, shared a tribute to Falkowitz, “a long-time camper” there.

“Everyone who ever came in contact with Ethan knew him as a kid who warmed up every room he entered with his smile and amazing personality,” the tribute said. “He was kind and thoughtful and a camper who was loved by everyone at Tyler Hill. Ethan lit up our tennis courts, our stage and everywhere else in camp he set foot. He was an incredible son, brother, cousin, friend, bunkmate and more.”

Timber Lake Camp in the Catskills remembered Hassenbein fondly.

“Those of us who knew Drew saw in him great promise, not only due to his exceptional talents in tennis, where he was a nationally ranked player, but as a kind, thoughtful and much-admired friend to so many,” the memorial post said. “Simply, Drew was a great kid from a great and loving family whose bright, promising future was cut short by such a senseless tragedy.”

According to the court document, he had glassy, bloodshot eyes, a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, blood on his shirt and a cut on the back of his head.

He admitted to drinking and was found to have a 0.18 percent blood alcohol level, the complaint said.

Driver charged for allegedly blowing through stop sign, mowing down 7-year-old NYC girl — but grieving dad forgives

A woman who allegedly plowed through a stop sign in her car and fatally struck a 7-year-old Queens girl was slapped with criminal charges Tuesday — even as the victim’s devastated dad said he forgives the driver.
Claudia Mendez-Vasquez, 46, was charged with criminally negligent homicide in the Feb. 17 death of little Dolma Nadhuum, who was coming home from a park with her older brother and mother when an SUV crashed into her at the intersection of Newtown Road and 45th Street in Astoria, cops said.
The girl was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital where she died.
The tragedy caught the attention of local officials after Dolma’s 11-year-old brother, Tsering Tashi Takgye, begged the city to put up a traffic light at the intersection in a heartbreaking change.org petition that garnered more than 32,000 signatures.
The city Department of Transportation announced last month that the corner would receive a light following the grief-stricken family’s plea.
While the girl’s father, Tsering Wangu, previously expressed happiness at the light being installed, he told The Post on Tuesday that he had pleaded with authorities not to pursue charges against the driver.
“Whatever the city rules, they have to do that but from my side, I told them to not charge her. I forgive her already,” he said.

“It was involuntary,” Wangu said of the motorist running the stop sign.

“I don’t want to hurt her. If I charge her, I’m hurting her and her family. I don’t want that. Whatever I suffer, it’s for me and my family, and we’ll handle it in any way,” added Wangu, who runs a Buddhist store.

“We don’t let other people suffer,” he added.

The DOT has said the woman ran a stop sign and wasn’t properly licensed – she had a learner’s permit, but did not have a licensed adult in the car like she was supposed to.

She also had a legal amount of alcohol in her system after the crash, the department said.

PHOENIX - Phoenix Police are investigating a hit-and-run crash that left a woman dead early Sunday morning, while investigators say the man responsible is behind bars.

Just after 4 a.m. at 71st Avenue and Thomas Road, officers responded to reports of a serious crash. When they got there, they found a woman lying on the roadway with "obvious signs of trauma" and two cars that had crashed.

23-year-old Rubi Lopez Lopez died at the scene.

It appears Lopez Lopez was the passenger in the car, and the driver is OK.

"The driver of the second vehicle got into another uninvolved car and left the scene. Patrol officers interviewed witnesses and were able to locate the driver, 18-year old Saul Figueroa, who was taken into custody at his home," Phoenix Police said.

It appears to investigators that Lopez Lopez and the driver were crossing 71st Avenue on a green light when Figueroa ran the red light and crashed into them.

Detectives responded to the scene and learned the vehicle Lopez was in was heading eastbound on Thomas Road and crossed 71st Avenue on a green light just before the collision. Figueroa’s vehicle was heading northbound on 71st Avenue and ran the red light before crashing into Lopez’s vehicle.

"Figueroa was believed to be impaired while driving the vehicle," police said. He's booked into jail on suspicion of manslaughter.

The driver accused of killing a 23-year-old pedestrian and mowing down four other people in a wild Manhattan crash admitted he was drinking all day before getting behind the wheel — with a blood alcohol level nearly twice the legal limit, prosecutors alleged Tuesday.
Mahbub Ali, 26, was ordered held on $300,000 bail by a Manhattan judge at his arraignment Tuesday, despite prosecutors requesting he be remanded for the deadly Sunday night driving rampage in Gramercy Park.
Ali, of Queens, allegedly admitted to law enforcement that he began drinking at brunch around noon Sunday — and kept boozing throughout the day before getting into his gray 2021 Hyundai Sonata, Assistant District Attorney Taylor Mauer said in court.
He was speeding up Third Avenue when he jumped a curb and barreled onto the sidewalk at East 21st Street, striking several pedestrians and leaving them tossed down the block, Mauer said.
The 23-year-old victim was crossing Third Avenue in the crosswalk when Ali rammed into him — throwing him into the air, authorities said.

Two pedestrians, a 21-year-old man and 26-year-old woman, and an 18-year-old on an e-bike rider were also injured, as was the passenger in Ali’s car, a 25-year-old woman, prosecutors and police said.

The e-bike rider suffered leg and back pain, and the two pedestrians were left with leg injuries, according to cops.

Police said Ali also struck an unoccupied Chevrolet Express van from behind, while two e-bikes were left crushed by the sedan.

Ali, who appeared to be in tears at the time of his arrest, was arraigned on several charges, including manslaughter, assault, reckless endangerment and operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.

“This was a tragic accident that has impacted the lives of several families,” his defense attorney Steven Epstein told The Post Tuesday. “We are remorseful for the results of the accident but ask that everyone keep in mind not all accidents result in criminal responsibility even tragic ones such as this.”

Drunk driver charged in deaths of NY teens claimed he was millionaire, begged cops not to tell his wife: prosecutors

The accused drunk driver charged in a brutal head-on crash that killed two 14-year-old boys on Long Island claimed he was a millionaire and begged cops not to tell his wife he’d been partying with women, prosecutors said Monday.

Amandeep Singh, 34, even thought he was actually in New Jersey when cops caught up to him after the May 3 wreck that left the Roslyn Middle School eighth-graders dead and two others hurt, prosecutors said following his Nassau County Court arraignment on a 15-count indictment.

“Two 14-year-old boys, Drew Hassenbein and Ethan Falkowitz, lost their lives in an instant because of a drunk driver,” Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly said at a press conference.

“It was a catastrophic crash that miraculously the defendant was able to survive relatively unscathed,” Donnelly said. “But he didn’t stay at the scene to face the accountability for the destruction he had just caused. He fled the scene on foot.”

Donnelly said Singh hid behind a dumpster at a nearby shopping center, where he was busted by cops.

She said Singh, who has a prior drunken-driving arrest as a minor, told police that he was wealthy and begged them not to tell his wife that he had been out partying with women.

Allegedly still in a drunken stupor, he asked, “What are you guys doing here? Aren’t we in New Jersey?”

Cops said they later found a bottle of tequila in his truck.

“Four hours after the crash the defendant’s blood alcohol content was allegedly .15 and also revealed the presence of cocaine,” Donnelly said. The legal limit is less than .08.

She said Singh had been driving at 95 mph against traffic on North Broadway — which has a speed limit of 40 mph — when his 2019 Dodge Ram slammed into the Alfa Romeo that Drew and Ethan were riding in with a 16- and 17-year-old boy.

East Hills Village Trustee Brian Myerson said the families were doing “absolutely terrible.”

“This is just a nightmare that no family should have to go through,” he said.

Singh, who is being held without bail, also had supporters in the courtroom, including his family.

“He’s got a very, very strong support system,” defense attorney James Kousouros said outside the courtroom. “Several relatives, his wife, his father, his aunts, uncles.

“You know he’s a human being who is hurting tremendously right now,” Kousouros said. “[He] understands the pain and anguish that the family is going through. So, he’s in this state of waiting to see what the evidence is, how we are going to proceed. It’s a very difficult time for him and his family.”

Singh is charged with manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter, vehicular homicide, assault, driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident, among other counts.
